High -flying Teeswater Falcons score 5-3 victory over Royals A young and enthusiastic Teeswater squad proved its earlier victory had been no fluke by defeating the powerful Wingham Royals 5- 3 in a WOAA Intermediate hockey game played at Teeswater Sunday af- ternoon. This was just the second loss of the season for the Royals, both coming at the hands of the Falcons. As during the previous encounter at Teeswater two weeks ago, the Falcons outskated and outworked the Royals and again managed to shut down Wingham's top Phone 357-1630 for 24 hour movie information OUR SPECIAL FREE CHILDREN'S MATINEE SATURDAY DECEMBER 22ND AT 1:30. A power play goal at the 11:40 mark gave Teeswater a 2-0 lead, as Petteplace tallied assisted . by Steve Zettler and Jim LeGrand. The Falcons increased the Howick Juniors take on Arthur, Brussels teams Friday night saw the Arthur Eagles come to Howick to play the Juniors. The first period saw both teams play excellent, hard- hitting- hockey with no goals scored. The second period saw Howick open the scoring halfway through the period with a goal by Greg Douglas after Jeff Fisk had shot from the point. ' Arthur tallied with three before Howick came back with Kyle Reading and Mark Leslie hitting the Spot to end the period again tied. 'In the third period both teams loosened up and after Arthur 'scored in the first minute Howick tallied 53 seconds later on a goal by Leslie with help from Rob Drost. But 59 seconds later Arthur came right back and went ahead again. After Jeff Fisk took a penalty, Arthur moved up by two. While Howick was short- handed, Mike McDougall with Drost brought the team to within one. This seemed to spark Howick as Drost hit the spot 57 seconds later after Leslie had done some hard work in the corner. Not until there were just three minutes left did Arthur put in the win. r, after which they tried to in- timidate Howick players. Before the game ended both teams had players removed from the game. Howick vs. Brussels Sunday saw Howick bring up five Midgets to help bolster the team. Howick opened the scoring on a goal by Dan Hill, who kept pounding away at the side of the net. Brussels' McArter got their only goal after taking a pass from Kevin Dietner. In the second period Kyle Reading scored after some hard work by Dave Harding and McDougall. Tykes triumph ih 16-0 shutout over Blyth The Wingham Optimist • ' Tykes hosted Blyth last Saturday in what proved to be a high -scoring, f it - skating match. Wingham bent the ine early in the first perio .with an end-to-end rush from Wingham's Brett Sangster to. score unassisted. The first line teamed up again with just over three' minutes left in the first to score a goal. Sangster got credit for the goal and Mark Gibson assisted. Wingham scored once more to prove the period wasn't yet over with just over one minute left when Peter Shaw pushed the puck forward to Peter Gusso who slammed it in behind the goaltender. Wingham came out flying in the second with a picture - perfect goal. A brisk shot by Ryan Leibold from the cornet` allowed Gibson to tip the puck in precisely to the amazement of fans and' players. Even the big boys have trouble doing it that The Winghatn Bridge Club met last Thursday evening above the fire hall. Placing first were Elaine Colvin and Harley Crawford, Mary Caslick Ind Mary Lloyd were second, Ruth Currie and Bert Mathers, third, and Kay Forgie and W. H. French, fourth. well. The Blyth team picked up in the second period, holding the Wingham team to one goal. Two minutes into the third period the first line chalked up another marker when Sangster scored, assisted by Leibold and Gibson. The day wasn't over for the boys, as Sangster scored again, assisted by Gibson and Neil Mowbray: TYKE TIPS—Travis Baier, Jeremy . Brown, Jamie MacKay, Chad Creeden, Jason Evans, Shaw and Mowbray played a well - executed defensive game to keep Blyth's high -scoring number 16 off the score- board. Wingharn's third line of Gusso, Steven Anger and Jeremy Creeden played well together, putting a marker on the board. Shawn Gedcke continues to play a strong game between the pipes, earning his first shutout of the season. Well done! Optimist Tykes lose 7-6 to arch -rivals Last Friday evening the Wingham Optimist Tykes lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Brussels in a high -scoring, evenly -matched hockey game. Wingham shot out in front with an early two -goal lead. Brett Sangster scored, unassisted, to put Wingham on the board. Four seconds later Wingham added its second marker, scored by Travis Baier and assisted by Neil Mowbray. Brussels came back with two quick goals to tie the game. Then Wingham took the lead once more with a goal scored by Sangster, once again unassisted. However before the end of the period Brussels had scored twice to take the lead at the end of the first period. The Wingham Advance -Times, Dec. 19, 1984—Page 13 PeeWee B team bows to Mitverton The Milverton PeeWees went on a scoring rampage at the expense of the host Wingham Minor Hockey