Lisle also won gold and silver medals. (Track Club Photo) timist athletes w 11 -Ontario goldm Seven Wingham Optimist ath- letes made a strong showing -in Oshawa last weekend during the provincial Mite, Tyke, and Atom track and field championships. The team came home with six gold, five silver a-nd one bronze medal, as well as fourth and fifth place ribbons. Ginny Schenk and Janet Lisle were stars of the Mite Girls' divi- sion. Ginny ran the 100 metres in 1736 seconds and the 200 m in 36.9 seconds, earning a gold and silver medal respectively. Janet ran the 200 m in 36.81 seconds and 100 m in 17.21 seconds, also earning a gold and a silver. She also earned a silver in the long jump with a leap of 3.15 m. Patrick Nolan ran in fine form, earning 5th for Mite Boys in the 400 m with a time of 1:29.5 min, a per- sonal best. In Tyke Girls, Mary Lisle struck gold in.the shot put with a throw of 5.88 m. Lisle placed 4th in long jump with 3.53 m and 7th in the 100 m with a time of 16.67 seconds. Michael Nolan earned a silver for Tyke Boys in shot put with a throw of 6.06 m. During a downpour, Nolan managed tarn another sil- ver medal in the high jump. Devin Chaulk ran to fifth place in the 400 m with 1:15.4 minutes. Lisle also struck gold in the discus throw with a personal n best toss of 24.85 m, just tossing. Ontario record. Her long tamp of 4.45 m also earned Julie another gold. Her relay performance netted her a bronze. BRONZE -MEDAL PERFORMANCE -Shawn Gedcke of the Wingham Optimist Track and Field Club won the bronze medal in the Bantam boys' 400 -metre race at the recent Saugeen Elementary Classic at Port Elgin. (Track Club Photo) Optirnist athletes score at Saugeen Classic meet Twenty-nine local athletes, were among more than 500 from Western Ontario who competed recently in the Saugeen Elementary Classic track meet in Port Elgin. Despite the cold, windy weather, Optimist athletes earned 62 gold, silver and bronze awards. At this meet, athletes attempt to achieve certain set standards of per- formance to earn awards. The team set 33 personal best (P.B.) results. Julie Lisle set two new meet records with a long jump of 4.14 metres in the Atom Girls long jump, and a throw of 8.94 metres in shot put to shatter the old record by over a metre.
