Fire board ..
Continued from Front Page
"It looks like we have tE
buy a new pumper and wt.
have no money in the
budget," said Mr. Miler.
Wingham Clerk -Treasurer
Byron Adams asked, "What
happens if one municipality
refuses to' pay (its share)?"
"It's up to the board to
decide what to do," replired-
IGIr. Miller. "One municipal-•
ity can't hold up the board."
Finally after some further
discussion board members
decided to give approval -in -
principle to the purchase of a
1969 to 1974 pumper for the
Gorrie satellite station when
that station is operational.
Mr. Crothers said his
department is "first in line"
for a used pumper from a
city fire department when
one becomes available.
"What happens if we buy a
pumper and the Howick fire
hall doesn't go?" asked Mr.
McBurney. -
Mr. Crothers assured him
it would not be difficult to
resell. the pumper.

in Howick has made.
(The Concerned Citizens
group has voiced opposition
to the proposed satellite
station in Gorrie and has
circulated a petition.)
Mr. Vincent said he un-
derstands there are -three
schools of thought in
Howick: those who want to
preserve -the- status- quo; -
those who want the satellite
station and those who want
the township to have its own
fire department.
"That's three out of about
3,000," said John Jacques of
Howick.
"A lot of people there (in
Howick) are upset because
we (Howick council) spent"a
lot of money here at the
Wingham fire hall. They say
they're not objecting to a
station in Gorrie, but they
don't want it to cost any
_"
Fire protection is not a
new concern in Howick, said
Mr. Stafford, adding it has
been an issue since he first
went on council in the early
1970s.
"I have been led to believe
the petition contains
falsehoods, misstatements
and figures tossed around
that are out of line," said Mr.
Crump.
"Why doesn't (Howick)
council make a public
statement regarding the true
figures?" he suggested.
Mr. Stafford replied his
council has not finalized its
1985 budget yet and he
cannot give out any figures
at this time.
In other business the board
will call public tenders for
the new emergency van, to
be opened at the May
meeting.
The' board also will order
15 coats, 15 pairs of boots and
15 pairs 6f gloves for
firefighters . in Howick and •
Wingham. Mr. Crothers
reported that at a recent fire
in Gorrie the men who have
been training for the Gorrie
department were out
assisting the Wingham
firemen in their street
clothes. The chief said he
feels they should have
proper clothing' if they are
going to be helping out at
fires.
