The Wingham Advance -'fires, Nov. 7, 1984—Page 13 Royals stretch string to four by owning Teswater, Lucknow NO CHANCE AT ALL—Ron Smith in the Royal net lost control of the puck and it dropped right onto the stick of D. Davidson, allowing Teeswater to grab a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first period Friday night. Smith, who on occasion would have had grounds to sue for non-support, turned in a solid game as the Royals overcame a flat first period to post a 7-3 victory. Rockers fail to advance at `Old Yeovils' tourney By Fraser Strong The Wingham Rockers traveled to Durham last weekend to compete in the Hanover "Old Yeovils" oldtimers' hockey tour- nament. Living up to its name as one of the finest oldtimers' tourneys in On- tario, the action featured three clays of hockey com- bining three groups with eight teams each. The Rockers met a determined' group from Palmerston in their first game played at 8 last Saturday morning. Both teams needed a full period just to pry their eyes open, shake the "fuzzies" and find their skating legs. The second period saw., more action as Palmerston's Donald registered two unassisted tallies for his team. Wingham responded with one goal off the blade of Fraser. Strong when Jim English set him up from the left wing. John Cullen, assisted'" by Ross Davies, drilled home a shot mid -way through the third period to knot the game at two goals each and set up the possibility of a tie at the end of regulation time. However with only ttvo minutes left in the game Tim Tolton picked up an errant pass at the blueline, rushed into Palmerston's end around the net and laid a pass onto the stick of English, all the while holding off a checking defenceman. English made no mistake as he rifled a shot by the goalie's glove hand to ice the victory. This may have been the cleanest game of theftourney as but one penalty was called in the entire match. The victory was costly to the Rockers since goalie Barry Ireland suffered an, injury to his knee with four minutes remaining in the game. Although in obvious pain, Ireland insisted on finishing the remaining action. Game two, also played last Saturday, saw Wingham, take , on a well-balanced squad from St. Clements. Although the Rockers held a territorial advantage for Most'' or tire' The, they hgd difficulty finishing off their plays for 'goals. John Fryfogle put Wingham into a 1-0 lead with 1:33 remaining in period one. After stealing the puck deep in the St. Clements' end, Fryfogle rounded the net, LYCEUM TILITIVNI Phone 3671630 for 24 hour movie Information PLAYING FROM FRIDAY TO THURSDAY NOVEMBER 9TH TO 15TH. English was set up by Paul McKee in the early going of the second period to give Wingham a 2-0 lead. This was shortlived however as St. Clements scored two goals before the end of the period to tie the match. Period three saw Dietrick of St. Clements register the. only goal to allow his team to hand Wingham its first loss of the tournament. The Rockers entered game three needing a win to ad- vance to the semi-finals. Although they played their best game of the year, Wingham still could not find the scoring touch and went down to defeat and elimination from the tour- nament at the hands of the Eureka (Windsor) Blades. English managed to get the only tally for Wingham with an assist going to Strong, making the score at game's end 2-1 for Windsor. Optimist Atoms lose two matches The Wingham Optimist Atoms opened their regular season .last Saturday in Mitchell, but lost 3-0 to the home squad after three exciting periods of hockey. Wingham had numerous scoring chances, but could not beat the Mitchell goaltender. Wingham's goalie, Andrew Gibson, played very well in a losing cause. The Atoms went on the road again Sunday for an exhibition game against ,Howick. The Howick team won the game 5-1 with Phillip Livermore scoring three times. Wingham's only goal was scored by Murray MacLeod since, once again, Wingham ran into hot goaltending. However Gibson and Mat- thew Elmslie also provided Wingham with some ex- cellent goaltending. The next game for the Optimist Atoms is at home this Saturday afternoon against Clinton at 3:30. 1104004bili001111itiAig••1•i1•i-•if•1.1.:i••t,eI1•i1•i4•if.t111Ii1i•i••1'••••t•••,•••tl 1•1 ..,,. 