The Women's Missionary, Society met last week at the home of Mrs. Bill Purdon, owing to the illness of Mrs. Alan Falconer. The leaders were Mrs. Bill Rintoul and Mrs. Neil Rintoul and there was an attendance of seven. Mrs. Rod Lamb was presented with a going -away gift as the Lambs are this year completing their third year and are now going to Nova Scotia. Mrs. George. Tiffin of Lucknow is visiting with Mrs. Robert Mowbray and Mrs. Wesley Tiffin. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Montgomery of Blyth visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Angus Falconer. Miss Karen Beecroft of Kitchener spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Beecroft. Sunday visitors at the same home were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Hertel of Kitchener and their grandchildren, Scott and Cassie of Kitchener, Ronald Beecroft and Heather- of Wingham. At the 4-H . Achievement Night at Teeswater, Mrs. Archie Purdon was presented with her 10 -year certificate as a leader. Miss Karen Elliott received an award for completing six projects, a beautiful trillium pin. Community shower is held for bride-to-be BRUSSELS—A com- munity bridal shower for .,Dianne Stephenson was held recently at the Brussels United Church with a large crowd in attendance. Several items were on the entertainment agenda: Mary Bryans played the. piano, Bonnie and Joyce Jacklin sang; Corrina Stephenson played a piano solo; Karla King gave her prize-winning speech and a mock wedding was per- formed, as was an "egg - selling" skit by Michelle Blake and Cheryl Ryan. Donna White , read the address before Miss Stephenson was presented with many beautiful gifts. A delicious lunch was served by Donelda Pearson, Delores. Mrs. White held a bridesmaids' shower at Dawn White's for Miss Stephenson and may gifts were received. Quilt is displayed at UCW meeting BELMORE — The McIn- tosh-Belmore United Church Women met last Wednesday evening. On display at the meeting was the Bruce Pres- byterial UCW quilt, made for the 1984 plowing match. Everyone thanked Norma Inglis for her efforts in bring- ing the quilt to the meeting. The president, Mrs. Eileen Johann, opened the meeting with an Easter reading. Mrs. Alice Mawhinney conducted the devotions, the theme being "Easter", as well as prayer, hymns, scripture and reading. The guest speaker was 'Mrs: Magwood of Hanover; the vice president of the Bruce UCW Presbyterial. All the members enjoyed her talk and visit. The roll call was answered by naming a woman from the Bible and a verse. The business , portion of the meeting was conducted by Mrs. Johann. Volunteers honored at ceremony BRUSSELS—Three local ladies were honored by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Culture April 15 at a presentation of volunteer service awards. Mrs. Hazel Matheson, Mrs. Evelyn Kennedy and Mrs. Sheila Richards received award pins at the ceremony held in the ballroom at the Wayser Terrace Hotel in Kitchener. Guests attending the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Max. Watts, Mrs. Peggy Cudmoreand Mrs. Doug Richards. A reception followed. Institute annual meeting starts with pot -luck meal BELMORE—The annual meeting of the Women's Institute was held recently and began with a pot -luck dinner. Some members were absent to attend the funeral of the late Jennie Jeffray, a former resident of Turn - berry Township who lived to be 101. April is busy at Callander BRUSSELS — The resi- dents of Callander Nursing Home decorated Easter eggs on April 4. The Good Friday service the next day was con- ducted by Mrs. Elizabeth Jamieson and Mrs. Bev Car- diff. The residents and staff had an Easter bonnet parade April 6, while the Easter Day service April 7 was spon- sored by the United Church with Donald Dunbar on the pla�no. Fifteen Cub members joined the residents April 9 to play bingo. Gordon Grant celebrated his birthday April 11 and his wife Murra brought him a birthday cake and four red roses. Rev. Swan of the Walton United Church had the service April 14. The Cran- brook Women's Institute had the birthday party April 16, honoring Mr. Grant and John Thynne. "Caravan Clothes" made its bi-annual visit April 17. A total of 10 lawn chairs were purchased with grocery store tapes saved by the resident council and others in the community. Now that the warm weather has arrived there have been more residents going for strolls around the block. The winner of the Institute quilt at the recent maple syrup festival was Mrs. Vern Inglis, Formosa. The hoop picture went to Mrs. Earl Toner of Gorrie. The district annual will be held May 21 at the Tiverton Community Centre. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and approved. The con- veners' reports were •read and accepted. The Institute had 18 members in the 1984- 85 year. The slate of officers for the upcoming year is as follows: president, Mrs. K. Dickson; vice president, Mrs. D. MacAdam; secretary - treasurer, Mrs. J. Dickson; district director, Mrs. S. Hays; public relations of- ficer, Mrs. H. Bos; pianist, Mrs. W. Johann; curator, Mrs. N. Newans; assistant curators, Mrs. G. Weir, Mrs. D. Eadie; nominating committee, Mrs. D. Eadie, Mrs. S. Hays; Cheerio of- ficers, Mrs. Newans, Mrs, D. Eadie, Mrs. A. Jeffray, Mrs. J. Dickson, Mrs. A. Darling; and auditors, MrS. J. Rutherford, Miss M. Johann. The committee conveners will remain the same as last year. Pot Tuck supper precedes meeting The United Church Women of the Wingham United Church met Tuesday, April 16, and enjoyed a delicious evening meal. Mrs. Ken Wood led a singsong. M1 s. Mary Divok of Clinton spoke on "What Is Your Color?". She demonstrated the different colors on Mrs. Paul McNally. Mrs. Wayne Elston showed the ladies various wags of tying scarves. Mrs. Lynn Kuehl entertained, singing two numbers. The Easter theme was used when the Monday evening unit conducted a short worship service led by Mrs. Sinclair Wardrop and Mrs. Gary Chapman. Mr, and Mrs. Ken Ferguson of Guelph spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson. Mrs. Doug Aitchison and Mrs. Russell Sewers of Wingham visited Thursday at the same home and Mr. and Mrs. George Nickel of Teeswater also called at the Ferguson home. Mr, and Mrs.. William A. Smith spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Jack McElvanney and Mr. and Mrs. Angus Smith of London. A number attended the Open House at Geri -Care, Harriston, on the occasion of Mrs. Janet Harding's 90th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Haskins attended the reception for Rev. George Sach's 80th birthday in London on Saturday and also were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ross King of Stratford. Mrs. Bennett hosts meeting of the Guild GORRIE—St. Stephen's Anglican Church Ladies' Guild met recently at the home of Mrs. William Bennett. President Mrs. Jasper Farrish opened the meeting with the Guild Prayer. Rev. Henry Jen- nings led the members in prayer, then read a devotional passage entitled "Swans at Easter" and a short humorous piece called "An Ough to Spring". The roll call, a recipe, was answered by 15 members. Mrs. Clayton Ruppel gave the treasurer's report. The Ladies' Guild will have a lunch table at Hugh Jarvis' auction on Saturday. It was also decided to hold roast beef luncheons on May 2 and May 30. Mr. Jennings closed the business portion of the meeting with Grace. A display of calligraphy was presented by Mrs. William Gray and Mrs. Marvin Bosetti. Luncheon was served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Bruce Bennett.
