Former Walton lady
honorecton birthday .
Mrs. Edna McDonald of
Huronview at Clinton was
honored June 2 at the Walton
United Church on the oc
casion of her 85th birthday.
Mrs. McDonald is a former
resident of -Walton and a
church member. Her actual
birthday was June 4.
The birthday celebration
was arranged by Mrs.
McDonald's immediate
family: Mary and Murray
Huether, Brussels; Ken and
Leona McDonald,,tWalton
and Don and Marilyn
McDonald, also of Walton.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Elgie of
Wroxeter had charge of the
morning servicg in the ab-
sence of the minister, Rev.
C. Swan. The Elgies each
gave inspiring messages
honoring Mrs. McDonald.
Don McDonald spoke a. few
words on behalf ofthe family
and sang "Did You Stop to
Pray Today?", accompanied.
by Mrs. Margery Huether.
During the offering, Mr.
Elgie played a piano solo,
which was greatly enjoyed.
Immediately after the
service Mrs. McDonald and
,her family went to the
church basement where she
was greeted by many friends '
and relatives.
Unit Two of the Walton
UCW served a delicious meal
to 64 relatives, complete with
birthday cake. In attendance
were 13 of Mrs. McDonald's
grandchildren, however Neil
McDonald of Vancouver and
Mrs. Karen Warwick and her
children Michael and
Kendra of Olds; Alberta,
were not to attend. They

congratulations earlier in
the day.
A total sof 15 great-grand-
children, as well as Many
nieces, nephews and first
cousins were in attendance.
Mrs. Alvin McDonald
offered grace and two grand-
children, Bruce McDonald of
Belmore and David Huether
of Brampton, spoke briefly
on behalf of their families.
Everyone present offered
congratulations to Mrs.
McDonald and best wishes
for the future.
During the day and prior to
her birthday, Mrs: McDon-
ald had received many hand-
shakes., cards, gifts and- ood
wishes. The staff of Huron -
view also ' sent birthday ..

Guests were present from
Mississauga, Burlington,
London, Sciorough, Listo-
wel, Sarnia, Belmore, God-
erich, Huron Park, Hamilton
and the surrounding area.
Incidentally, Mrs. McDon-
ald celebrated her birthday
along; withher great-grand-
child, Sarah Tipple. It was a
very happy occasion for the
child as well.
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Scott
have just returned from a
three-week vacation to
Saskatchewan and Manitoba
where they visited with
relatives in Coronach and
Simmie, Saskatchewan;
Carberry and Portage la
Prairie, Manitoba.
Hugh Clark of Uxbridge,
nephew of Mrs. I. W.
Merrick, sustained damage
to his barn in the amount of
approximately $12;000 in last
week's tornado. Several
trees in that area were
uprooted as well.
The P.H.A.M. gathered at
the home of Mrs. George
Galbraith of Turnberry
Estates, Wingham, on
Monday or their annual
eunion and to celebrate
their 44th ear. Guests were

A SEAT OUT OF HISTORY—Tom Wharton of Wingham holds up a cast iron imple-
ment seat he found at a garage sale. The seat is embossed with the words "RobinO on
& Co., Manufacturers, Wingham, Ont.": After some research using the late John Pat-
tison's book about Wingham, Mr. Wharton discovered the seat was made at the old
iron foundry on Victoria Street sometime around the year 1872. He found the seat at
Murray Pepper's garage sale. He reported that Mr. Pepper had found it lying around
on the farm in Morris Township. .
Local service celebrates
)60th anniversary of church
A special service of
worship to commemorate
the 60th anniversary of The
United Church of Canada
(formed June 10, 1925) was
held at the Wingham United
Church Sunday. For the
occasion the Youth Group
had prepared three large
banners which now adorn the _

