LAST -SECOND SAVE -Rob Schistad was forced to make his biggest save of the
game in the final seconds Sunday atter a giveaway at the Walkerton blueline sent
Kevin Elliott of the Hawks in on a breakaway. Schistad stood his ground and got a
piece of the puck to preserve a 6-6 tie for the Ironmen, who proved unable to hold a
lead throughout the game.
Eighth Liners edge ahead
in Blyth Broomball League
The Eighth Liners,
defending champions of the
Blyth Broomball League,
have slowly but surely
moved up in the league
standings. After last week's
action the Eighth Liners
moved into fourth place and
are only two and one-half
points out of second spot.
If you are watching this
team for the first time you
will notice it does not play an
exciting brand of broomball
The team sticks to the basics
of the sport and plays a very
defensive game, waiting for
a couple of breaks for their
scoring chances.
Last`Tuesday evening, the
Eighth Liners got single
goals from David Souch,
ArnoI'd Pease, Bill Phelan
and Herb Govier enroute to a
4-0 shutout over the Blyth
Bears. Single assists went to
Irvin Pease, Jim Blake and
Arnold Pease for the win-
ners. •
Last Thursday night the
Eighth Liners battled to a 1-0
overtime tie with the
Lanesville Lords. The Lords
opened the scoring in the
game when Wayne Bell set
up Duke Drennan in the first
period. However the Eighth
Liners managed to tie the
game with about seven
minutes left in the second
frame when Irvin Pease
scored from Peter deJong.
In further action last
Tuesday, Carol Humphries'
unassisted goal five minutes
into the' second period lifted
Brussels to a 1-0 triumph
over the Belgrave Sparlings.
Sandra Morrison played a
strong game in goal for
Brussels, recording her third
shutout.
Single goals by Marg
For.,an and Chris Moore lifted
Auburn to a 2-1 victory over
the Goderich Knight Riders.
Betty Jane Foran and Karen
Souch picked up one assist
each for the winners, while
Jennifer Miltonburg set up
Jackie Van Osch for the
Knight Riders' only goal.

Bandits. Also scoring for the

Forsyth. Wayne Saunders
picked up two assists and
Rick Louthier, Donnie and
Wayne Carter added one
each.

Ritchie.
Jim Van Osch had a goal
and an assist to lead the
Lanesville Lords past the
Auburn Falcons by a score of
3-1. Ian Hackett and Steve
Howard scored one goal each
for the Lords, while Drennan

came when Roy Fisher set
up Elwyn Brindley.

goals by Rose Weber and
Donna Fischer as Lucknow
defeated Auburn 2-0. The
shutout was Sheila Hunter's
seventh in seven games this
season.
Rob McIntosh, Doug
Cousins and Greg Hum-
phries scored one goal each
as the Maitland Dirt Riders
recorded a 3-1 victory over
the Clinton Warriors. Jerry
Bremner and Kevin Pen-

