This probably would be more ex- pensive and certainly would change the appearance of your house. Q. The furnace in our house is located in the attic, and works all right except that the air comes out luke- warm. I have noticed that the outlet ducts hayse fiber- glass insulation around them, but 'the intake duets have none. These ducts, are right below the cold roof. Would we get better heat if those intake duets were insulated?—E.V. A. I doubt that insulating the cold ducts would improve the heat capacity of your furnace. The air coming in will be the temperature of the air outside. I would advise that you consult the manufacturer of your furnace regarding its lack of performance. Q. Have you ever com across an effective way t clean a badly oil -stained garage? We have trie detergents, a product mad 'by Trojan Manufacturin Co. called Degeraseall, an others. ' We rolled strips of to paper down because the floo was so unsightly and now w can't get the tar paper up In California, wher garages are always in front so many people who visi come through the garage Thanks for any suggest ions—M.P., San Marcos Calif. A. First you will nee to remove the tar paper. Try renting a sander. and sanding with a coarse sandpaper. To remove the grease and oil stains on the concrete, first scrub stains with benzine or grease solvent. Then mix one part sodium citrate to six parts of water and six parts of commercial glycerine. Add sufficient whiting powder to form `a thick paste. A coat of this paste should be kept on 'the stain for one week and new paste added when it dries., out. Then flush dried -out second layer away with water: -The stains should be gone. For rust stains, 'use the same mixture as above, but if stain still remains make another paste of one part sodium citrate crystals to six parts of water and add suffi- cient powdered'whiting. Heavy layers of this mixture spread on and allowed to dry should remove rust stains. After cleaning, the area where stains have been removed may look lighter than the surrounding -con- crete. To help prevent further, staining, . apply .•a :concrete sealer after ,you have removed .the stains and thoroughly cleaned the en- tire: area. The 'garage floor also can be painted with a good, masonry paint ' to. further' enhance its attract- iveness. Q. I was wondering if you have another way of remov- ing appliques off a shower door and tub bottom, besides using rubbing alcohol. I have tried this and still could not remove all of 'the sticky sub- stance. Can'you recommend anything that would be d faster and' easier?,--C.M. A. 'Hedberb of Oceanside, e Calif., adds this suggestion: • "Spray generously with e Spray 'n' Wash, then "add a couple of inches of very hot t water and allow to stand • several hours.. (This, of course, is for cleaning the , tub.) The adhesive will then come off without damaging the tub surface." Q. I have a 12 -foot fibre- glass campster trailer that needs some paint. Is a do-it- yourself job. Ok? If so, what is the preparation, type of paint and method of ap- plication recommended? Also, can the aluminum awning casing take a paint that is used on fiberglass?* W.B., Redondo Beach, Calif. A. This could be a do-it- yourself project if you use a good quality paint and proper preparation. Wash down the fiberglass surface and be certain it is cleaned of any dirt or grease. Consult your local paint dealer for the bestpaint to use on fiberglass. The best method to apply is with a long -nap roller. ; However, youraluminum awning casing will need a different kind of paint First, the aluminum frames should be cleaned of all residue, using something like trisodium phosphate, available in hardware stores. Then the aluminum should be sanded, smoothing out all pits you can, because the paint will not hide them. • Next comes one coat of aluminum metal primer and then two coats of exterior synthetic enamel. , Check with your paint dealer for these products. , • TAX TIP OF THE WEEK A PUBLIC SERVICE OF H&R BLOCK Q. 1 am planning to retire in two years. Will the new for-' ra.ard averaging be of any - benefit to mc? A. Yes. If you are in a high marginal tat' bracket, you should consider forward av- eraging of any qualified in- come. This is especially true if youexpect your retire- ment income to be less than g your current income. t Crossroads—Apr. 24, 1985—Page 9 Vines create garden space By Patrick Denton Like most avid flower growers, I never seem to have space each year for all the kinds I like to grow. As well as all the old favorites without which the yard would seem downright un- dressed, there are so many new flowers to try every year. I can't imagine our garden without sweet peas, for example. We have two circular wire enclosures that arefixed in-place at different spots each year for these de- lightful, fragrant climbers. This way, they take up little space and can be enjoyed in different ,parts of the yard from year to year. The base of the vines usually•are dressed up with a frothy skirt of annual white baby's breath. Flowering vines grown on trellises, wire enclosures or fences provide blossoms without using a great deal of space. Last year our family also 'enjoyed canary bird flower, an attractive climb- ing kind of nasturtium (Tropaeolum peregrinum)' against a lightly shaded part of fence in moist soil. Its frilly little delicate, yellow -spurred blossoms highlighted the attractive deeply lobed foliage. A fast bloomer, our vines were cov- ered in little "canaries" in early summer from trans- plants seeded,'indoors early in the spring. A vine that is a realshow- piece in pots or hanging baskets is •Thunbergia, or black-eyed Susan. The flow- ers, in clear, bright shades of yellow and orange, all have black centers, or eyes. These should . be started indoors, too, and grow'•► in sun or light shade. I've been asked by a number of people what annual vine would be best to :grow as .a summer -only screen•for a very sunny, hot porch. I can't think of any- thing better than.scarlet run- ner beans. Planted in rich soil and trained up stout twine, rough . stakes or laths, these vines with their yivid scarlet flow- ers and edible beans will make an 8 -foot summer screen: Keep the .beans for eating, picked while young•to keep the vines vigorous and the flowers coming. Another great way to enjoy flowers without using any garden space is to grow them in pots. Each year we fill our patio with them,, both at round level and on two. hree-tiered wood frame ;4 ...invites you to join tlie thousands who have visited our second outstanding Furniture Showplace. ..•.G•f• •••A`••G• II • o"1 4I•••! •yOre riii 3 MILLION DOLLAR BLOCKBUSTER *EXCITING FURNITURE STYLES & VALUES JOIN THE CROWDS — ENJOY THE SAVINGS SUPER "GRAND OPENING" BUYS IN EVERY DEPARTMENT 730 EXCITING ROOM SETTINGS FULLY ACCESSORIZED. Here, we like to have a few handy patio and cherry tomato plants, as well. The north side of the house receives a little early morn- ing sun in summer. Since this is the front of the house, it presents an ideal setting for many lovely shade -loving flowers_ Here we . hand our fuchsia baskets, above a long planter filled with large - flowered tuberous begonias. Below them we place a long planter of impatiens the flaming scarlet blitz or the new doubles. , To this collection we add a tree fuchsia and a tub of small camellia -flowered floribunda begonias beside the front door. This year; since we have begin sorting out"' the front yard into lawn and fruit trees in place of•the original native trees and natural under- growth, we also shall have 'space for pots ,,of coleus, browallia (amethyst flow-, er), calceolaria (pouch or slipper plant) or mimulus (monkey flower), beside the new lawn's edge in partial shade. Baskets of ivy geraniums enjoy their summer site hanging on the sunny side of the house, while baskets of Alaska nasturtiums, with their white -and -green foliage and full range of nasturtium colors, enjoy the light shade , of a lattice arbor. 113LVM £OHS sal HNY-19 Boa :0G•ZA - THE ORIGINAL WORD MAZE PUZZLE BLANK AU WORDS TO BE CONSTRUCTED PERTAIN TO THE ABOVE TOPIC.