The junior choir, led by
Mrs. John Scheller and
accompanied by Mrs. Syd
Thompson, sang "It's A
Small World" and "Where
the Savior Leads". The
senior choir, under the
direction of organist Hap
Swatridge, sang "Renew
Thy Church, Her Ministries
Restore". Patty. Walker
gave the last in a series of six
weekly inserts entitled
"Sixty Seconds for, Sixty ,
Years", highlighting the
"work and witness of Dr. J. R.
Mutchmor, a former leader
of the church.
The minister, Rev. J. Rea
Grant, spoke ,briefly on the
-theme,-"What's-- Right --With -__.._
The United Church?",
drawing attention to the fact
that the mat the centre of the
church crest stands for the
first letter of the name for
Christ Greek, and in-
dicating that from . the
beginning, the denomination
has endeavored to_m.ak.e.
Christ central to its ,life.
A number of people were
also welcomed into mem-
bership. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan
Metcalfe, Mr. and Mrs.
Jamie Stapleton and Roger
Plumb were received by
confirmation; Mr. and Mrs.
Sam Thompson, Mr., and
Mrs. Edward Walker and
Mrs: Nelson Underwood by
certificate transfer. The
service concluded with the
Sacrament of Holy Com-
munion at which Mrs. Jack
Reavie and Dr. Ray
Bateman assisted the
minister and other elders.
Following worship, many,
attended a- luncheon in the
Sunday School room which
featured a large decorated
birthday cake in recognition
of the 60th anniversary.
After lunch a humorous
dialogue was presented,
highlighting some of the
features and events of the
church's history. Taking
part were Mrs. Art Laidlaw
and Barry Simpson who
acted as asides tying the
dialogue . together, and Art
Laidlaw,'Dr. Bateman, Mrs.
Rea Grant and Jack Kopas
who took various roles.
The program concluded
with a specially prepared
filmstrip entitled... "Living
and Risking", which
reviewed many facets of the
church's six decades of
service. _.�

Heidi Lorch, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Karl Lorch of
RR 1, Formosa, graduated
May 17, 1985, from the
Ridgetown College of
Agricultural Technology
with a diploma in agri-
cultural production and
management. She is em,
ployed in the family business
of farming.

Joan Vincent of RR 3,
Wingham, received her
Bachelor of Agricultural
Science degree with a'major
in animal and poultry
science and a minor in ex-
tension education during
convocation at the
University of Guelph. She
also received the Roy Jewell
Award for agricultural
communications. Attending
the ceremony were her
husband, Neil Vincent; Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Osborne,
Joyce, Sheila and Kevin, and
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vin-
cent. A gradua .ion dinner
followed.
'Hope Is Life'
is theme of
U.C. service
BRUSSELS — Rev.
Charles Carpentier off the
United Church used "Hope Is
Life" as the theme of his
Sunday sermon.
The choir sang two hymns
and as the Sacrament of
Holy Communion was held,
the Communion Hymn was
sung. The offering was taken
at the door after theservice
by the ushers. There also
was a pot -luck supper and
concert at night to com-
memorate the chum's 60th
anniversary.

plant flowers
GORRIE — The ladies of
Knox Presbyterian Church
met last Wednesday evening
at the church to plant annual
flowers. The members then
held their monthly meeting
in the church with Mrs.
James Robinson presiding.
The roll call was answered
with a verse or prayer about
planting. Mrs. William
Smith gave a brief report on
the presbyterial held
recently in Lucknow.
Mrs. Isabel Adams read
"The Prayer of a Teacher".
Mrs. Smith presented the
topic on Christian education.
Using the story of the feeding
of the 5,000 as recorded in the
sixth chapter of the Book of
Mark, she showed how Jesus
met the .spiritual and
physical -needs of the throng
and welcomed little children
to his company.
Mrs. Robinson played two
accordion selections, "Just a
Closer Walk with Thep" and
"Amazing Grace".
The weekly exercises were
discussed and Mrs. Smith
closed with a prayer. Mrs.
Robinson and Mrs. . Dave
Lockie hosted the fellowship
hour in the choir room.
The next meeting will take
the form of a picnic in the,
Gorrie Park on July 14 to
which all congregation
members are invited.

graduated May 27 from
Wilfrid Laurier University
with an Honors Bachelor .of
Arts degree in sociology and
psychology. A family dinner
was held in Waterloo. Wendy
will attend teachers' college
in September. at Queen's
University, Kingston.
Brenda and, Barbara wish to, invite friends,
relatives and neighbors to a dance in honor of their
parents' (Jack and Betty Glousher) 35th 'wedding
anniversary. It will be held at Blyth Community Cen-
tre, Saturday, June 15, 1985. Best wishes- only.
