The Wingham. Area Fire Board has decided to follow the recom- mendations of its ad hoc committee and will hire a full-time chief for the department which serves the Town of Wingham, and Howick, Tur- nberry, Morris and East Wawanosh Townships. At a special meeting last Wed- nesday, the board made its decision to go along with the committee's recommendations, even though the Town of Wingham had requested the board not take action until after a report from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been released. Wingham's request was presented to the board by its representatives Ron Beecroft and Dr. James McGregor. Mr. •Beecroft, the board's vice-chairman, presided at the meeting in the absence of Chairman John Jacques who was ill. According to Mr. Beecroft, the Fire Marshal's report could be presented to a general meeting orall councils at the fire hall on June L Both he and Dr. McGregor repeated the town's request and asked the board to delay any action until after that meeting is held. Although his municipality held no formal meeting, East Wawanosh Township representative Fred Meier said a poll of council members showed all were in favor of the report's recommendations. Howick Township also accepted the committee's report and agreed with hiring a full-time chief, representative Norman Fairles reported. •Dr. McGregor said he was "taken aback" when he discovered the board had released to councils only one of two reports prepared by members of the ad hoc committee. He suggested that the second, "minority" report should also be circulated. - "You can't always expect a -n examining group to come down with a unanimous report," he said. Fire Marshal's office has been 4 v • • released. Indications point to an early June release of that report at a general meeting to be attended by all councils and the fire board. As it turned out, however, Wingham's request fell on deaf ears as the board went ahead two days later and approved the ad hoc committee report, including the hiring of a full-time chief. Town council based its request on information included in another document, said to be a minority report written by one or two members of the ad hoc committee. Generally, council was of the opinion that by requesting approval of the ad hoc committee's report, the fire board was forcing the town to decide without having all the in- formation.
