WILD TURKEY SHOT—Kevin Townsend of Wroxeter has done it
again — for the second year in a row he shot the first wild turkey in a
controlled hunt near Napanee. The giant gobbler weighed in at 21
and one-quarter pounds.
Man bags first wild turkey
for set,ond consecutive year
He's done it again! Kevin
Townsend of Wroxeter has shot the
first wild turkey in a controlled hunt
for the second year in a row.
An elated Mr. Townsend brought
home his 211/4 pound prize from
Napanee last Monday, May 2. Al-
though the hunt started at 6a.m. and
only moments later he had filled his
quota, Mr. Townsend was walking
on air.
Bagging a wild turkey can be most
difficult. Despite of an undistin-
guished appearance, these birds are
very canny. Hunters must attend a
seminar and write an examination
in order to be licensed.
Mr. Townsend says a turkey's
eyesight is 10 times better than a
human and its sense of hearing sev-
eral times more acute. It is for those
reasons that hunters must be fully
camouflaged — including their, gun
barrels — and be perfectly still.
Introduced to the Napanee district
several years ago after nearly
reaching the point of extinction, it
has been estimated that 6,000 wild
turkeys now roam the area. Last
year, Mr. Townsend says, only 10
per cent, or 600 birds, were shot in
the first controlled hunt.
Only tom turkeys may be shot as
they service numerous females.
Some careful preparation goes
into bagging a wild turkey. At dawn,
the hunters enter the bush, sit down
behind a tree and start to snake calls
to lure the male bird down to a
waiting female.
Mr. Townsend uses a box call and
a mouth diaphrar to simulate the
call of a female turkey. It sounds ex-
ceptionally realistic and he even
won a turkey .ca'lling contest at a
sportsmen's show.
As this is their mating season, the
tom turkey becomes excited at the
sound of the female and goes into full
strut, looking for a hen. In his en-
thusiasm he marches right into the
path of the waiting hunter and is
shot.
Mr. Townsend estimates the bird
he shot is two years old. He is going
to attempt to mount the fanning tail
feathers and may even keep its
peculiar -looking beard, a long string
of course hair that grows under the.
chin area.
Asked how a wild turkey tastes,
Mr. Townsend's wife Marg said the
bird they cooked last year was
delicious, perhaps even juicier than
a domestic turkey. However, they
may make stew of the legs as they
area bit tough.

ur objective is realized because . .
Every successful community
project is the result of the spirit
of civic duty from those volun-
teers who give freely of their
time to share in all the work
that has to be done. The suc-
cessful realization of our new
library facility is due in part to
those people.
We would like to publicly rec-
ognize the following for their
help, particularly through the
last year of effort and fund
raising, in making a commu-
nity dream come true. We
wish to share with them our
sense of achievement and
gratitude.
