at Dunkirk. A few weeks later, he
joined the Royal Navy, and at 19
went ashore at Varengeville-sur-
Mer, just up the beach from Dieppe
during the historic raid, as a naval
commando and demolition special-
ist. Wounded in the ensuing battle,
he survived by applying a dressing
to his injured eye and swimming
out toward the waiting ships until
he was picked up by the HMS
Calpe.
The Dieppe book took about
three years to research and write.
His second book, The Company
Store, is an account of the poor liv-
ing and working conditions faced
by Cape Breton miners up to 25
years ago.
His latest book is Music in the
Park.
A Kitchener resident for the past
20 years, Mr. Mellor distinguished
himself in a number of fields,
including engineering and teach-
ing, before becoming an author.

Hydro rates jump
by 6.5 per cent
Ontario Hydro's service rates to
municipal utilities will go up by 6.9
per cent, Wingham Public Utilities
Commission has been told.
The increase is a considerable
jump over last year's rate hike of
just over five per cent, says PUC
Manager Ken Saxton. The increase
will not affect PUC customers until
Wingham sets its new hydro rates
for 1990 next month, Mr. Saxton
explained.
