You may be old enough to
remember the. days when
kerosene lamps were com-
mon. Today, thePre the ex-
ception rather that the rule.
But there's a collection of
over 1000 of them on display
at 'Black Creek PioneeraVil-
' lage that can only be de-
scribed as magnificent!
The Pioneer village, near
the corner of Jane and
Steeles in Toronto, is an
appropriate setting for the
showing which was opened
early this. May by actor Ken
Kercheval, noted American
glass collector.
The. name likely means no-
thing to you unless you're a
theatre goer or a collector.
But here's something else
about him that will ring a
bell. He's Cliff Barnes on
TV's Dallas!, Cliff is a power
hungry oilman, but a born
loser who's lways being
outsmarted by he universal- ,
ly despised "J.R.".
I had arrived at Black
Creek about 10 a.m. to get a
preview of the disillay. Cam-
eraman Frank Mahon,
Jenny and myself had the
gallery to ourselves. We
were all not merely impress-
ed. We were astounded at the
beauty of the lamps.
No two lamps were alike.
There were hanging lamps,
bracket lamps, street lamps,
parlour lamps. The glass-
work in them was in credibly
beautiful, and the colors
were of all shades and hues.
F'rank couldn't wait to
start shooting pictures. He
was hauling out lighting
equipment and muttering to
himself that he'd never seen
anything quite like it.
Suddenly, Catherine Thuro
and Ken Kercheval appear-
ed. Mrs. Thuro, and her hus-
band Carl, put the collection
together over a fifteen year
period. They travelled thou-
sands of miles, spent untold

Mrs. Thuro and Cliff Barnes
— 1 mean, Ken — wanted to
hear all about it. Then the
three off them wandered off
to look at more lamps.
Frank was still shooting
pictures like mad. I was con-
cerned about setting up an
interview, but Frank was
living in a world of his own.
I moseyed around, rumin-
ating about the absorption of
collectors in general. 1 .con-
-cluded that for some of them
it was more than a hobby, it
was a way of life. Even for
materialistic oilmen from
Dallas — power brokers like
