To be honest, I didn't miss
Johnny Carson one bit! I
could never understand why
movielovers had to tolerate.
a ten-minute monologue
from Carson or Hope when
all they really wanted was to
see the winners and watch
for their favorite stars in the
audience. This year's
Academy Awards special
telecast was the best we've
seen in years. Four different
producers got rid of all this
extra riffraff and moved the
show along quickly, to little
over three hours, almost an
hour shorter than last year's
boring production. Other
awards shows would do well
to follow their example.
Acceptance speeches were
limited 'to 45 seconds; in-
troductions were kept short
and sweet; and production
numbers were limited to
presentation of the five
nominated songs (with
fantastic >,dancing by Ann
Reinking and Debbie Allen),
which is really all that
viewer's wish to see.
The big winner of the
evening was "Amadeus",`
the story of composer
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
It was named best picture
and won Oscars for actor F.
Murray Abraham, director
Milos Forman, writer Peter
Shaffer, art directors,
costume designers and those
working on sound and
makeup.
An emotional winner was
Sally Field who claimed her
second Oscar for her per-
formance as the young
widow fighting to save her
late husband's farm in
"Ptaees -in---the Hear -t" -4t-
would have been wonderful if
the Academy had honored
Vanessa Redgrave for not
only her superb work in "The
Bostonians" but her in,
credible talent in everything
she attempts. What a nice
touch of happiness it would
have added to her day in
England where, she was
preparing for her father's
funeral. But Vanessa's
outspoken nature and un-
popular views do not rest
well with a grout, of artists
who do not like to ruffle
feathers.
Another emotional win
was that of Haing Ngor who
took the supporting actor
award for his first film role
in "The KlllinjFields'.-This,
story revolving around the
Cambodian war closely
depicted Ngor's own life and,
more than any acting praise,
he was pleased to win this for
his people. Best supporting
actress was Dame Peggy
Ashcroft who starred in "A
Passage to India", films a
diversion from her usual
career home on the stage.
"The Killing Fields" also
took awards for film editing
and cinematography; "A
Passage to India" was also
cited for original music
score :and Robert Benton
won an Oscar for his original
screenplay of "Places -in the
Heart". Original musical
score won an award for
Prince of '`Purple Rain"
fame; he looked as though he
had just stepped out of a
monastery! Stevie Wonder
won the original song Oscar'
with his "I Just Called to Say
I Love You" from "The
Woman in Red".
Canada claimed an Oscar
for the animated short,
"Charade", produced by Jon
Minnis, and a Canadian was
also on the makeup team
that won for "Amadeus".
Special awards were won by
producer David L. Wolper,
the Jean Hersholt
Humanitarian Award, and
Jimmy Stewart, for 50 years
-of -outstanding. contribution-._
to the film world. A special
award for us was the
gathering in one place of
superstars like Gene Kelly,
Kirk Douglas, Burt Lan-
caster, Cary Grant (how
disgusting to see someone in
his 80s looking that good!)
and Sir Laurence Olivier, a
magnificent performer sadly
bowing to the -indignities of
old age.

Crossroads -Apr. 3, 1985 --('age 13 '
H.GORDON
GREEN
My recent column about
McGillicuddy and the
country store he owned 50
years ago in Kenilworth
brought me some surprising-
ly warm letters - not from
those who remembered Mc- ,
Gillicuddy's store of course, -
but who cherished memories
of one like it.
And I ffeel a 'little sad that
my children and their chil-
dren will never have a•
chance to,visit such a vener-
able institution because
stores like McGillicuddy's
have nearly all gone the way
of the horses which used to
be anchored in front off them.
There are of course still
stores in our country town,
but they are not really
country stores. They are all
so bright today and so very
busy. And for all the fantas-
tic variety of goods now beg-
ging for your dollar, many of
the items which were staples
at McGillicuddy's and his
competitors have long since
passed from the sight of
men. Items such as stove
black, lamp chimneys and
wicks, Aladdin mantles,
harness leather, waterglass
(to winterize eggs), Dan-
delion butter color, Pea -
body's overalls "wear like a
pig's nose", Royal Purple,
guaranteed stock foods,
Radway's regulating pills
(one for a man two for .a.
horse), sago, O'Keefe's stone
ginger, Hire's root beer
extract, surprise soap, gold
soap, P and G soap (6 bars
for 25 cents), Shamrock plug
smoking; blackstrap brown
syrup and coal oil in barrels,
andcheeses you could
sample before a hunk was
cut off for you. ,
"Old cheese you're
hankerin' for Pat? One with
whiskers on? Well hang on
till I go down cellar and un-
chain one for you!"
