Page 8—The Winghwrn Adyance-Times, May 15, 1985 i rro Cheerleaders win Wonderland event The Acro Cheer Squad from F. E. Madill Secondary school., Wingham., scored another impressive victory in its second major com- petition this year. At the second annual high school open competition at Canada's Wonderland last weekend, the cheerleaders from Madill topped 37 other teams from across Ontario' to win top spot. It was not an easy victory, reported Louanna Alexan- der, one of the squad's coaches. The second -place team from Port Credit had Wingham more than a little nervous with a very impres- sive demonstration of its own, while the third-place squad from North Bay also gave strong competition. However the Wingham squad came through with "the best show I've ever seen Book review: War Brides You are leaving your homeland; you are leaving your family and you are leaving friends maybe never to return again. How would you feel? Then you fall in love with your husband's father or your husband finds Work_ more exciting than you! A love story. Three Australian girls, Sheila, Dawn and Gaynor, each married to U.S. army men. Words like, "Oh, come on, mate" show us their Australian language. They have become separated until after the Second World War, and no are preparing to leave their homeland to travel taa country they have never been to before. They must begin their lives all over again, facing good times, "You'll have to ex- cuse me tonight, I'm in a mood of jubilation" and bad times. The story tells of their marriages: "We'll get by; I think it was sweet of you to offer to help me with the dishes," their children, ."Oh Mummy, I'm glad we came to America; I love these creepy crawlies"; their pro- blems, "I come home after two weeks on the road and all I get is a cross examina- tion!" and their triumphs, "I am home Billy; I'm home free." It is told with such vividness and feeling; you, become part of it. Lois Battle, the author, is herself the daughter of a "war bride". She has had the experience of moving, to be- gin a new life in a new country. She would have first hand information from which to write her book. I have read many war stories and I enjoyed this one tre- mendously. It portrays the trials and hardships of a new life, but also the joys. A worthwhile book to read, it is a combination of many things — fighting and love, sadness and happiness; win- ning and losing. —Wilma Vandervelde. in my `life," Mrs. Alexander enthused. iIt was just - fabulous' She noted that all three of the top teams combined boys and girls on their squads. This 'is a step which Madill took this year for the first time and it ppears.to be thy coming thing in cheerlead- ing; The cheerleaders, who -won a large keeper trophy and individual trophies for their efforts, also performed for visitors during Grade 8 night at the school on Monday. Newsy nothings Hello again! Just think, only 19 days left of school. Let's hear it for summer va cations and summer jobs. Speaking of employment, rumour has it that a new garage or an outhouse' its being erected across from the parking lot. Bets are be- ing waged now to see if the house will also have a new bay window (but will Bert win.. ). Some of my more reliable sources have stated that the Drama Club's Spring Musical production, "The Spirit of Broadway" is well underway, and will soon grace the stage. May 30, 31 and June 1 are the big per- formance dates, and Maud hopes each -and every one in the entire world (or at least Huron and Bruce counties) will go to see the show. Happy B -days go out this week to Marilyn Jamieson, Rob Willis, Jamie McPher- son, Gary Armstrong, Glenda Ireland, Mike Murray, Lori Stanley and Tom Inglis. At press time members of the Acro Cheer Squad were "eager little beavers" about a contest at Canada's Won- derland on May 11. Hope- fully, G.L. will be in fine 'shape for the performance. Good luck from everyone at Madill. Well, this is about all the new news for this week, —Love, Maud P.S. Gary Pipe's REAL birthday is on May 12! Soccer On May 8 the senior soccer team played against Sea - forth here at Madill. The score was 4-2 for Seaforth, with Wingham's goals being scored by Darryl Button and Bert Sjaarda. Their last game of the sea- son was May 10 in Wingham- against St. Mary's. Their coach, Mr. Jack Mali, says they have im- proved greatly over the sea- son, especially when having to compete against teams with members who have played town league soccer. Thanks go to the captains Bert Sjaarda and Richard Day and to the coach Mr. Mali. L J V JI - JUNIOR MATH CONTEST WINNERS at F. E. Madill S. (Clint Pewtress Photo) Drinking and driving Are you one of the many teenagers who go out and get totally loaded after you told your parents that you woildn't drink and drive? I know I do once in a while. Teenagers know that it's„ dangerous, but usually get upset at their parents for giving them a hard time. They usually brush it off and say it will not happen to them, and go out and have a good time. But picture this: a carload of teenagers out on a tour having a good time when all of a sudden you look behind you and see a car gaining on you. Then you see the dread- ed flashing lights. You pull over and a policeman gets out and strolls up to'the car. You're sitting there think- ing, "Is he going to find our, beer?" All of a sudden he says, "whose beer is this?" Bang, you get a fifty-three dollar fine for drinking and driving. You and your' friends scrape up the money and pay it. But the next weekend you go out get some more beer and go on another tour. Movie review: First Assignment The only way to even begin to describe this , movie is "wacky". Although it is ab- solutely ridiculous, you can't help but give in to hysteria as the graduates of "Police Academy" tackle their new- est charge. The ever smart Aleck Ma- honey, as always, manages to drive his commanding of- ficer around the bend and meets his greatest challenge yet. A gang of hoods are tak- ing over the streets, looting and terrorizing the resident businessmen and citizens of the neighborhood. But, due to a practical joke on Cap- tain Maowzer, Mahoney and his partner are suspended. The chief, too, is fired due to his incompetence 'in captur- ing the group. Together the three plan a strategy to corner the dread- ed mob. Mahoney is to im- personate a hood in order to find out where their hideout is located. He succeeds until the ring leader realizes he is a police officer. (due to a technical problem) . Chaos breaks loose. Ma - honey's friends — High Tower Hocks, Tackleberry, etc. — come to his rescue, managing to complicate the situation even more. But, as in most movies, good tri- umphs over evil, and the gang is apprehended. This movie is not without . romance. The gun -crazed Tackleberry finally meets the girl of his dreams, (she's crazy about guns too) and falls in love with something other than his pistols. Their first assignment? You can bet it won't be their last — but will we be ready for them? —Julie Stewart 0-0-0 The square timber trade in pine in eastern Canada ex- tended from 1808 to 1850 and was followed in the 1850s by the timber trade as recipro- city and expanding markets opened a massive demand for Canadian lumber in the United States. All it takes is a' split second and it's all over. But it's not just you and your friends you may hurt. Think of the cute, blue-eyed, blonde haired little girl on the bike or the family of four going to the beach. When you're out getting drunk, swerving from ditch to ditch, think of them. So the next time someone asks you if you want to go on, a tour, think of the lives of others on the road and ask yourself this question: "Do you really need or want to take thatchance?" `" ° -Todd Ritchie 12F' BUYING AN ANNUITY' FOR THE HIGHEST QUOTE AVAILABLE EXPERT RRSP 8 ANNUITY ADVICE CALL ABCANNUITIEStro. 53 WEST ST., GODERICH 1-800-265-5503 goom00000.. * WINGHAM i\%. ir_ pp. \ INCORPORATED o° NOTICE Town of *Ingham LICENSING • Dogs and Bicycles THURSDAYS - 12 noon - 5 p.m. BICYCLE BY-LAW requires bicycles to be licensed and prohibits the riding of bicycles on the sidewalks of the downtown section.
