Not such a surprise
A report last week out of Kitchener indicated thatcivic and law
enforcement officials are surprised to discover that the deadly
street ,drug "crack" is now being sold on the streets of that city.
Crack, a relatively .inexpensive cocaine derivative has grown
steadily in popularity among those seeking the artificial "high" and
feeling of well-being offered by the drug in the early stages of its
use. Later, of course, the user turns more. and more to the drug
simply as a means Of ,survival while clinging, desperately to the roller
coaster ride of addiction.
That the drug should turn 'up of Kitchener streets should :cue&
no shock. That it took so long to surface' is more cause for surprise.
Often, for a number of reasons, communities turn a blind eye' on
such distasteful happenings, content to look at -other larger Cen-
tres where the illegal trafficking in drugs is 'widely reported.
Through our blinkers we can understand why these things could
happen in such places as Toronto and Montreal, but never in the
smaller cities such as the one in which we live.
It is this type of thinking which unintentionally allows the illegal
activity a foothold in the first place. When we at last wake up to the
reality that drugs are being sold in our neighborhood, unfortunate-
ly, it's already too late.
To carry that a step further, if the drug has found its way to the
streets
of
Kitchener r
and
London,
Hien eni-
it's not unreasonable to sug-
gest it's an almost even -money bet that crack can be available right
here, somewhere . in Huron County.
Currently, police chiefs in this area are investigating the possibil-
ity of organizing a co-operative special drug unit among their de-
partments. PmentsSome would do

Timely gold
Kurt Browning's gold medal win at the world figure skating cham-
pionships in Paris last Thursday couldn't have come ata better time
for Canadians.
With our national. sporting spirit flagging steadily with each day's
account of the now- seemingly endless Dubin inquiry,. the young_
man from Alberta turned in a spectacular performance tokate his
way to the top of the world figure skating podium to hear the Cana-
dian national anthem played as he was crowned men's world figu e,
skating champion. „ Y
Browning gave it all he had during his performance Thursday
night, turning his dazzling: leaps end -combination jumps into a bras
,challenge for his competitors.as.if to say, "take it from me". Noone
came close, of course
And despite his modest claims to the contrary, a has helped us
all to erase the bad taste of the scandal of Se I nd the subse-
quent Dubin inquiry. Browning says he doesn't tri k the pride of
Canadians had been hurt all that much, but acknowledges his
medal win might be uplifting to a national pride that had been dealt
"a couple of blows."
Maybe, he says, it will give Canadians the opportunity to cheer
again. It has, Kurt, it has, and it couldn't have been more timely.
Canadians now have a new world champion to look up to.
