Microwave
Magic
t
By Desiree Vivea
The word dill is said to
have come from the old
Saxon word "dillan,"
meaning "to lull." It &ems
that the reeds off the plant
were once played as pipes to
soothe restless children to
sleep. ,
Whether or not this is the
true origin of the word,
you're not likely to be lulled
to sleep by today's recipes.
And you'll have a "dilly" of a
time preparing them, since
they're all microwave quick
and easy.
The bright green, fernlike
dill plant is easily grown at
home, and. ensures a good
supply of fresh dill (which
can be difficult to find in the
market). Instead, you'll find
the dried leaves (dill weed)
and the seeds of the plant —
both . of which are used in'
cooking.
Dill seeds are best known
Dil Iicious
as the main flavoring agent
in dill pickles. The flavor of
the seeds is more pungent
than that of the leaves, which
tend to enhance rather than
dominate a dish. ,
A favorite seasoning of
Scandinavian cuisines,
sprigs of fresh dill often are
used to garnish 'open -face
sandwiches, vegetable
dishes and casseroles.

Angles call for
,small print
By Barbara Hartung
Q. We remodeled our home
recently and we hope to
furnish one of the upstairs
roomsas a guest room.
Because there are many
angles and nooks, we are not
certain how to decorate the.
room to avoid calling at-
tention to these peculiarities.
The room is fairly small and
has a limited amount of na-
tural light.
Any suggestions would be
appreciated.—W.C.B.
A. Wallpapering a room
with lots of irregularities
always is a. good strategy if
th0 paper is a small print.
arse a paper that hasa
companion fabric in that you`d''4
can. fashion a bedspread and
draperies that would blend
with the walls and ceiling if
you choose to paper that, too.
If you wish to introduce a
bit more decorating drama
you might select two coor-
dinated wall coverings and
do the lower portions 'of the
walls in one and the upper in
another:, However, one solid
fabric Wi11 be more effective
in concealing the odd angles
of your room.
And don't forget to add
some artificial lighting —
either a chandelier or bed-
side table lamps or both.
Q. 1 ain moving into a con-
dominium and want to
-furnish my new home •with
lots, of light colors. I like
warmer . tones better than
cooler ones.
What color should I use for
the walls? Also, 1 need some-
thing at the windows,
although privacy is not an
issue. Can you'give me some'-,
ideas for a chair or two and a
sofa:
The floors are a polished
wood in a light tone.—T.B.
A. Why not a pale rosy pink
for the walls? Then a slightly
deeperrose would be pretty
'on a .sofa and a rose, blue,
pink and green print .on a
pair of chairs would add
more colorand design.
Since privacy is not a con-
cern, treat your windows to a
frothy. .white . gauzy drapery
to soften the room.
Q. We have a long and un-
interesting hallway in our
home. I'd like to do some-
thing to make this area more
attractive but I really am at
a loss. Please give me a
-suggestion.—T.N.
A. Dull, long halls can
become terrific galleries —
filled with all sorts of art that
is, appealing to you and your
family. It needn't be great
artwork — in fact, the more
personal, the better. For ex-
ample, children's creations
are a possibility as well as
blow-ups of your favorite
travel photographs.
Provide your walls with
permanent displaying
facilities by installing
lengths of wood doweling
that have been split and
milled' to create a notch to
support the artwork, which
needs to be mounted on tack -
board or some other stiff
material.
Paint the doweling the
color of your wall. This way
it is easy to add and subtract
from your gallery and there
never are any tell-tale nail
holes. Add some recessed
ceiling lights so the gallery
walls can be washed in light.
