We buy tickets on lotteries and dream on. But alas, most of us pass it offas wishful thinking or dream- ing about things that can never really be. But, have you ever thought about working out a formula to become a milli- onaire? Is it possible for Mr. and Mrs. Ordinary Cana- dian to achieve that status? It certainly is, if you use the magic formula of TMR (Time + Money + Rateof Re- turn) and recognize that TIME is the most impor- tant item of those three. . Three Ingredients All three are important. Money is a necessary ingre- dient ,in the formula„pnd rate of return is equally im- portant. But time, which can never be regained, is by far the most important. Ask yourself the ques- tion: "When I was 25 years old — or — I am now 25 years old — can or could I save $40.73 per .month?" For -many people today that represents only 4 hours or less work per month, or one hour or less per week. Put- ting it simply, it means sav- ing $1.85 .per working day, assuming there are 22 working days per month. Many people spend 'that much per day, 30 days per month (not just 22 working days) on such things as i- garettes and' junk foo , which de us no good. If you do save $40.7 per month for40years,at 15 per cent per year gain, you will '- end up being a millionaire., • It's that simple. But what if you only have 30 years to retirement? Then you''would have to Save- over four times as. much per month, again as - IT'S YOUR MONEY Paul J. Rockel '• suming",15 per cent return, which amounts to $166.66 per month. So... if you start at age 35, saving that $166.66 monthly, at age 65 you'll be worth $1 million. So far, most of us, if we -really wanted to, can be- come millionaires". But ... most, of us only "dream" about wealth when we're young, and really don't make any plans or formu- late programs to accom- plish it. We can justify spending everything we earn on cars, good times, family, house, furniture, children, college, etc. It's only in later life that we start thinking about our financial future (a very se- rious mistake) and at that time we've lost the most val- uable asset in creating wealth, namely a good part of the time needed to build wealth., If we are 45 years old we would have to save $707.35 monthly, and if we were 50 years old it would be $1,522.98 per month, to achieve that millionaire status at age 65. These fig - tires assume 15 per cent av- erage annual return, and you leave all the assets there to compound. A normal retum The investment fund in- ';dustry figures that 15 per Gent average annual return is normal for good invest- ment (mutual) funds. There are -many, many funds in the past 10 years that have averaged over 15 per cent, and' some have averages over that time span that ex- ceed,20 and 25 per cent a year. True, it is never 15 per cent a year, but there are years of 20 per cent, 30 per cent and higher gains, other years with little gain, or even a loss. But, the 10 years and longer averages usually achieve 15 per cent and better. Here's the formula (@15%) to become a mil- - lionaire. -. Age 25 = 40.73 monthly " 30 = 82.24 monthly " 35= $166.66 monthly " 40 =$340.54 monthly "" 45 = $707.35 monthly " 50=$1,522.98monthly " 51=$1,789.02 monthly " 52=$2,109.45 monthly " 53=$2,498.61 monthly " 54 =$2,976,01 monthly 55 .$3,568.99 monthly " 60= $10,747.50 Monthly. At age 45; you'd have to save $707.35 monthly, at 15 per cent. If you rate of re- turn was 11 per cent, you'd have to save $1,169.34 monthly, which is $461.99 MORE per month.