k,,RReWees last Saturday, registering a 15-2 victory. The visitors jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first period, poured in six more in the second period and added seven in the third to com- plete the rout. Both Wingham goals were scored in the third period by Peter Poulin, assisted by Todd Chadwick on the first and Michael Elmslie on the second. Chris Strickert led the attack for Milverton with a hat trick. Peter Zehr had a pair, as did Shawn Spenler and Jason Gallant. Mark Wickhorst joined Anesh Bodasing on the in- jury list for Wingham, requiring 12 stitches to close a gash on his forearm. Anesh is out with a fractured elbow. The team hopes both players will soon recover. The Minor Hockey PeeWees face Drayton Wednesday at. Drayton and then play a return game at Wingham on Saturday at 5 margin to 4-1 in the second period as they scored twice while holding the Royals off the scoreboard. Zettler scored at 7:26, assisted by John Louther and Terry Davidson, and Cerson's power play marker from Petteplace and Eadie a minute and a half later gave the host club a three -goal bulge going into the third period. That goal, which went into the net off a player's skate, -riled up some of the Royals and led to a couple doing time for trying to help the referee make his calls. Brent Day, who had been in the penalty box when the goal was scored, was sent back for another 10 minutes for his comments to the referee when Sandy Fitzgerald was sent off for elbowing five minutes later, while Fitz- gerald's words of wisdom from the penalty box won him an early trip to the showers •with a game misconduct when the referee failed to find them humorous. The second period saw Wingham tie the game with the only goal of the period. Sangster gets credit for that marker. The third period saw Wingham take the lead with 10 minutes left to play. The goal was scored by Sangster. Then Brussels scored again only to have Sangster reply five minutes later with his fifth goal of the game, assisted by Jason Moody and Ryan Leibold. But it wasn't over yet as Brussels scored two unanswered goals to end the game at 7-6 in their favor. TYKE TIPS—This Wingham team was not the same team that played Brussels on Dec. 1, as a more aggressive style has proved them to be the equals of their arch -rivals, Brussels. p.m. The team thanks Wayne Wai and the Great China House for the delicious Chinese buffet Monday evening. The Christmas party was capped off at Manager Dale Heibein's house with a movie and refreshments. Coach Brian Elmslie and Manager Dale Heibein wish all players, parents and fans a Merry Christmas. Atoms lose to Lucknow The only game the Howick Atoms played last week was a loss to Lucknow on Sunday evening by a score of 3-2. This was the first loss for Howick in league play this season. Lucknow built up a 3-0 lead in the game and Howick never quite recovered. Great credit must go to Lucknow goalie Adam Shillen, who made many sensational saves throughout the game. Phillip Livermore and John Tritten were the only shooters to beat Shillen. Thanks for being such dear customers. We're The teams played scoreless hockey for nearly. 15 minutes of the third period before the Royals took ad- vantage of a five-minute major penalty forr boarding to Teeswater's Rick Schiestel to narrow the• gap. to 4-2. Dave Burns got the goal, with assists from Mac- Laurin and Brian Ten Pas. Hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed, however•, as Kelly's shorthanded goal less than a minute later, K, assisted by Cerson, restored the three -goal spread. The Royals got the final goal of the game, with Stephenson scoring from MacLaurin with 1:15 left on the clock to make the final score 5-3. The Falcons were full value for the win. They have a good, fast, young team and play "hungry". Their pickup players from Walkerton, Steve Zettler, Terry Davidson, John Louther and Dan Davidson, are all a big help to them. Louther, Terry Davidson and Zettler used to play for the Mildmay Monarchs in the OHA against the Royals. Goalie Dave Gamble wasn't busy, but made good saves when needed to keep his team on top. MacLaurin, Stephenson, Burns and Irwin all played a good game for the Royals. Although the Falcons got two goals in six opportunities on the power play, none of the scores came against the Royals' top penalty -killing tandem of MacLaurin and Stephenson. Unfortunately the duo of Randy Clarke and Rick MacLennan, who also kill penalties very ef- fectively for Wingham, was not available for this game. Forward Brian Ten Pas (shoulder) and defenceman Ken Higgins (knee) were injured in the game, but hopefully will be ready for Sunday's match at Lucknow. However defenceman Mike Watson will be out for four weeks with a shoulder injury suffered during the previous game at Teeswater. Next action for the Royals comes at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday when they travel to Lucknow to take on the Lancers. The next home game will be Dec. 28 when Drayton comes to town for an 8:30 p.m. start.
