Kids' programs are priority
for new branch supervisor
Beefing up Wingham Public Li-
brary's children's programs is a pri-
ority for Paula Mackie, Wingham's
new librarian.
Mrs. Mackie, who came to Wing -
ham last week, studied Early Child-
hood Education at Fanshawe Coh
lege and worked in a day care cen-
tre before switching to library work
a few years ago in Kitchener. She
worked on children's programs at
Kitchener Public Library before tak-
ing a position as staff librarian here
in Wingham.
"I hope to offer a pre-school pro-
gram twice weekly, starting in
September," she says. The program
is to run in two seven -week series
in the fall and winter, and will
Include crafts, songs and films for
the children.
For the younger ones, a Mothers
and Tots program for two -year-olds
will also be started this year, Paula
hopes.
A new Book Club session also
begins this September.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen of Gorrie and Mr. and Mrs. William
Henderson Jr. of Wingham, are pleas o announce the engage-
ment of their children, Scott Patrick and Catherine Evangeline. The
wedding will take place in Wingham, Septernber 16, 1989.

Don McLean, son of Edna and
the late Jack McLean, graduated
from Humber College of Applied
Arts and Technology in Toronto on
June 14. Don received his diploma
as a chemical lab technician. Don
would like to further his education
in the fall at the University of West-
ern Ontario, but is presently
employed at T.B.S. in Grand Bend.

Mrs. Howard Zettler, Sherry,
Amanda and Alicia of RR 4, Walk-
erton, visited with Mrs. Elizabeth
Procter recently. Other visitors at
the same home during this past
week were Mr. and Mrs. Philip

Mr. and Mrs. Garner Nicholson
were visitors with Mr. and Mrs.
Rob Nicholson of Listowel. They
also visited with Jack Wickstead at
Kilberg Place, Listowel.
A campout was held at Jeremy
Campbell's home on Aug. 17 and
18 for some of the Mite ball players.
The players include Adam Garniss,
Jamie McCallum, Michael Marks,
David Piluke, Tim Embling, Jason
Curtis, Kevin Campbell and Jeremy
Campbell. His brother, Justin, also
participated. The children had ball
practice to get ready for their tour-
nament on Saturday. They also
swam in the Wingham pool and fol-
lowed that with a barbecue. After
practising again on Friday morn-
ing, the children returned home. A
good time was enjoyed by all.
McBurney clan
holds reunion
BELGRAVE—The McBurney
reunion was held Sunday, Aug. 20,
in the Belgrave WI Hall with 57
attending.
and,. Mrs. Bob Shiell of
Oakville were president and secre-
tary, with Wilfred Shiell in charge of
games for the 19 children present.
Next year's reunion will also be
held in the Belgrave hall, with
Elmer Shiell president, Mrs. Ross
Smith secretary and Miss Gwen
McBurney and Mrs. Neal Hardie
conducting the sports.
Mrs. May McBurney, 89, was the
oldest person present and little
Meghan Daly Shiell, three weeks
old, was the youngest. Both are
from London.

Mrs. Howard Wylie, accompa-
nied by Jim and Fern Wylie, attend-
ed the funeral of their cousin, Miss
Ethyl Saph, 81, in Niagara Falls,
New York, on Aug. 20 and 21. She
passed away suddenly on Friday,
the 18th, after just returning home
front an enjoyable two-week vaca-
tion at the Wylie cottage at Amber -
ley. The sympathy of the communi-
ty is extended to the family.
Mr. and Mrs. Les Douglas accom-
panied Alex and Anne Stewart of
Trenton to Crooked Lake, near Sud-
bury, to spent the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. Grant Palmer.
Supper guests with Mrs. Allan
Griffith Thursday evening were
Mrs. Margaret Deaken and Roy
Whitehead of Walkerton and Mrs.
Eileen Marks.
Mrs. Bonnie MacDougall,
Burlington, spent a few days with
Gordon Gibson. Mrs. Cecil Cooper,
Barrie, also called at the same home
one day.
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Higgins
spent a few days last week visiting
friends and sightseeing on St.
Joseph's Island. The weather was
ideal and they report the island, as
large as Huron County, offers much
to see in historical and present lore,
which made for a pleasurable holi-
day.
Mrs. Mac Allan spent last week
in Bala, visiting with Florida
friends.
Joe Simmons is having a garage
erected on his property in the vil-
lage, where Dalton Dickisons live.
It is progressing quickly.
Infant baptized
at Knox Church
BELGRAVE—Baptismal service
was held at Knox Presbyterian
Church on Sunday, Aug. 20. Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Bennett of Lucan pre-
sented their infant son, Blair Dun-
can William, for baptism.
Rev. Carolyn MacAvoy, minister
of the church, conducted the ser-
vice. Mrs. Mike Siertsema sang two
solos, "Sweet Stories of Old" and
"Thus Saith the Name of the Lord",
accompanied by the church organ-
ist, Mrs. Hazel Dalrymple of Blyth.
Visitors for the service and at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Hebo Siertse-
ma, RR 3, Blyth, were from Win-
nipeg; Southfield, Michigan;
Goderich and Blyth area.
