PeeWee streak ends
with Toss to Teeswater
The Wingham Legion Pee-
Wees played three games
during the past week and did
not manage a win. However
in two of the three games
they certainly played well
enough to win and should not
be discouraged by the
results.
Clinton 4, Wingham 3
A very determined Clinton
team traveled to Wingham
last Tuesday and handed the
over -confident host club a 4-3
loss.
Earlier this year Wingham
had trounced Clinton 12-1,
but in this game Clinton
played well with only two
lines and simply out -hustled
Wingham. Coach Brown was
extremely disappointed with
the lack of effort exhibited
by his players.
The first two periods saw
Clinton outscore Wingham
by a count of 4-3; the third
period was scoreless.
The Clinton squad is back
to its chippy brand of hockey
and also the intimidation.
This is unfortunate since
they are capable of playing a
much better brand of
hockey.
David McKee led the local
team with two goals. Assists
went to Robbie MacKay with
two, Scott Neil, Jason
Bloemberg and Todd
Chadwick.
Howick 1, Wingham 0
The high -flying Howick
PeeWees, boasting a record
of 17 wins and one loss, were
in town last Friday evening.
Both teams played an ex-
cellent game of hockey and
deserve credit for a very
exciting match.
The only Marker of the
game came midway through
the first period off the stick
of a Wingham player. Had it
not been for the excellent
goaltending of Bill McGrath,
the score could easily have
been greater. McGrath
continues to improve with
each outing.
Mane who missed the
encounter between these two
well -coached teams should
come out and see the
disciplined brand of hockey
both are capable off playing.
Wingham thanks Howick for
•the exhibition game and
wishes them well for the
remainder off what appears
to be a very rewarding
season ahead. The local boys
anxiously await a return
match.
Wingham 6, Walkerton 6
The Legion PeeWees in-
vited the Walkerton
PeeWees, who play in the B
group to the north, to town
last Saturday. Coach Brown
tried some differentline
combinations which ap-
peared to prove successful.
Walkerton has a well -
ba lanced club which skates
hard both ways and by the
end of the first period it held
a 2-1 lead. At the end of the
second the visitors led 4-3.
Early in the third, they
jumped into a 6-3 lead, but
Wingham scored three times
to tie the game at six.
The Wingham boys
deserve a lot f credit as they
refused to quit and as a
result came out of a very
close game with a tie. The
line of Jeff anis David McKee
and Scott Neil and that of
Rob Harrison, Rob MacKay
and Steve Michie showed a
great deal of determigation
and effort. Mike Elmslie
played well on defence, as
did Don Heinmiller, Jason
Bloemberg and Tim Currie.
Andrew Mann and Bill
McGrath shared the
goaltending and were kept
busy as the defence had
difficulty clearing the puck
in front of the net on several
occasions.
The PeeWees thank
Branch 180 of the Royal
Canadian Legion for the.
Christmas party and wish all
a -Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year.

RICK SCRIMGEOUR side-stepped a check by Dave Turner at the blueline, faked a
shot and then skated in and flipped a high shot over the goalie's shoulder on a nice in-
dividual effort while the Ironmen were shorthanded in the third period. By that time,
however, the game was already out of reach as the Ironmen fell 9-4 to Port Elgin on
Sunday.
Victory proves elusive
for Wingham PeeWees
A determined group of
Teeswater PeeWees ended
-Howick's 18 -game unbeaten
streak last Monday evening
with a hard-fought 4-3 win at
Teeswater.
Teeswater built up a 2-1
lead after one period of play.
Jason Jacobson assisted by
Oliver Tritten and John
Greig had the Howick
scoring play. Howick's
Steven MacGregor tied the
score with a beautiful pass
from Steven Gibson to even
the count after two periods".
Howick's only goal of the
third period -came off the
stick of Gibson, with an
assist. from Robbie Van.Den
Broek.
Goalies at both ends of the
arena played exceptionally
well throughout the evening.
Howick pulled the goalie
with a minute remaining in
the game but missed on two
excellent chances to even the
score.
On Thursday evening the
PeeWees, traveled to
Mildmay for a league game.
Peter Stewart and Mark
Fraser combined to earn
their fifth shutout of the
season as Howick won the
game 6-0.
The team was led by Steve
Gibson's hat trick and one
assist. Donald Livermore
played a steady game• on
defence and added some
offensive power with a goal
and two assjsts. Jason
Douglas and Van Den Broek
had single goals. Jaret

on good passing plays,
The Howick PeeWees and
Wingham Legion PeeWees
put on an excellent display of
hardworking hockey' last
Friday evening at Wingham.
Players 'on both sides dis-;
played a strong forechecking
game with some excellent
backchecking.
Both teams missed
numerous scoring chances
on some fine passing plays:"
A goal by Van Den ,Broek
from Gibson in the first
period stood up for the entire
game, resulting in a 1-0
victory for Howick.
Some excellent penalty
killing by Howick in the final
period helped Peter Stewart
and Mark Fraser earn their
sixth shutout of the season.
On Sunday evening
Howick defeated a strong
PeeWee team from Tiverton
by a score of 6-1. The team
was led by left winger
Gibson who had a hat trick
and two assists.
Steve deserves special
mention, as one of his goals
was his 50th of the season.
Congratulations.

