PRICEY PAIR — Rare chairs are late Victorian.
Cane chairs
are rare
By James G. McCollam
Member, Antique
Appraisers Association
of America
Q. To the best of my
knowledge, these chairs
have been in our family for
at least 100 years. Can you
confirm their age and tell me
how much they are worth?
A. These are late Victorian
chairs; made about 18Z9 to
1890. Cane bottom and 'back
chairs with arms are quite
rare; the going price on
these would be in the $175 to
$225 range.

Strawberries —
bright flavor- of spring
By Antonial Allegra
Strawberries appeal at
table or as low -calorie
snacks throughout the day
and are quick to prepare.
Consider the pleasures —
visual as well as gustatory —
of a rich cheesecake topped
with strawberry halves and
sauced with strawberry
puree. Or imagine a fluffy
biscuit -based shortcake
piled with fresh strawberries
and• a mound of sweetened
cream.
The variety of strawberry
uses is unlimited: jammed in
a flaky pie crust; sliced on
ice cream sundaes; floating
in fizzy punches; held in bril-
liant suspension in jams, jel-
lies or syrups.
To choose the best berries,
growers suggest seeking
fully ripened, bright red ber-
ries, as they do not ripen
after being picked. The ber-
ries should be well-rounded,
with a natural shine and
bright green leaves. Never
wash strawberries or re-
move the green caps until it
is time to eat the berries.
Washing removes the na-
tural protective outer layer,
and the caps protect the
strawberry and help pre-
serve flavor, texture ,and
nutrients.

Q. I know that old silver
and pewter are collected, but
how about aluminum? If it is
being collected, how do the
prices compare to silver and
pewter?
A. Hand -wrought alumin-
um housewares were first
made after World War I,
which, means that the oldest
pieces are about 60 years old
— certainly not antiques.
The prices are quite low as
the following will indicate:
Ashtrays, $2 to $3;
Baskets, $3 to $6; Bowls, $5
to $10; Coasters, $1 to $2; Ice
Buckets, $10 to $12; Pitchers,
$5 to $10; Trays, $10 to $25.
