The suggestion to hire a deputy chief was quickly dismissed by board members at the June meet- ing. A letter from the fire chiet was read at last week's meeting. In the letter, Chief Gaunt informed the board that, as of the end of this month, he is the only officer in the Wingham station available to answer calls during the daytime hours. Mr. Caere- with his award at a Lions Club meeting.. David Wenger of Wenger Publications was on hand for the presentation, as was Advance - Times editor Margaret Stapleton. Mr. Casemore is the second recip- ient of The Advance -Times Citizen of the Year Award, said Mr. Wenger, and was chosen by a selection com- mittee of community members ear- lier this spring. Mr. Wenger said "Casey" has long been a friend of The Advance - Times, supplying news, pho- tographs and insights of his many trips to Europe. Mr. Casemore also is a friend of the community, added Mr. Wenger. He is heavily involved with the Lions Club, the Legion, the curling club, the hospital auxiliary and the Wingham United Church, just to name a few. Mr. Casemore has had his share of problems in the past several years, including‘ two boutshn cancer, the most recent being this spring. However, he bears his own troubles in silence and is always there to help a sick or needy friend, noted Mr. Wenger. Finally, "Casey" is a friend to the world. As Wingham's "good -will ambassador", he has made friends virtually everywhere he goes whether aboard the Concorde or in the streets of Rome, people remem- ber him. At the conclusion of Mr. Wenger's remarks, he presented Mr. Casemore with an commemora- tive clock, complete with inscribed plaque, as a keepsake. "Casey" thanked the newspaper and the selection committee for the honor.
