Following the service a luncheon was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stewart. Margaret Dane and Mrs. , Alex Taylor attended the ' figure skatingcarnival at Belmore last Saturday evening. Approximately 40 skaters took part. ' Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ritchie of Saudi Arabia, who were visiting UCW unit members gather at the Bell home GORRIE = The Christmas meeting of Unit Two of the United Church Women was held recently at the home of Mrs. Max Bell, which was beautiful with Christmas decorations and candles to add to the Christmas spirit. Rev. and Mrs. 'S. Bates were present and all enjoyed a potluck dinner. The meeting opened with the singing of "0 Little Town of Bethlehem". Mrs. Cecil Grainger, the president, read the Christmas story from the Book of Luke, followed by a prayer and a carol, "There's a Song -in the Air". The president then in- troduced Mrs. Bates who took the Christmas story for her theme and presented a skit. She was assisted by Mrs. David Dickert, Mrs, Robert Hastie and Mrs. Bell. A discussion followed, after which the roll call, a Christmas poem or .,thought, was given. Mrs. Alex.Taylor closed the worship with a prayer. The minutes were read by Mrs. Bell. Nine meetings were held during 1984 with an average attendance of nine.. Mrs. Dickert gave • the treasurer's report. She said the "givings" were up from 1-983 and $900 was given to the UCW treasurer. Mrs. Dickert asked to be.relieved of the officesand Mrs. Bell accepted the position. All other offices will be -held in 1985 by the same people as this year. An exchange of gifts was enjoyed. Mr. Bates and his wife were presented with .small gifts in appreciation. "Silent. Night" was sung and prayer closed the meeting. The ladies then viewed the articles left over from the bazaar from which ap- proximately .$25 was realized. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Taylor, also attended. Mrs. Ritchie, who a native of Australia an ad never seen a per- formance on ice, ,was thrilled. The Ritchies'-niece, Linda Wilson, was one of the solo performers. Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie left Wednesday for Australia Jo., Yspc1 Christmas with her family., Mr. and Mrs. Melville Beecroft of Otterville spent the weekend at the home of Mr. .and Mrs. Hector Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. George Brown spent a couple of days recently with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mulloy of Paris. Mrs. Gordon Mann un- derwent surgery in the Stratford General Hospital recently. Mr. and Mrs. Den Dekker of Brussels visited last Friday with Mr. and Mrs. 'John Van de Kemp. Congratulations to Norma Haveman and Gera;,d Currah, who were married last Saturday at Knox Presbyterian Church, Atwood. They will reside at Atwood. Everett Cathers of Wroxeter was the winner of a rocking chair in a Lions Club draw held last Saturday at Stone's Restaurant. William Gray of St. Stephen's Anglican Church was the guest speaker at the senior citizens' "Come Alive Club" dinner held last Tuesday. The seniors gathered at St. Stephen's. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Mundell led in the singing of several Christmas carols with Mrs. Sheldon Mann at the organ. Mr. Gray asked the blessing and mentioned several things for which people can be thank- ful. The members the -n en- joyed a bountiful beef dinner with all the trimmings, served by the members of St. Stephen's Guild. Alvin Mundell, vice president of the club, welcomed everyone and thanked the ladies for the dinner they had provided. Jean Sperling read the treasurer's report. It was announced the president had received an invitation for the club members to visit the Huronview Nursing Home at Clinton. Melville Dennis suggested the group accept the invitation for September of next year. Jasper Farrish introduced the guest speaker. Mr. Gray gave an interesting talk about two men. One man was blind and the other crippled. Because of their afflictions, they became beggars and felt that because of their conditions, they could not enjoy Christ'as other people do, or as they 'had in their own childhoods. Mr. Gray explained how. they' found fellowship with each other and found the "Christ" in Christmas., Mrs. Harry King thanked Mrs. G. Moir is hostess for WNis meeting the speaker and then Mrs. Mann called upon Mrs. George Brown for a reading, "That's the Way We Are". Mrs. Mann closed the meeting. Mr. Farrish told about the Lions Club selling "bricks" for the Ronald McDonald House being built in London. It is a place for people to stay near the hospital if they have a child in hospital or un- dergoing cancer, treatment. He also told about turning in Wintario tickets to help the blind. The Lions can get 50 cents per returned ticket to go toward .helping blind people. Mrs. L. Newman honored by family on 80th birthday A family gathering was held Sunday at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club to celebrate Mrs. Lillian Newman's 80th birthday. A buffet dinner was served after which a social time was 'enjoyed by all to ,celebrate the birthday, which actually was Dec. 13. Those attending were: Emily Hendershot of Hamilton, Mrs. Newman's sister; Richard and 'Iva Newman, Mississauga; Bill and Fran Newman, Scott Newman, Sandra and Fred Holliday, Shelley and Mark Coleman, all of Walkerton; Douglas and Jeanne Newman and family of Islington; Marilyn and Don MacDonald, Jim MacDonald and Linda Machan, all of Walton; Bruce MacDonald,. GORRIE — The Women's Missionary Society of. Knox Presbyterian Church, Gorrie, held its December meeting at'the home of Mrs. Gordon Moir. Mrs. James Robinson opened the meeting with a poem, "The Lights of Christmas", and a new carol, "The Complete Story" by Jean Abrams, was sung, followed by prayer. The roll call was answered with a Christmas thought andthe number of shutins visited. Mrs. Harvey Adams and Mrs. Dave Neilson were asked to continue as a nominating committee for',, 1985. .It was decided to subscribe, to Mission Update for the congregation. Mrs. James Patterson then read the' first five verses of the first chapter of St. John's Gospel. Assisted, by Mrs. Glen Underwood, Mrs. Alvin Mundell and Mrs. Moir, she used the Christmas worship service from the November Glad Tidings, with the addition of a responsive reading, "Gloria in Excelsis", and an advent reflection on: "Zechariah. Many favorite carols were sung,• after which Mrs. Patterson led in prayer. During the fellowship hour, gifts were wrapped for the shutins and Mrs. Dave Lockie demonstrated how to make Chrismons, which are Christian . monograms, symbols or signs designed to be used as Christmas tree decorations. A delicious lunch and pleasant con- versation concluded yet another celebration of Christmas. LIONS DONATE MONEY—The Wingham Lions Club donated $3,000 to the building fund at the Wingham and District Hospital at the club's Christmas dinner meeting last Tuesday night. Lions Bob Stewart and Jim Hall made the presentation to Tom Miller, chairman of the fund-raising drive for the new emergency wing at the hospital. The Lions have pledged a total of $10,000 toward the project.
