ENGLISH AS SHE IS SPUR
The Weekly editors from Canada
had something to learn of the Eng-
lish language when they visited the
motherland. :It is not wise to ask.
for a drug store if you are taken
sick in England or you are suspect-
ed of being a "dope fiend." A drug
store is a "chemist's shop." A store
isn't h store, it's a "warehouse."
"Dry goods" are not sold in "dry
goods stores," they are "drapery"
or "mercery.' Candy isn't candy it's
"sweets" or "lollies;" peanuts are
"monkey nuts." A monkey wrench
is a "spanner. Suspenders are "br-
aces;" wood alcohol' is "methylated
spirits;" cotton is "thread,' not raw.
cotton. An elevator is a "lift," and
a street car a "tram;" dome faster-
ers are "pressed, studs;" gasoline is
"petrol;. a sight /seeing automobile
is a "charabanc."
When an English business man
telephones he doesn't say "Hello."
He says.. "are you there?" He uses
cheques' not checks. He calls a chif-
fonier a "chest of drawers." A
dresser is not a dresser but a piece
of furniture on which to put"china'
and "plate" after it has been 'wash-
ed up' in. the kitchen. If he sells
spinach he is a "green grocer; if he
deals in chicken he is a "poulterer"
He does not ask you "are you
though" but ''have you finished."
The penny in the slot weigh scales,
do not tell you how you many pou-
nds you weigh but how many' "sto-
nes" yaii weigh.
