The third period was
scoreless and the game
ended in a 1-1 tie.
In game two versus the
Halton Hobos, the Rockers
again had the better scoring
chances but, for two periods
at least, the scoreboard
claimed it was a 1-1 draw.
Strong converted a pass
from George Skinn to give
Wingham a 1-0lead, but Rick
Osborne pulled Halton to the t
tie after two periods.
In period three Strong
stepped out of the penalty
box and Jim English tipped a
the team to stick to the
strategy, forecheck the
opposition doggedly and the
victory would be assured.
In period one Hanover
checked a Wingham player
off the puck, passed to a
mate and he made' no
mistake in giving the'
Legionnaires a 1,0 lead.
This only drove the
Rockers harder and the hard
work and a little luck paid off
wo minutes later when
Strong, English, Bill Robin-
son, Bill , olton and McKee
buzzed around Finley in the
Naover net. After failing to
spore . on several attempts
the Rockers jumped on the
scoresheet to tie the game at
1-1.
Strong had attempted a
pass over sticks to English in
the clear. Instead he hit the
goalie's back and the disc
dropped into the net. English
and Bill 1'olton'drew assists.
In the second period the
Rockers lept ahead 2-1 when
Ray Walker back -handed a
shot into the upper corner:
Ron Beecroft land Len
Houghton drew assists.
Hanover came back in the
third to knot it at two -all
after regulation time.
In the 10 -minute overtime
period, Wingham took a 3-2
lead when Davies and
English combined on a give -
and -go with Davies bending
the twine. Aitken of Hanover
broke some hearts when he
tied the game again to end
one period of overtime.
Sudden -death overtime
followed and lasted seven
minutes until Chuck Niessen
scored a controversial goal
to ice the victory for
Hanover. The final score was
Hanover 4 and Wingharn 3.
The Rockers were stunned
the loss, but can be proud
a terrific effort against a
ry strong Hanover team.

Wingham came out on top
in a closely -played, tight -

Saturday evening. The
referees seemed to forget

continually ignored the
various fouls.
Skinn opened the scoring
with 4:38 remaining in
period two. He was assisted
by Brown and Ross Davies.
B. Wilson of the Shelburne
Relics pulled them even
early in the third frame
before Davies surprised the
Shelburne goalie with a
rocket into the upper net to
bring the final count to 2-1 in
Wingham's favor.

Tiverton by a 4-2 overtime
loss to Tiverton Monday

The Blues finally, got on the
scoreboard late in the first

by Kaky O'Donoghue. In the
dying seconds of the opening
frame, Dianne Golley tied
the game for Wingham with
assists going to O'Donoghue
and Brenda Christie.
The second and third
periods remained scoreless,
despite many close calls for
the Blues. In the subsequent
overtime period both teams -
played a close -checking,
aggressive game. With 6:19
left in the overtime period,
the Big Red scored what
proved to be the game -

Super X Atoms lose to
Arthur in the playoffs
Arthur captured the
Wellington -Perth Minor
Hockey League cham-
pionship last Friday as the
team defeated the Wingham
Super X Atoms three games
to one in the best three -out
of -five series.
The score of last Friday's
game was not indicative of
the play. The hometown
squad may have lost 6-3, but
the boys played an excellent
game and the score was tied
at three -all midway through
the third period.
Matt Elmslie was called
upon to make many °'ex-
cellent saves in the Wingham
net as Arthur was able to
penetrate the Wingham
defence. Shane Pegg,
Clement Wai and Ivan Skinn
scored for Wingham, with
assists going to Gavin
Hodgins, two, Pegg and
Terry Thynne with one each.
The Arthur team was
presented with the cham-
pionship trophy and
deserves full credit for the
win.
In Wingham's only win of
the series, the boys came out
flying. They were down two
games to none and were
determined not to let Arthur
sweep .tho„--series,,. . 4't4 d.,,
Wingham controlled the
play throughout the match
as the team forechecked well
and did not allow the Arthur
skaters to break out of their
own end. Pegg led the
Wingham attack with a- hat
trick, while Marc Poulin
added the single marker in
the Wingham 4-2 win.
Wingham assists went to
Hodgins with two, Wai, Todd
Harrison and Gord Welch
with singles.
The Super X Atoms con-
cluded the regular season
with a 6-1 win over Iarriston
recently. Wai led the

trick, while Ivan Skinn
added a pair and Pegg had a
singgle. Assists went to

The team finished the
season with 41 wins, 11 losses
and 4 ties. The boys scored

allowing only 123. Congratu-
lations on a superb year.
BANTAM B TEAM WINS--Wingham's Bantam B team
traveled to Clinton last Wednesday evening and came
away with the WOAA crown, winning the best two -out -
of -three series. Coaches Ivan Metcalfe and John Rich-
mond accompanied the boys on the customary ride on
the fire truck when the team returned to Wingham.