11, GODERICH • 524-7111 TNI SQUARE WED. - THURS. The wilts came at the expense of two traditional rivals, Teeswater and Lucknow, with the Royals downing Teeswater 7-3 at the Wingham arena Friday right in a game which was closer than the final score would indicate and then posting a 6-4 victory over the Lancers in a penalty -filled match at Lucknow on Sunday. A pair of major penalties in the third period, one for fighting and the other for high -sticking, cost Lucknow the game, as Wingham capitalized with two power- play goals to provide the winning margin. Brian Ten Pas, who together with linemate Ken Cousins has sparkled for the Royals this season, had another good night, scoring twice, with Cousins drawing an assist on his second goal. Ten Pas left the game midway through the third period after being high- sticked in the face by Lucknow . Captain Jim Murray, but returned to score the insurance goal. Jay MacLaurin and Ken Higgins also were injured during the chippy match, • • • • • • • • • • • • • 0 • • 0 0 0 0 0 to •' • 0 • which saw the two teams assessed a total of 70 minutes in penalties. Lucknow, took 36 minutes, including two majors, while Wingham was close behind with 34 minutes, all minors. The Royals, who have shown a habit of starting slowly, got off the mark quickly in this game, jum- ping into a 3-0 lead by the end of the, first period. Ten Pas put the puck behind Ray Guay in the Lancer net with just over six minutes gone in the period, assisted by MacLaurin and Randy Clarke. Four minutes later Clarke found the mark, with assists from Len Stamper and Bob Alton. Dave Golley rounded out scoring in the first period at the 13:41 mark, assisted by Mike Watson. The Lancers struck back in the second, Grant Gilchrist scoring at 2:33 to narrow the gap, assisted by Don Elliott and Brad Humphrey. Steve Simpson's goal ata 13:45 made it 3-2, before Royal 'Captain Dave Stephenson tallied, with assists from Golley and Watson, less than a minute later. The teams went into the dressing rooms after two periods with Wingham leading 4-2. However Lucknow again struck quickly in the third period, Gilchrist scoring his second goal of the game at 1:24 and Simpson getting his second at 4:48 to close the gap. The score remained tied until the 13:12 mark when, with Murray in the box for high -sticking, the Royals scored two goals 31 seconds apart to snatch the victory. MacLaurin scored the winner, assisted by Stephenson, with Ten Pas and Cousins teaming up for the insurance marker. Wingham 7, Teeswater 3 Playing at home on Friday night, the Royals came up flat and had their hands full against a Teeswater team which also sputtered and had trouble getting going on all eight cylinders. Despite the lopsided final margin, Wingham held a slim 4-3 lead midway through the final period as it had trouble generating a consistent offenc 'f: nd oc- casionally broke down in its own zone. However its brief offensive flurries in the second and third periods proved sufficient for the win. The teams played a scoreless first period until the final minute when Teeswater took advantage of a defensive collapse by the Royals to take a 1-0 lead. D. Davidson scored the goal, picking up a rebound and flipping it past Ron Smith, who looked like the target in a shooting gallery as he found himself completely deserted by his teammates. The Royals finally got Super X Atoms win two and tie one to open season the regular schedule and proved to be a much more determined group than during its first meeting with Wingham. After two periods the score was 2-0 in Wingham's favor, but in the tjyrd period the Wingham players were caught out of position on several occasions and PaltYiersCon'tie'd`tlie get we': Matt Elmslie played a superb game in goal, time after time stopping breakaways. Ivan Skinn scored and assisted and Poulin added'a single in the 2-2 match. Wingham traveled to Listowel last Saturday to play an exhibition game. The boys played much better positional hockey and came away with a 5-2 victory. Pegg and Hodgins led the team with a pair of goals and an assist each. Poulin also scored a single and Bradley Hunter added an assist. Todd Harrison and Gord Welch were impressive as they showed a great deal of hustle and determination. Jason Hickey and Terry Thynne played well on defence. This season the boys will play in the Perth -Wellington Minor Hockey League against Palmerston, Listo- wel, Milverton and Elma-Lo- gan. The coach is Al Harri- son and the other parents will be assistingwith the team. The boys hope to be wearing their new sweaters soon, sponsored by Super X Drugs. The next home game is this Friday evening at 6:30 against the Listowel Reds. The Super X Atom Hockey Club, under the umbrella of the Wingham Minor Hockey Association, is off to a flying start. Thus far in two exhibition games and one regular season game, they have won two