A documentary film
on the plight of a
generation on hold
"I can't let go of the hope,
of the belief, that you can be
anything you want to be. I
• have a lot of great expecta-
tions. I just hope that I don't
fall too hard."
Desiree is one of a new
generation of Canadians.
She belongs with the dispro-
portionate number of young
people in Canada who cannot
find a job. At this time in
their lives, and particularly
in this the International
Year of The Youth, these
young Canadians should be
ooking to a future full of pro-
mise and possibility. Instead
they face bleak and dis-
couraging prospects.. The
hopes, the frustrations, the
fears and the determination
of four of these unemployed
young people are featured in
the one-hour documentary
Generation On Hold, 'Mon-
day, May 13 at 8:00 p.m. edt
(8:30 p.m. ndt) on CBC Tele-
vision.
Desiree thought a g000d
education would lead to a
rewarding career. Yet 1%
years after graduating from
university she was working
as a waitress in her parents
restaurant in Vegreville,
Alberta. Though its a big
step, she's now determined
to try her luck in Toronto. "I'
got into the real world and I
realized it's not as easy as I
thought it was going to be.
I'm afraid of going to Toron-
to. I'm afraid of failing. But I
feel that life is passing my
by."
Rob—always thought he
would follow in the family
tradition of working in the
mining industry in Sudbury,
Ontario. But even after tak-
ing a community college pro-
gram m millwrighting he
couldn't get aob. So Rob is
moving on, looking for work
anywhere he thinks he can
find it. "The day I have to
consider going on welfare
will be the hardest day of my
life. You pick blueberries
and live off blueberries
before you go on welfare."
Dominique hates the
negative image society has
of people on welfare. "You
don't have much under-
standing, everybody looks at
you as _lazy, as, jus_ wanting
to sit back in your home and
listen to music and take dope
and enjoy life. It's com-
pletely wrong." For the last
seven years, Dominique has
been caught in a vicious cir-
cle off temporary work,
Unemployment Insurance
and welfare in Montreal,
Quebec. She is angry and un-
happy and doesn't think she
can stand much more of this
treadmill.
Terry is the kind of jobless
teenager most often stereo-
typed. From Newfoundland
but now living in Toronto,
he's a high school dropout
with no Skills and no fixed
address. For Terry, holding
down a job is almost
impossible. "I look for work
like ... and you get fed up
with it after a while. You
can't do much if you don't
know how to read ors ll.
You can't go nowhere if you
don't know how to speak pro-
per."

'Many of the people in-
volved in theproduction of
Generation On Hold,
researchers, cameramen,
directors are young people
from the hometowns of these
four," says producer Cbrista
Singer. ' Their input provid-
ed a youthful perspective
and insight into the problems"
of youth and helped portray
the uncertainties and aspira-
tions through their own
eyes." Generation On Hold is
a TV Ontario production in
association with the Cana-
dian Broadcasting Cor-
poration.
A psychopath causes
"A Death In California"
a powerful mini-series
A Beverly Hill socialite
falls in love with the psycho-
path who murdered her boy-
friend and raped her in "A
Death In California", an in-
triguing, four-hour thriller
airing over two nights, Sun-
day, May 12 9 -11 p.m. (Part
1) and Monday, May 13, 9 - 11
p.m. (Part 2), on the Global
Television Network.
, Cheryl Ladd, Sam Elliott
and .Alexis Smith star in "A
Death In California" a sear-
ing dramatization of an ac-
tual 1960's murder case that
still ranks as one of the most
disturbing and puzzling
trial's ever in the state of
California.
Hope Maters (Ladd),
divorced, mother of three
children and in the process
of getting a divorce from her
second husband, looks for-
ward to, spending the
weekend with her boyfriend,
Richard Morgan (Granville
Van Dusen). Morgan in-
fornjs MAsters that he has
been selected one of the most
eligible bachelors in the Los
Angeles area and 'news-
paper reporter' D. Jordan
Williams (Elliott) will spend
part of the weekend to obtain
an interview.
Williams, a vicious yet in-
telligent psychopath turns
the weekend into a
murderous rampage. He
fires a single gunshot from
close range and snuffs out
the life of Morgan. Williams
then turns his attention to
Masters whom he repeatedly
rapes.
In an effort to manipulate
her trust, Williams fabri-
cates a story about her hus-
band. He tells her that her
husband has putout a con-
tract on her and the children
to collect the insurance
money and repay his debts to
'the organization'. Confused
and not knowing where to
turn Masters finds herself
trusting Williams. Together,
they concoct a story about an
intruder.
She becomes so dependent
on Williams that she allows
him to live in her home and
drive her children to school.
Ironically, it is Williams
who contacts the ''Police and
informs them of the murder
and the `unknown intruder'.
Masters, however, is ar-
rested and even at this point
continues .to protect
Williams.
The police, baffled by the
case, sus-ect Williams is im-
plicated in the murder. In
order to trap him, they
release Masters in an at-
tempt to bait him. Williams
frequently calls Masters to
profess his love for her and,
through .the phone calls the
police are able to locate him.
The two of them are then in-
dicted formurder.
During the trial, Williams
conducts a brilliant defense
on his own behalf and at one
point the District Attorney
becomes concerned that he
may get off.
Eventually, Williams is
found guilty and sentenced
to life imprisonment. And
the perverse love story con-
tinues as Masters writes and
visits Williams in San Quen-
tin.