PeeWeescome close at
London -area tournament
The Wingham .PeeWees
narrowly missed winning the
consolation championship at
the -fifth annual Byron
Optimists' PeeWee-Bantam
tournament in London last
weekend, losing 3-2 to
Mooretown (Sarnia) in the
final game.
Wingham opened the
tournament Saturday.
against the 'Byron Mays
team. Wingham opened the
scoring on a goal by Michael
Elmslie from Chris Heibein.
Captain Todd Chadwick's
goal made it 2-0 before Brad
Arthur of Myron Mays closed
the scoring in the first period
with a goal in the final
minute.
The only scoring in the
second wa's a goal by
Anthony Verbeek of Byron
Mays to tie the score 2-2.
With 1:25 to play in the
third period, Tom Ippolito
scored for Byron Mays from
Andrew Gilliland to win the
game.
It was a hard-fought
contest in which all the
Wingham boys played ex-
ceptionally well, especially
Trevor Elmslie in thee.
Wingham net who turned out
what was undoubtedly his
best effort so far this year to
consistently stop the Byron
Mays shooters.
This set the stage for
Game 2 at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
Coaches, players and
parents either stayed
overnight in the London area
or traveled beck down.
' In this game, •Wingham
faced the second team en-
tered from Byron. Jason
Stratton opened the scoring
unassisted and Neil Gregson
.,,tallied to close the scoring at
the end of the first period
with Byron leading 2-0.
The Wingham boys
regrouped and scored three
unanswered goals: Anesh
Bodasing from Chris
Heibein, Peter Poulin from
Todd Chadwick and Michael
Elmslie unassisted.
Halfway through the third
period, the local boys ran
into three penalties back-to-
back and Byron scored twice
to regain the lead.
With less than three
minutes to play in the game,
Chadwick scored unassisted
to tie the score and Bodasing
scored the go-ahead goal
with 29 seconds to play.
Michael Elmslie potted an
insurance marker with four
seconds left on the clock,
unassisted.
Although most of the
Wingham goals were
unassisted through great
individual efforts, the team
played well with its passes
connecting and Mark Wick -
horst, Jason Balzer, Sean
Whiteley and Jake
Richardson as well as goalie
Trevor Elmslie all playing a
solid game.
Following two great
games, one a loss and one a
win, the Wingham Pee Wees
were set for the consolation
championship, with parents,
coaches and fans all hoping
for another fine effort. The
boys did not disappoint
anyone and the game was a
great confidence -builder for
them.
The first period against
Mooretown was scoreless. At
the 54 -second mark of the
second period, Bodasing
scored a beauty from
Heibein and less than three
minutes later Poulin dented
the twine from Chadwick
and Michael Elmslie.
The score stayed 2-0 until
the last minute of the second
period when Craig McKenzie
scored for Mooretown.
There was no scoring in
the third period until the
final minute when, with 53
seconds left in the game,
Tony Carlton came in all
alone with no defenders and
beat Trevor Elmslie to tie
the score.
The local boys let down a
little after that and 'seven
seconds later Ryan Sarson
put it away for the Sarnia-
area team. The last 44
Streak snapped at nine
as Falcons edge Royals
seconds were played with the.
Wingham net empty, but the
local boys were unable to tie
it up.
The team expressed its
thanks to the Byron
Optimists for allowing it to
enter the tournament. It was
a character -builder for the
boys and a great experience.
The next games are this
Saturday at 4 p.m. in
Lucknow and Sunday'at 6:30
p.m. in Wingham against
Elma-Logan.
Hickey leads
Crawfords to
7-2 victory
The high -flying Wingham
Royals had their streak
snapped at nine games with
a 5-4 loss to the Teeswater
Falcons on Sunday af-
ternoon. It was the first loss
of the season for the Royals,
who were 7-0-2 in their first
nine games of the WOAA
Intermediate schedule.
The Falcons, who had lost
7-3 to the Royals in a
previous meeting at
Wingham Nov. 2, got a sweet
revenge at home on.Sunday,
striking for four goals in a
seven -minute span of the
second period to reverse a 4-
1 deficit and then holding
onto the lead through a
scoreless third period.
Penalty killing, which had
been a strong suit for the
Royals through earlier
games this season, faltered
in this match. Teeswater
scored twice on the power
play during the second -
period flurry and then got
the winning goal just two
seconds after another
penalty had expired and
before the penalized skater
had a chance to get back into
the play.
The Falcons drew first
blood in the game with a goal
by ex -Ironman. Jim LeGrand
two and a half minutes into
the first period. No One
picked up LeGrand in the
corner and he just walked
out and fired a shot past Ron
Smith in the Royal net.
The lead didn't last long,
however, as Brian Ten Pas,
with an assist from Jay
MacLaurin, found the range
15 seconds later to tie the
score at one -all.
Less than a minute later
the same combination•
clicked again on a power
play to give the Royals a 2-1
lead:
A couple of minutes later it
was 3-1 as MacLaurin and
Ken Higgins set up Randy
Clarke and he put the puck
past .Dave Gamble for the
final goal of the first period.
"Just over two minutes into
the second period the Royals
stretched their lead to 4-1 as
Rick Ma.. L,ennan, back with
the team for his first game
this season, took a pass from
Dave Golley and found the
mark for what was to be the
last • Royal goal of the af-
ternoon.
' Undaunted by the deficit,
Kevin Hickey scored three
'goals to lead Crawfords to a
7-2 pasting of the Stainton
Spitfires last week. Peter
Snow added two goals and
Gordie Marr and Dave
Martin had singles.
Ray Bateman and Todd
• Stainton tallied for Stain-
. tons.
Bridge Motors continues to
win. The team handed the
Advance -Times a 9-3 defeat
last week. Craig Laing, Doug
Purves, Bob Armstrong,
Mike Malihot, Dennis
Thompson and Jim
McCarthy shared goals for
Bridges, while Stan
Stapleton, Kevin Tervit and.
Warren Moore provided the
offence for the Advance -
Times, the team which is
said to be willing to make
trades to try and turn around `
its dismal start this season.
Bridge club
play results
The duplicate bridge club
met last week with the
following results: first,
Yvonne McPherson and Bert
Mathers; second, Margaret
Mundell and Kay Forgie;
third, Mary Mathers and
Harley Crawford; and
fourth, Jean Whitby and Wilf
French.
Teeswater took control of the
game in the second period,
out -hustling the Royals
badly and gradually chip-
ping away at the lead. The
hard work started to pay off
as Terry Davidson's power
play goal from Jim LeGrand
made it 4-2 five minutes into
the period.
A couple of minutes later
Derrick Gamble brought the
Falcons to within one, with
assists from Craig Anderson,
also a former Ironman, and
Robert MacDonald.
MacDonald took ad-
vantage of a roughing
penalty to Royal Sandy
Fitzgerald, who always
plays a spirited' game
against Teeswater, to even
things at four -all two
minutes later, assisted by
Rick Schiestel and Phil
Eadie.
Schiestel got the final goal
of the game, from Dan
Davidson and Anderson, just
after Tom Irwin had
returned to the ice after
serving a two -minute sen-
tence for high -sticking..
Officially Teeswater was
two -for -five on the power
play, while Wingham scored.
once in four chances.
Penalties were close in the
game, with 14 minutes in
minors called against the
Falcons and 16 minutes
against the Royals.
The second period made
the difference, however, as
all three penalties called in
that period went against the
Royals, and Teeswater
turned all three op-
portunities into numbers on
the scoreboard.
Brian O'Connell replaced
Smith in the Wingham net
for the third period and shut
out Teeswater for the rest of
the game, but Wingham was
unable to close the gap. The
Royals pressed hard in the
final five minutes and had a
few chances to tie it, but
either the shot was. just off
the mark or Gamble came
up with the big save.
With the exception of Ten
Pas and MacLaurin,. the
-Falcons managed to shut
down the Royals' big gun-
ners in this game, as neither
Ken Cousins nor Dave
Stephenson got a point.
Cousins continues to lead the
Royals' scoring with 13 goals
and 11 assists for 24 points in
