The Wingham Advance-Times, 1985-04-24, Page 33engaged girl was required to
have in America around
1700. The superstition grew
that it was bad luck for a girl
to work on her own marriage
quilt, so the girlfriends of the
bride each brought a block,
usually appliqued, to her
house. They stitiched them.
together and quilted the top
and finally gave the quilt to,
the bride for her wedding
present.
A small piece of patchwork
made of autographed pat-
ches turned into a cushion,
can still make a charming
memento of a wedding anni-
versary or special occasion.
From a mixture of plain
and small flowered pattern
fabrics, , cut three inch
squares, or two by three inch
rectangles. Use the plain
fabrics for the signature
written and then em-
broidered. Join them in a hit
and miss fashion with the
floral patches.
I have more fascinating
stories on quilts, but they
must wait for a future
column.

TAX TIP
OF THE WEEK
Q. 14yy son, a senior in high
school next term, worked
during the summer months.
His net income was $2,700.
Since this is o%er the $2,600

everything off until next
week.
And then there are the Do-
wah-do's. The Do-wah-do's
have motivation right up
there with Lee Iococca. They
have the goals of Mother
Theresa. They have the'fire
and enthusiasm of a Sunday
morning electronic minister.
But they conduct their lives
like a maestro with a rip in •
his -pants and a zipper that is
stuck'. He doesn't know
which way to turn.
The Do-wah-do dieter is a
classic. He or she will order
a large pizza with everything
and swill it gown with a 2
litre bottle of Tab. He will
park illegally in a handicap-
ped parking spot while he is
buying jogging clothes. He
will eat a glazed doughnut
with a cup of black coffee
with three tablespoons of
Nutra-Sweet.
When a Do-wah-do person
stops smoking, it's never
cold turkey. His first words
to everyone he meets is,
"I've stopped smoking. Feel
just great. You should try it.
I can taste food now and
don't wake up with that bad
taste in my mouth.- By the
way, could I bum a cigaret-
te? I just like to have some-
thing in my hand."
I've met a million D,o-wah-
do housewives in my time.
They have fresh flowers on
the table, guest towels lined
neatly in a row in the bath-
room and their countertops
are straight from the model
home.
But the oven looks like a
smoking volcano, there is
dirty underwear under the
bed and don't even think of
opening a drawer or you'll
never get it shut again.
With them, hope always
springs eternal. By their
bedsides there will always be
a copy of something written
by John LeCarre. On top of it
will be a copy of "Hollywood
Craft Tal
By Louisa Rush
Last week I gave some in-
teresting history and back-
ground on the art of patch-
work and applique. This
week I'll describe some of
the traditional quilts and
how they came into being.
Patchwork is 'an un-
ashamedly sentimental craft
which from its origins has
been connected with sharing
and neighborliness, particu-
larly in North America.
"Friendship Quilts" were
made to commemorate a
special occasion, to honor a
hero, or to help a family who
were down on their luck, or
were going West to start a
new life.
Each neighbor would give
a block, either pieced or
decorated with applique, and
they would all meet to join
the quilt blocks into a
finished quilt. Sometimes a
particular theme, such as
animals, flowers or a family
history was decided upon,
and then it was called an
"Album Quilt". If at a
ceremony it was called a
"Presentation Quilt".
"Freedom Quilts" were
only made, for young meri!
On a man's twenty-first
birthday, young girls of his
acquaintance were invited to
his house. They spent the
afternoon before the cele-
bration supper stitching the
quilt top together. It was
then put away until the time
cameto add it to the others
in his future wife's "bottom
drawer" or "hope chest".
"Signature Quilts" were a
recognized way of making
money for charity. Usually
made from three inch
squares, the patches were
"sold"; the purchaser's
name was written with in-
delible ink or embroidered
onto the patch, which was
then worked into the quilt.
The "Marriage Quilt" was
the last and most splendid of
the thirteen quilts an
Wives" by Jackie Collins.
You are probably wonder-
ing how I know so much
about the Do-wah-do's.
• There is one in our family. I
have no intention of telling
you which one it is. I will only
say that I bought one of those
handbags that has 36 coni'
partments for bringing order
to my life. There was a hook
for my car keys, a slot for a
flashlight, a pocket for all
my credit cards, a place for
loose change, a clip for fold-
ing money, an insert to hold
my checkbook, plus marked
areas for my lipstick, nail
clip, glasses, comb, nose tis-
sue and road maps.
One day I rested my gum
on the holder for the pen and
it stuck the top of the hand-
bag together.
The best thing you can say
about us is we try.
Fastidious
cats.. .
WHAT WILL THEY EAT?
If you are perplexed by
your cat's eating habits,
don't worry. Cats are finicky
eaters.
The first step in avoiding a
fussy eater is to feed your cat
more than one or two kinds
of food says Dr. Glenn
Brown, a nutrition expert
and pet -food Consultant for
the Canadian Veterinary
Medical Association. He
says cats can develop 'flavor
addiction'. If a kitten is fed
only beef kidneys, for
example, that may well be
all she will eat. Feeding only
one food can also lead to
health problems because the
diet may not be nutritionally
complete.
On the other hand, Dr.
Brown says, "cats are well-
known to have flavor
fatigue". Experiments have
shown that if a cat is fed the
same food for three days in a
row, she may stop eating al-
together. "They seem to run
on a three-day cycle," says
Dr. Brown.
As well, cats are meal -
eaters, they don't nibble.
Most cats eat on a 27 -hour
cycle, so every once . in a
while they may skip a meal.
Dr. Brown adds, however,
that there are cats who will
neat everything in sight.
There's really no hard and
fast rule.
In the wild, cats are meat -
eating animals, they don't
eat plants. But they do obtain
vitamins and minerals they
need by eating the stomach
of their prey. Cats particu-
larly require pre -formed
vitamin A because their
bodies do not manufacture it.
That's why vegetable sup-
plements are needed in a
cat's diet. Manufacturers of
pet foods usually add these
supplements to meat pro-
ducts. They are important
for vitamins and minerals as
well as for fibre used in the
digestive tract.
If your cat has started
eating your house plants, it
may be for a variety of
reasons. Researchers have
snot been able to find the
exact cause but they have
several theories: the animal.
is bored, she is curious about
the flavor, she has an upset
stomach and is looking for
something to stimulate her
digestive system dr she may
lack some nutrient in her
diet. Dr. Brown says the first
two reasons are the most
likely.
Cat. owners also some-
times wonder whether they
should feel their Pets dry
food or.canned food. Accord-
ing to tests, cats prefer
canned foods because they
are more palatable and
canned foods offer a wider
variety of flavours.
Dry food gives your cat the
same amount of nutrients at
a more economical price.
However, it is very im-
portant to provide fresh,
clean water at all times.
Some people think cats
don't need much water
because they were originally
desert animals. Although
their kidneys reserve water,
feeding dry food with in-
sufficient .water can lead to
urinary problems.
