Blood donor clinic
best attended ever
High school students and
residents of the Wingham
area responded to a need for
blood in a way they never
have before at last Wed-
nesday's clinic at the F. E.
Madill Secondary School by
donating almost twice the
amount of blood ever
collected locally.
Noreen Gnay, a spokes-
man for the Ladies' Auxili-
ary to the Wingham and Dis-
trict Hospital, reported that
people were responding to
the desperate need for blood
generated by a breakdown at
a Toronto blood bank last
weekend which meant the
loss of many units of blood.
Mrs. Gnay had high praise
for the high school students
who turned out in full force
at the afternoon session. A
lot of adults turned out to
give blood for the first time
as well, she reported,
something which is con-
sidered unusual.
A total of 189 units of blood
was collected at the af-
ternoon session and 115 in the
evening for a grand total of
304. She noted only 169 units
were collected all day at last
year's clinic.
Along with the Toronto
blood shortage, Mrs. Gnay
also chalks up some of the
success of this year's clinic
to the Wingham Kinsmen
Club and particularly Bob
Hewines for a good job of
advertisingt, the event. The
students' council from the
high school also cooperated
with the auxiliary to make
this year's clinic the best
ever. •
Middlesex farmers
to fight Hydro. corridor.
Farmers in East Williams
Township, Middlesex
County, have joined their
fellows in Huron by forming
a committee to oppose
Ontario Hydro's proposed
500 -Kilovolt transmission
line from the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development to
London.
Committee Chairman
Gerald Rose of RR 1, Ailsa
Craig, said over 130 people
turned out to last Monday
evening's meeting in the
Beechwood Hall and a total
of $5,000 has been raised for
the group's "war chest".
These funds will be used to
hire professionals to aid the
farmers in their fight against
Hydro and the proposed
corridor which will cross
East Williams Township, as
well as "some of the best
farmland in Ontario," ae-t
cording to Mr. Rose.
The biggest concern
among East Williams far-
, mers (mostly cash croppers)
is how the line will devalue
farmland when farmers
come to sell, he said.
Other townships in the
south end of the Hydro study
route, such as Lobo and
London, also have formed
committees to fight the
proposal.
The committee formed in
East Williams last week is to
act as a liason between town-
ship residents and their
central action committee.
