Record holders...The town of Wingham has the
distinction of being the home of the athletes who have the Ca-
nadian junor men's and women's pole vault records. Doug
Wood holds the junior men's record of 5.10 metres. He also
has the Canadian men's senior indoor and outdoor records at
5.65 metres. Julie Lisle has the junior women's record of 3.10
metres, Bob Campbell of Wingham was Wood's former high
school coach, and he continues to coach Lisle and other high
school athletes at Madill.

at Ontario meet
Sisters Julie and Mary Lisle of
the Wingham Optimist Track and
Field Club competed in the Onta-
rio Juvenile -Senior track and field
championships held at Centennial
Stadium in Kitchener on the week-
end.
Competing in the 17 -years and
under juvenile division, Mary won
a gold medal in the shot put with a
put of 11.47 metres to edge out an
American rival, Alarm Robinson,
by three centimetres.
In discus she threw 38.16 me-
tres to win another gold, and
leaped 5.10 metres in the long
jump for a fourth place finish.
The next meet for Mary will be
the Canadian Legion champion-
Colts fall to Palmerston in 10 innings
Wingham Colts took on the Pal-
merston Midget Imperials last
Wednesday evening, in Bluewater
Fastbal] League play, and were
handed a 4-3 setback in 10 in-
nings.
Ryan Martin went the distance
on the mound for the Imperials, al-
, lowing four hits and three walks
while striking out 15,
Jason Daw hurled the complete
game for the Colts, giving up eight
hits and two walks and had seven
strike outs.
Third base player Joel Martin
was 2 -for -4 at the plate for Pal-
merston, with centre fielder Aaron
Small getting two hits "in five at -
bats. Catcher Ryan Fisk had one
hit in three` plate appearances.
Catcher Ben Blackwell was 1 -
for -2 at the plate for the Colts.
Second base player Mike MacKay
and third base player Kyle Wheel-
er both had one hit in four at -bats.
Joel Martin drove in two runs in
the top of the eighth inning, with a
double, to give Palmerston a 3-0
lead.
MacKay hit a solo home run in
the bottom of the eighth inning,
and then centre fielder Ryan
Deyell doubled.
The Colts travelled to Belmore
last Monday evening to tangle
with the Stingers.
Jeff Fischer and Chris Eadie
combined for a five -hitter as the
Stingers downed the Colts 8-5.
Fischer lasted three innings before
being relieved by Eadie. They al'-'
lowed five walks and combined
or 17 strike outs.
Bill Haines started for the Colts '
and lasted seven innings before
being relieved by Daw. They gave
up eight hits and five walks and
recorded two strike outs

hit a bases -loaded single in the
second to drive in three runs to
give the Colts a 4-1 advantage.
In the eighth inning, Belinore
third base player Dave Deyell hit a
bases -loaded triple to put the
• Stingers in front 7-5. Second base
player Shane Smith hit a sacrifice
fly to score Deyell and reach the
final 8-5 score.

Belgrave Bantams lose to Wroxeter
The Belgrave Bantams took on
Wroxeter last Wednesday evening
and were handed a 14-11 setback.
Scoring for Belgrave in the first
inning were Jami McCallum and
Dean Walker .
Mike Sanders, Rob McGee,
McCallum and Adam Garniss
crossed the plate in the second in-
ning
Rob Burkholder, Mike Barfoot,
McGee and Jeremy Campbell
scored in the third inning. McCal-
lum crossed the plate in the fourth
inning with Belgrave's final run.
Wroxeter scored four times in
the first inning, added two in the
second, single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings, and scored six
times in the sixth inning to pull
out the win.
.Belgrave scored a 12-11 deci-
sion over Varna in the first game
of their best two of three WOAA
series. The game was played in
Belgrave last Sunday.
Walker and Luke Lockridge
crossed the plate for Belgrave in
the first ihiting. McCallum and
Walker scored in the third and
McCallum, Garniss and Walker
with %home run.scored in the fifth
inning. Crossing the plate in the
sixth inning were McCallum, Gar-
niss, Walker with another home
run, Campbell, and Sanders.
Varna scored single runs in the
first, second, third, and, fourth in-
nings, two in the fifth, and added
five more runs in the sixth inning.
McCallum and Campbell shared
pitching duties for Belgrave. Gar-
niss handled the catching.

Competing ih the open -aged
senior division, Julie won four
medals. She out -distanced the
field of competitors in shot put as
she put 12.25 metres to win the
gold.
In pole vault, she cleared the
bar at 2.85 metres to win another
gold. She won the silver medal in
the hurdles and had her best throw
of the season in the discus, 40.68
metres to earn the bronze.
Julie's next meet is Aug. 18-19
when she joins the Canadian team
in the U.S. versus Canada com-
bined events championship in
Windsor, Ontario.
LEGION EUCHRE
Sixteen tables of euchre were in
play last Monday evening at the
Wingham Legion Hall.
Helen Martin and Janet Mathers
tied for top spot as high lady with
Mrs. Martin the eventual winner.
Shirley Hackett was second high.
Bob Grasby was high man and
Verna Currie (playing as a man)
was second high. Six ladies tied for
most lone hands with Irene Smyth
being the eventual winner.
Draw prizes went to Kay Rich,
Catherine Wilson, Oscar Schefter
and Edythe Coultes. The next Le-
gion card party, a shoot, will be
held on Monday, Aug. 14.

Committee
hires project
co-ordinator
BLYTH — The Huron -Perth Injury
Prevention Committee has ah -
flounced the hiring of Brenda Edgar
as project co-ordinator for the first
phase of "Living Safely: Creating
an Injury Prevention Action Plan
for Huron and Perth Counties".
The Huron -Perth Injury Preven-
tion Committee is a group of inter-
ested service providers who first
met in fall 1994 following an Injury
Prevention Workshop held in the
spring of 1994. This group applied
for and received a Community Inju-
ry Prevention grant from the Onta-
rio Ministry of Health. The goals of
the program are threefold:
'develop an injury prevention ac-
tion program for Huron and Perth'
counties to address the following
issues:
motor vehicle occupant injury in
the 16-24 age group;
-motor vehicle occupant injury for
all age groups;
-cyclist injury in the 5-15 age group
-unintentional falls in the elderly;
-farm injuries. f'
'develop a network of interested in-
dividuals, groups agencies and or-
ganizations into a working group.
'ensure co-ordination and advocacy
for programs addressing drinking
and •driving'in young adults.
