A closing thought is in salute to all our dedicated volunteers as Volunteers' Week is corning up: "A helping hand often does more good than either words or money could." The Wingham Advance-Times,,Apr. 10, 1985—Page 5 Winghamcouncil shorts Town council has agreed to donate $700 to the Wingham Horticultural Society this year for planting trees, in Wingham. Roy Bennett, who attended the meeting together with, Gordon Baxter on behalf of the horticultural society, told council this is less than half the $1,500 requested for tree planting last year since the society is in good shapeirom the sale of memberships and also received a cheque from the local Optimist club. The trees are intended to replace those taken down each year bythe, town. 0-0-0 - Council has agreed to advertise for members to sit on the board of the Wingham Museum, as well as volun- teers to help keep the museum open. Deputy Reeve Patricia Bailey' told council last week that unless new people can be found, the museummay have to remain closed this summer. Many of the veteran members of the board and volunteers have resigned because they have served for many years, she explained, and it is time to find some new blood. 0-0-0 Town council plans to meet next Tuesday night with members of the Wingham Business Association to discuss the group's request for removal of the parking meters along the main street. The meeting is set for 8 p.m. on April 16. In the meantime council has deleted the meter revenue and cut back on the revenue from parking tickets in its 1985 budget in apparent anticipation that the meters will go. Parks board asks township for loan The Wroxeter Parks Board has asked Howick Township Council to lend it $8500. Membeils of the board, Gord Kaster and George Hamilton attended the April 3 meeting of council to ex- plain their dilemma. The Parks Board owes the bank $8500 but cannot keep up with payments. • "We're getting killed by overdraft payments," said Mr. Kaster. "We wonder if council would pay off the debt and we would pay you back. The catch is we would like to pay you back without interest." He said the interest on the debt was $1500 last year and the board isn't able to pay back much of the principle after paying the interest. Mr. Kaster assured council the board has a few dances planned and it feels confident it can repay council in two years. The debt was incurred when the Parks Board renovated the Wroxeter town hall. "We had a motion in the books to spend $E)00," said Mr. Hamilton, `but,,they didn't stop until they had $14,000 spent. "The way I see it, if you're in debt, you're responsible." he said, "but we're in some trouble here." Mr. Kaster told, council to his knowledge the Wroxeter Parks Board has never asked fora grant before and he said, "We are not asking for a grant. It's just that, as things stand, we're behind even before we start." Howick Township coun- cillors made no commitment at the meeting. Reeve Jack Stafford said council would • have to look at recent auditor's statements on the Wroxeter Parks Board. 1 "We really should see the books before we can make a decision either way," he said. Everyone is invited to attend this special event. Figure skaters Curtis and Mark Moore will be among the next group of local citizens to be honored with Town off Wingham citations. Mayor William Harris said another reception will probably be held this December to present the awards. 0-0-0" A request by 4t1e Wingham Sister City Organization for financial assistance was turned over to the finance and management committee for study. Council received a letter from the group explaining it is trying to revive and build a stronger and more active organization, but needs funding. Wingham's sister city is Standish, Michigan. 0-0-0 The town plans to ask the Wingham and District Hospital to help pay the $12,500• it is expected to cost to run a storm sewer from the new hospital parking lot down to Patrick Street. Council agreed with a request from the public works committee to add the storm sewer to its list of projects budgeted for this year. However Councillor Bruce Machan pointed out that the need for the sewer has been created totally by the new parking lot and said he is "not sure we shouldn't ask the 'hospital to pay some of it." Deputy Reeve Bailey agreed; noting that with its fund-raising the hospital seems to have plenty of money, R. W. Bell OPTOMETRIST Goderich, The Square 524-7861 BUYING API ANNUITY?
