The lower portion of the walls in a narrow hall of our house is taking a beating from youngsters banging the door and wheeling bikes and wagons in and out. We've been thinking of paneling the walls, but we are wondering if it would be a waste of time because of heavy traffic. - Claude M. A. Hardwood paneling, either floor to ceiling or used as wainscoting, is a good choice for heavy -traffic areas. Hardboard, in ad- dition to being inexpensive and easy to install, paints easily and resists dents, scuff marks and abuse and comes in a wide variety of attractive finishes. To use hardboard as wain- scoting, simply cut 4 x 8 sheets in half, and nail through drywall into studs, or glue in place over proper- ly prepared plaster or dry- wall with a special adhesive. Incidentally, a light wood - grain finish for the paneling will make your narrow hall seem wider. Q. 1 am confused over faucet washers. A friend who is a plumber says to use only flat washers, but another plumber who came to do some work at my house says the type of valve seat determines whether a flat or tapered washer should be used. For hot water faucets, still another plumber tells me that hard washers are best but soft washers are recommended by my friend who is a plumber. Can you clear up my confusion? - Frank B.N. A. You can get three kinds of washers for your faucets. Two of them, neoprene and Buna, are made of synthetic rubber and are relatively soft, while the third kind is made of hard fiber. Fiber is the original material used in faucet washers. But fiber washers do not make a seal as com- plete as the synthetic rubber replacements, which were developed after ,World War II. However,_ fiber washers, do not expand when they be- come hot. This feature makes fiber washers excel- lent for use on hot water faucets. A soft neoprene washer on the hot side will keep you for- ouC t,Look10r inset spape sp p4 ?agec dew a ,rus% 2.18/kg FOR ROASTING OR FRYING SUPER SPECIAL McNAIR PIECES OR CHOPPED McNAIR SULTANA RAISINS 9 750 g PKG. The problem is that neoprene washers ex- pand quickly as water rush- ing through the faucet be- comes hotter and hotter. Tapered washers expand even more readily than flat ones, even though the tapered washer will make a tighter seal on an older faucet where the seat is bound to be worn. Buna washers are neither too hard nor too soft, and I would say a flat Buna is your Craft By Louisa Rush Many of you know the joy and satisfaction and the sense of achievement that creating an article of beauty can bring, whether it is knitting, crochet, needle- point or any other one of the crafts which are popular today. The rhythmical move- ments off the needles. while knitting or crocheting has a therapeutic value; tensions of the day seem to slip away, providing a pleasant and re- laxing past time while listen- ing to the radio, riding in a car, train or bus; and even while watching TV if work- ing in plain stocking -stitch or ribbing. No one can lead a busier life than I, yet I find time to knit and crochet; sometimes at very brief moments. I never travel without 'some- thing to do with my hands, and what a blessing this is when trains and planes are not on time, or grounded due to weather. I watch my fellow passengers become more and more frustrated, pacing the floor and watching the clock, while I sit back, relax and knit with' the satisfaction of knowing that the time is being put to good use, and not completely lost and wasted.. Plan your knitting and citbchet projects carefully. If you are going on a three- week vacation, or lucky enough to spend the entire summer at the cottage, do take along some craft work. A best bet on most hot water lines. Neoprene, tapered or flat, is fine on the cold side. I hope all of this doesn't just add to your confusion. Q. Our refrigerator was in storage for about three months. The rubber on the inside of the door is dis- colored from mold. Can any- thing be done to remedy this situation? -Carl J.S. FLORIDA CEDED Florida 'was ceded to the United States by Spain on Feb. 22, 1819. Talk Three glorious weeks with nothing to do may sound wonderful, but before long you will be wishing you had brought something along. It's best not to plan large or bulky items if you are travelling unless it is an afghan which can be knitted in squares or strips; or a crochet tablecloth or bed- spread made from crochet motifs. 0 0 0 Now that the weather has cooled down a bit, your chil- dren would love these sleeveless pullovers to wear under a windbreaker and to wear while in school or at home. The Decline & Stumbling of Social Credit Government in British Columbia 1979-83. By Stan Persky. New Star Books, Van couver, 272 pp. Paper $3.95. Reviewed by PERCY MADDUX William Andrew Cecil Bennett (1900-1979) held the office of premier of British Columbia for 20 unbroken years, from 1952 to 1972, when he was toppled by the New Democratic Party leader David Barrett, who was foolish enough to call an election only three years later. Being leader of the op- position after having been premier '"for 20 years was more than W. A. C. Bennett could take and he retired, running his second son, William Richards Bennett, in his safe riding. Bennett II was immediately chosen leader of the Social Credit Party and so he became premier after only two years in the legislature. As there were no daily papers in pub- lication in British Colum- bia's largest city in 1979 when Bennett called an election hurriedly just before ACROSS 1.
