A large banner across the front of the house proclaimed "Welcome Home, Fraser" and inside:was swinging cradle built by his grandfather, Hans Kuyvenhoven, to match a photograph of an early Canadian cradle from the 1 820s that mom Debbie found in a book in the library. Deb- bie .explained that her father-in-law, founder of Royal Homes Limited of Wingham, has a tradition of building a new cradle for the first grandchild in each family. Fraser is the son of Doug and Debbie Kuyvenhoven of Wingham. MRS. Gibson home I GORRIE — Members of Unit Two of the Gorrie United Church Women held their May meeting at the home of Mrs. R. Gibson on Wednesday, May 8. Mrs. Nellie Taylor conducted the worship service following a musical interlude, opening with a prayer, followed by the reading of Psalm 54 by Mrs. Janet Grainger. A seasonable poem, "Making a Garden", was read. Mrs. ,Taylor chose parables from the Bible that pertained to the land and its products. She explained that everything is dependent on the soil for life in some form and the soil is a stern teacher that cooperation is the key to preservation. She added that people must all cooperate with one another and a short discussion followed her meditation. President Mrs. Grainger conducted the business. She reminded members of the ham and turkey supper on June 12 and the church lawn sale June 8 at 10 a.m. A suggestion was made that a bake sale and noon refresh- ments be part of that event. An excellent bake and plant sale was conducted MRS. CINDY JOHANN Belmore Last Friday evening a surprise birthday party was held at the community centre for Harry Busby. His wife Elaine and children Angie and Sandy arranged the party for him. Many people attended the party whichwit be a night Mr. Busby neer will forget. A bridal shower was held at the Presbyterian Church last Saturday evening for Mary Dickson, whose wedding is May 25. The community sends the happy couple good luck and best wishes. Alan Darling has returned to the hospital where he will be having a skin graft done to his arm: We all wish him a speedy recovery. The ball season is back and all the local, teams are practising for their up- coming games. The Belmore Bulldogs had a practice Sunday Sunday and will play their first game May 23 at 9 p.m. in Belmore. Teams` interested in having their scores reported should call Me at 392-6258. with Mrs. J. Strong as auctioneer. The president adjourned the meeting with prayer and a -social hour was enjoyed, with refreshments served by Mrs. Lillian Walker and the hostess. Members were reminded that the June meeting will be one week earlier at the home of Mrs. Edgar Dane, due to the ham and turkey supper date. fes- MRS. The printing will be done at the Howick Com- munity Centre on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 'p.m. All .children must be ac- companied by an adult. Trinity ACW will pack bale in June. FORDWICH — The Trinity Anglican Church Women held their May meeting at the home of Mrs. Wellington Hargrave last Thursday night with the president, Mrs. Doug Bunker, presiding and opening the meeting with the Members' Prayer. Mrs. Bill Sothern led in devotions from the Book of John. The meditation, "To Live as If", was given and she closed with a poem entitled "When I've Time to Go to Church". Mrs. Emmerson Ferguson gave a very interesting report of the ACW annual held recently in London. The roll call was answered by 16 members with a verse on Mother's Day. It was an- nounced that Mrs. "Jack Douglas's group will be in charge of the May 31 bowling banquet. The South Saugeen Deanery will be held June 4 in Belgrave. Jean McBride will show her films on Uganda. It was announced the Gorrie group will be in charge of the bus trip to Stratford on June.18. Plans were made for the an- niversary service on June 9 at 11 a.m. in Trinity Church. CAROLE HOHENADEL, an accomplished young singer from the Fordwich area, delighted the crowd at last Wednesday evening's Talent Parade '85 held at the Wingham Town Hall. Miss Hohenadel won several awards at last month's music festival In Walkerton and last week sang numbers from "My Fair Lady" and "Oklahoma", two popular musicals. The guest speaker will be Rev. Ted Scott. The ACW will have teaspoons for sale commemorating the 100th anniversary. Bales will be packed again in June and articles are to be left at the church or contact Mrs. Harold Foster at 335- 3826. Mrs. Foster read a thank - you letter for the blankets which had been sent to the north. Rev. William Gray closed the meeting with prayer, after which an auction was held with the proceeds to go to ACW work. Lunch was served by Elva Foster and Mrs. Marsh, assisted by the hostess. Afternoon unit meets in parlor FORDWICH — The af- ternoon unit of the United Church Women met at two o'clock in the Church parlor last Thursday with the president, w Miss M. McEl- wain, in charge of the business. She was assisted by the secretary, Mrs. Jean Clarkson. A total of 19 members answered the roll call by bringing a get -well card. A letter was read from Alma College. Plans were made for putting up signs for the strawberry social and for the Brownie and Guide banquet. The meeting then was turned over to the conveners, Mrs. George Richards, Mrs. Bruce Kennedy and Mrs. Scott Clarkson. They read a poem on the most powerful tool we have: prayer: The scripture and Lord's Prayer were read and responded to by Mrs. Clarkson. The ladies then sang the Lord's Prayer. A skit, "Hallowed Be Thy Name", was.presented. Mrs. Richards then gave a study on Korea. She described their type of flower arranging and how there is a place made in each home to hold the arrange- ment. She arranged a centre- piece f6r the worship centre and explained the symbols of heaven, man and Earth. She then read a paper which had been given at Alma College last year. It "said that women have come a long way in Eastern countries, where they always have been servants to men. The ladies learned a widow cannot remarry in Korea. Rev. 'Marzee closed the meeting with a prayer. Mrs. Mary Kelly, Mrs. W. Wilson, Mrs. H. Gibson and Mrs. Jack Wilson served lunch. Lung .Assoc. dinner meeting The Lung Association of Huron and Perth Counties will be holding its annual dinner meeting May 29 at Stratford.,, The guest speaker will be Mrs. Anna Wissing, clinical specialist in cardio- pulmonary service at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sullivan returned last Thursday to Greenwood, Nova Scotia, after spending a couple of weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Miller, and other relatives in the area. Stewart Schaefer spent last Friday with Mrs. E. A. Schaefer. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wendt of Toronto spent the weekend at the same home. Anson Demerling returned home Sunday after spending the past week in the Palmerston Hospital. Mrs. Demerling also is ,home again after spending a week with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Goldrich in Guelph. Mrs. Joan Longstaffe of Toronto is spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Demerling. A roll-a-thon will be held May 25 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Palmerston arena, with proceeds going to the Palmerston and District CAA.