sence of MacGregor, scored'
two goals. Tritten scored the

Rockers record a win,
a loss and two draws
By Fraser Strong
In their last four games,
the Wingham Oldtimers
Rockers have played even
hockey: defeating Hensall,
losing to Seaforth and tying
Hanover and Seaforth.
A close match was played
at the Blyth arena Sunday
afternoon when the Rockers
hosted Hanover. Wingham
led throughout most of the
game, but allowed Hanover
to score a late goal to tie the
game at 3-3.
Wingham jumped into an
early lead in period one when
Fraser Strong blocked a shot
at his own blueline, traveled
the length of the ice on a
breakaway and then had to
rap in his own rebound as he
was stopped on the initial
shot.
Again i'n the first, the line
of George Skinn, Bill Tolton
and, Strong hemmed
Hanover into its own end. A
shot by Tolton appeared to
enter the net immediately
behind the post, then
Pre -Tykes win
at tournament
A team from Wingham
won all three of its games at
a pre -Tyke tournament held
on the weekend at the
Teeswater arena. The
tournament included teams
from Tiverton, Ripley,
Teeswater and Wingham.
It was played in a round-
robin style, with each team
playing one game against
each of the other teams. The
tournament started at 10
a.m. and finished at 4:30
p.m.
The Wingham team played
its first game ,against
Tiverton. Danny McPherson
was, in goal. The teams
started out evenly, but
Wingham gradually pulled
away to win by a score of 9-5.
Scoring goals for
Wingham were Josh
Johnston with three, Craig
Baynton with. two and Jason
Crawford, Lean Wai, Katie
Elmslie and Joel. Pegg each
with one.
Wingham faced Teeswater
in its second game, with
Baynton in goal this time.
The Teeswatlr team played
to win but was no match for
the Wingham goal -scorers.
The final outcome of the
game was 24-1 in favor of
Wingham. Johnston ac-
counted for nine goals, Pegg
had eight and Crawford six,
with Wai adding a single.
In its third game Wingham
faced Ripley. Jordan
Kuyvenhoven played goal
this time. Again the teams
started evenly, but
Wingham's goal scorers just
outshot Ripley. The final
score was 10-5 for Wingham.
Pegg, Crawford and
Johnston all had hat tricks,
with McPherson adding a
single.
Super X Atoms
have Win and tie .
The Wingham Super X
Atoms had a good week,
defeating Elma-Logan 7-0 in
league play and tying
Listowel 3-3 in an exhibition
game.
Against Listowel on
Friday evening, „the local
squad built up a 3-1 lead only '
to see a determined Listowel
club fight back to gain a tie
late in the third period.
The Wingham boys ap-
peared unprepared to give
that little bit extra and the
defencemen were not
moving the puck from in
front of the net. As a result,
they had to settle for the tie.
Marc Poulin played well
and scored two goals, the
other marker going to
Clement Wai. Assists went to
Hodgins (2), Hunter (2),
Gord Welch and Wai.
Wingham 7, Elma-Logan 0
The following day the boys
came out fired -up and
soundly defeated the host
club. All the boys worked
hard and hustled.
Shane Pegg led the attack
with four goals, with singles
going to Hodgins, Hickey a'nd
Wai. Hodgins and Wai also
earned assists.
Elma-Logan picked up
several minor penalties for
its chippy play and Wingham
capitalized on the op-
portunities.
On Wednesday evening the
boys are being treated to a
Christmas party com-
pliments of Way'ne and Sue
Wai of the Great China
House. The entire team
wishes all its supporters a '
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year,
rebound out. Strong made
sure the referee counted the
goal by slapping it back into
the net.
Hanover scored two
unassisted goals in the
second period to knot the
score at two each.
However Strong won a
face-off early in the third
period in the Hanover end.
He passed to Skinn who
xnade no mistake in banging
home a goal for a 3-2 lead.
Hanover came roaring
back at the nine -minute
mark to score on a
breakaway and make the
final score 3-3.
SEAFORTH 6, WINGHAM 2
Seaforth made a return
visit to Wingham last Thurs-
day evening for a late night
game and trounced the
locals by a 6-2 count.
It seemed the only bodies -
from Wingham that skated
for the complete game were
the father and son refereeing
team of Ed and Terry Deer.
Wingham 'did manage to
get goals from Skinn and
Strong with assists going to
Paul McKee, Tolton with
two, and Sinn.
Seaforth traveled to Blyth
last week to engage the
Rockers 'in aclose contest
th'ended in another 3-3 tie.
Seaforth showed great
stamina while playing short-.
handed, but Wingham was
determined to look good
against some excellent
' players on the "Beavers"
squad.
Wayne Brown opened the
scoring on a bullet drive
from the face-off circle when
he was set up by Ross
Davies. Seafforth came hack
to tie the score with just over
two minutes remaining in
the first period when Ken
Doig sent Murray Henderson
in alone.
Wingham again took a one -
goal lead early in period two
as Skinn converted a pass
from Strong. However less
than one minute later a good
play by Doig enabled
Seaforth's Bedard to notch a
goal and tie the score at two.
,Seaforth took the lead in
the final frame with just
three minutes remaining.
Luckily for the Rockers
though, some dogged fore -
checking by the line of
Davies, John Cullen and
Brown produced results with
only 38 seconds remaining in
the game. Davies converted
passes from Cullen and
Brown to tie the game at 3-3.
Tolton exploded for four
goals Dec. 7 and led the
Rockers to a 6-2 triumph
over their counterparts from
Hensall. Wingham held a 2-1
lead after two periods on
goals by Cullen and Tolton.
The contest was not so
close in the third period as
the Rockers continually
hemmed the Hensall five in
their own end. Tolton added
his "natural" hat trick in the
period, aided by Ken Balzer,
Skinn and Strong who
assisted.
Strong added the Rockers'
sixth goal after a fine display
of passing by Skinn and
Tolton.