And the nerve centre of
such an institution was of
course the pot-bellied stove
which, at McGillicuddy's
radiated its Irish welcome
between the merchandise
counter on the right, the cub -
by hole post office on the left
and .with the nail kegs, feed
bags and barrels behind.
Contrary to popular legend
the arguments which erupt-
ed here were not always
about bulls, boars and big
potatoes; the politics of
Richard 'Bonfire' Bennett;
and the hockey of the Toron-
to. Maple Leafs. And one
winter Wednesday I shall al-
ways recall with a smile the
topic under discussion -
there being no women
present - concerned a cer-
tain aspect of female
anatomy.
"Now this here you hear
tell about tliem there
Oriental women bein' built in
a different direction, you
think there's Any truth in
that, Mike?"
And Mike Finucane was
just beginning a story he'd
heard once from a sailor just
back froth Shanghai and
Singapore, when McGil-
licuddy's, warning 'cut him
short.
"Change the subject,
quick, lads! It's Himself
comin' down the road for his
Family Herald! '
`Himself' was Father Kir
by, the priest. Which should
have occasioned no surprise
because the noon train was
long gone, the mail all sorted
and . this was the day the
Family Heralds came.
Father Kirby was a neigh-
borly sort quite capable of
banter, but there was never-
theless a refinement about
him which, when he finally
went out the door, , left a
rather disturbing odour of
sanctity behind. And per-
haps as a sort of atonement
for being so lately titillated
by the alleged talents of the
women of Shanghai, the con-
versation now turned to re-
ligion.
"Wouldn't you wonder
now," Mike said, "just why
it's us Micks and them there
Baptists that does the most
worryin' about hell? Us
that's supposed to have the
best chances of not arrivin'
there? ..."
It was a long discussion
and most uncomfortable.
One full of chains, whips,
brimstone and burning sul-
phur. Of being eternally
chased by imps with red hot
pitchforks.
"Mind you," Mike said,
never seem to hear
Himself preachin' to us
about them there red hot
pitchforks. But he does talk
sometimes about Lazarus
down there with his tongue
bakin', and beggin' for one
lousy drop of water!"
Someone tried to relieve
the squirming by telling the
others about a postcard he
got sent- once from Ireland,
"It was a picture of one devil
chasin' another devil," he
said. "Chasin' him with one
of them there pitchforks you
keep on mentioning! `Just
one 'damned thing after
another' the title said." But
no one laughed right.
Now next to Himself, Mc-
Gillicuddy was probably the
smartest man around, and
because he had been listen-
ing so quietly to all this
fevered discussion, it was in-
evitable .that he should be
asked to contribute.
"Well now," McGillicuddy
began thoughtfully, "I don't
doubt that I'm more of a
skeptic on hell than an auth-
ority, but I can't see the
Good Lord being miserable
enough to permit those red
hot pitchforks and all those
other discouraging things
you've been rehearsing ..
Mind now lads, I do think
there's a hell! Oh yes, it's. in
the . Book all right! Only
there's noteally much
'about its geography and cli-
mate in the Book and I'm
pretty sure it's mostly a
place of ' remorse, that's
all . You know, a place-
where we'll have to just sit
around for a while - like
we're doing right now may-
be - only being made to re-
flect on what damn silly fools
we. were when we were up
here on earth!"
At which point old Matt
Sheehy, who hadn't uttered a
wordall afternoon, picked up .
his Family Herald and head-
ed for the door. "By God
now, McGillicuddy," he said
fervently, "But you do be
takin' an awful load off my
mind today!"
And after the laughter had
evaporated, the .discussion
switched again to those won-
drous women of Shanghai.
