A few weeks later, he joined the Royal Navy, and at 19 went ashore at Varengeville-sur- Mer, just up the beach from Dieppe during the historic raid, as a naval commando and demolition special- ist. Wounded in the ensuing battle, he survived by applying a dressing to his injured eye and swimming out toward the waiting ships until he was picked up by the HMS Calpe. The Dieppe book took about three years to research and write. His second book, The Company Store, is an account of the poor liv- ing and working conditions faced by Cape Breton miners up to 25 years ago. His latest book is Music in the Park.
