Curlers r BRUSSELS — A highlight of the annual Brussels Curling Club banquet and dance April 6th at the arena, was a decision to donate $4,000 to the Recreation Committee.. The donation will help pay for repairing the compressor and paving the parking lot at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. President of the Ladies Curling Club, Nora Stephenson, assisted by Fran Bremner, presented the Walter Scott Memorial Trophy to the overall winner of,the Tuesday afternoon Ladies' Curling. This was. won by Velma Locking, Ruth Bauer, Karen Uhler and Susan Bondi. Ron Clarkson and Rob Willie presented the trophies and prizes to winners of the mixed curling. Spec. Olympics The Canadian team fared very well, winning a total of 40 medals --16 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze in 62 events at the third International Winter Special Olympics held at Park City, Utah. Two athletes from this area, Ruth Struthers from Ethel and Ross Hancock from Mount Forest, con- tributed to the total as members of the Ontario team. Miss Struthers won gold medals in both the 300 and 800 -metre speed skating races, while Mr. Hancock won a gold in the 300 -metre race and took fourth place in the 800 metres. Thirty-three athletes from across Canada were among the more than 850 athletes from 15 countries competinge- in the games for the men. tally handicapped. The Ontario team traveled first to Calgary, where the Canadian contingent was formed. NHL star Lanny McDonald, a long-time supporter of the Canadian Special Olympics, was at the airport to greet the athletes and wish them well in Utah. A busy schedule was in store for the team when it arrived, with opening ceremonies followed by four straight days of time trials and competition. The team received ,�a tremendous amount of support, including a film crew from CTV to document its achievements. Media and sports celebrities from around the world joined together to `make the games a tremendous success. Dance marks end of curling season trophies for each of the team members, but was unable to attend as he is once again visiting friends in Holland. The new curling executive was announced and mem- bers look forward to a summer break before returning next fall for another curling season. The annual dinner and dance held to mark the end of the curling season and the start of the golf season was held last Saturday evening at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. A good turnout of curlers and golfers was reported. A short financial report was read for the curling season and the draw winners an- nounced. The June Casemore Memorial Trophy was awarded to the overall winning team of the third mixed draw.
