Brian McIntosh
A native of Listowel
performs with COCE
Brian McIntosh isn't likely
to forget the year of 1984.
And his recollections of it in
the future aren't likely to
have anything to do with
George Orwell, or Big
Brother.
For this native of Listowel,
1984 is the year he realized a
"life-long dream" to be a
member of the Canadian
Opera Company (COC).
Currently Mr. McIntosh, a
bass baritone, is on tour with
the CQC Ensemble,
Canada's only year. round
operatic troupe. He is
singing the role of Colline in
the Puccini opera, "La
Boheme" and the role of
Aaron Blunder in Seymour:
Barab's delightful children's
opera, "The Toy Shop".
The COC's acceptance of
him came quicker . than he
expected, but Brian
McIntosh is no overnight
wonder.
A graduate of the music
faculty of The University of
Western Ontario and the
Nordwestdeutsche Musika-
kademie in Detmold, West
Germany, Mr. McIntosh has
appeared at opera• houses'
and festivals throughout
Europe, including the Essen
Stadt Theatre, the Kiel
Opera and the Helsinki Fes-
tival. He has also served on
the voice faculty of the Uni-
versity ' of Bielefelden in
West Germany.
many.
It was last December when
he and his wife, noted pianist
Karn Shelstead, were back
in Canada visiting relatives
over the Christmas season
that Brian McIntosh
auditioned for the Canadian
Opera Company.
"In February I heard I had
been accepted for a full-time
contract with the COC.It
was a big decision for us. to
leave Germany after living
there for five years. But it
has been a life-long dream of
mine to sing for the COC."
Returning to Canada in
June, Mr. McIntosh started
work with the COC in July.
As a member of ,the COC
Ensemble he participated in
the annual Summer Festival
at Harbourfront. Included in
this summer's COCE
pro ram of shortened operas.

Harbourfront were "La
Boheme", "The Tales of
Hoffman" and "The Merry
Widow".
Mr. McIntosh sang in "La
Boheme" and two roles in
"The Tales of Hoffman". In
September he started
rehearsals for "Cosi Fan
Tutte" which will be per-
formed in the St.' Lawrence
Theatre in Toronto in
February.
During its fall tour of
Southwestern Ontario (Oct.
29 to Dec. 9), the COCE not•
only performs operas in such
places as Midland, Blyth and
Port Dover, but puts on
OperaDemos for elementary
and secondary schools.
Brian McIntosh is one of the
singers presenting the
OperaDemos for elementary
students.
"The children' are very
small, some of them, and
they get so excited .. They
are very impressed and I
hope they will remember it. I
think they will and someday
when they go to see an opera
they will be able to say, 'Now
I understand."'
When the Ensemble:
performs "La Boheme" at a
matinee performance in the
Blyth Centre for the Arts on
Sunday, Nov. 18, and at an
evening performance 'in "
Alumnae Hall in London on
Saturday, Dec. 1, Mr.
McIntosh says, "It will be
like coming home. I hope to
see a lot of people I know
there."
For four performances of
"La Boheme" the COCE will
join forces with Orchestra
London. These per-
formances will be held in
Brantford, Sarnia and
Chatham as well as in
London.
In Blyth and other centres,
"La Boheme" will be
presented with piano ac-
companiment.
"Anyone wanting to hear
the opera with full orchestra
might like to take in the
London performance," Mr.
McIntosh said.
Brian McIntosh is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Blair
McIntosh of Listowel and
first began singing with the
Listowel District Secondary
School Chorus.
