Unfortunately, it is no joking manner and nothing showed that more clearly than the made -for - television movie, "Do You Remember Love"; seen last week on the CBS network and Channel 13. It was a disturbing and emotional two hours that left the viewer wet -eyed and frightened .. for this is a disease that can strike a person at the peak of his career and the height of his physical strength and usefulness. The cause is not. known and there is no cure. Barbara is a multi -gifted university professor and poet- when at 50, she begins showingsigns that something is wrong. It begins with little things, like going the wrong direction to her classroom or putting salt in the``sugar bowl. But when she is tested and diagnosed, the disease progresses quickly. In the middle of a lecture, she forgets what she is talking about and leaves' the classroom; she becomes verbally abusive to her mother and physically abusive with her husband; and when, in a difficult and courageous move after weeks of ignoring her, her son comes to visit, • she doesn't even know who he is. For years, Alzheimer's Disease in the elderly was misdiagnosed as senility or hardening of the arteries. Then younger people began having symptoms and research found it was really a degenerative brain disease that struck adults of all ages. Bringing it more into the open through workshops, seminars, family -help groups and the famous coming forth to talk about it, ,has made it a household word and a disease to be feared. Those involved with last week's movie hope it will encourage people to support more research into the cause 'of the disease and see the sufferers and their families with more compassion. Joanne Woodward had two reasons for accepting the role of Barbara. First, it was a good dramatic role and secondly, her mother is in a nursing home with what now Woodward believes to be Alzheimer's. Her spellbinding performance told it like it is and the viewer, along with those who loved her, couldn't help but mourn .the loss of this brilliant mind and fun -loving person as she slowly slipped into a world of her own. As her husband, Richard Kiley portrayed the absolute anguish of living with this nightmare. There is nothing so devastating as watching a loved one becoming 'a stranger and being powerless to help. The feelings of frustration and sorrow as one struggles to cope with the moods, and the guilt when one becomes impatient, are truly over- whelming. The final emotional scene of the moVie was a deeply moving one for everyone who has lived with this ill- ness. What it did not show was the agony still ahead for this loving family as Bar- bara would quickly become trapped in an- existence where she would know no one, understand nothing and be unable to do even the simplest task. A family who lives this horror is never the same again. In timely news reports coming out around the same time, it was announced that actor Edmond O'Brien, whose excellent work was recognized with two Oscar nominations, one Oscar win, and many fine reviews, had died in a sanitorium at the age of 69 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. And movie superstar of the '30s and '40s, Rita Hayworth, whose dramatic story really brought Alzheimer's before the public, was unable to attend the wedding of her daughter, Princess Yasmin, daughter of the late Aly Khan and Hayworth. She spends her life in a wheelchair, isolated from the rest of the world. 0 Be My Guest O Mr: Dressup Q Good Company m Fitness, Break 00® Press Your Luck 0 Celebrity Cooks O Expos Baseball: Montreal at San Diego (R) (Thur) 0 Julius Erving's Sports Focus (Mon) 0 Winning Golf: Tips From Pros (Wed) 10:45 0 Friendly Giant 11:00 0 Cityline 0 Pizzazz am Polka Dot Door Q I Love Lucy Q Sesame Street 0 One Life To Live 0 Guess What (starts Mon.)
