The achievements of the Inca nation during the '100 years of its existence are probably equal to those of any nation in history. Their highways were often built with heavy stone and cov- ered thousands of miles of difficult terrain. The roads were designed.: for foot travel and their ar- mies moved along them with great speed. The Incas had wise and just rulers who started schools, distributed food and wealth, and taught their people to weave fine fabrics, and to make metal tools and fine jewelry. Their message system was far more efficient than our modern-day U.S. mail, and relay runners were highly trained athletes who could cover the 150 miles of country each day. The entire Inca empire received important news, al- most more quickly than we receive news today, via their super highway system and trained, runners.