and tied one. In their first game of the season, the boys played Palmerston in exhibition hockey and completely dominated the play in an.11-2 rout. Shane Pegg led the attack with five goals and one assist, while Gavin Hodgins scored two and assisted on two others. Clement Wai added two goals and two assists and Marc Poulin scored once and assisted on one goal. All the boys put forth a. ,lrc! k n 1Qus_effort.... _ .. _ Palmerston returned last. Friday evening to play Wingham in the first game of Howick Juniors lose two games in past week The Howick Juniors traveled to Markdale last Friday evening and came away with a 6-5 loss. Howick picked up its first goal when Mark McDougall hit the twine, assisted by Greg Douglas and Dave Harding. However Markdale came back with three unanswered goals. The second period saw Howick open up the action with a goal by Scott Norman, assisted by Dan Hill and Darren Foerter. Markdale tallied only once this period. Third -period action saw Markdale get the first goal, but Howick came back with two. Mark McDougall picked up his second marker, assisted by Doerter and Mike McDougall. Markdale came back less than one minute later to take a two -goal lead, but Jeff Fisk made it close for Howick after taking a pass from Rob Drost and Hill to end the game at 6-5 for Markdale. Howick met Brussels at home Sunday afternoon and was humiliated by a 10-3 score. Brussels opened the game with two goals before Howick's Fisk drove one from the point after Harding put the puck back to him. With only 20 seconds remaining in the first, Brussels tallied again after Douglas had scored for Howick, tipping in a pass from McDougall and Kyle Reading. Brussels opened the second period early, but Howick's Mark McDougall made it closer after a pass from Douglas. That was it as Brussels scored three more times in the second and three more times in the third with no replies from Howick. Howick's next two games are on the road, traveling to Markdale on Sunday and Arthur next Friday. back on even terms at 12:13 of the second period when Jay MacLaurin's power -play goal from Randy Clarke and Ken Cousins made it 1-1. , A minute and a half lager they took the lead as Brian Ten Pas hooked up with Cousins and Brent Day and, less than a minute later, it was 3-1 for Wingham as Day scored from Len Stamper. Mike Watson's goal early in the third period made it 4-1 for Wingham and the Royals appeared to have Teeswater on the ropes. However the red -shirts fought back with two goals within a minute and a half to make it 4-3. D. Leslie got the first, from Kent Cerson and Clint Petteplace, and Davidson got the second from M. Walters on a power play. b With 8:58 left in the game, Ten Pas and Cousins went to work again, this time with Cousins scoring the goal to make it 5-3. Bob Alton also drew an assist on the first goal. The Royals will face Monkton at the Wingham arena this Friday night, with game time 8:30. They then go on the road for games against Ripley Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and St. Clements Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. before returning home to take on the Lancers Nov. 23 at 8:30 p.m: Legion PeeWees off to a good start The Wingham Legion Pee- Wees are off to a good start under coaches Bill Brown, Don Edgar and Rudy Bloemberg. Last Friday evening the boys hosted Mount Forest in an exhibition game. Coach Brown said he was very pleased with the 8-1 outcome, in Wingham's favor, and added a fine effort was put forward by the players, as every player on the team figured in the scoring. Jeff McKee paced the attack on a pair of gaols, while David McKee, Don Heinmiller, Rob Harrison, Mike Elmslie, Jason Bloemberg and Rob MacKay added singles. Assists went out to Steve Michie, Elmslie and Tim Currie with two, MacKay and Scott Neil with four assists each. The Wingham defensive attack completely dominat- ed throughout the match and Michie, David McKee, Bloemberg and Currie stood up on the blueline and thwarted ---several--- good Mount Forest attempts. The defensive and of- fensive skills, particularly the passing, are a strong point of this club and the upcoming season looks promising. Wingham 7, Port. Elgin 7 Port Elgin came to town last Saturday and caught the Wingham squad sleeping to score three goals in the first period. The outcome did not look promising, but the local boys scored near the end of first and took the lead by scoring three quick goals in less than four minutes during the second period to take the lead. . Port Elgin responded with three more goals of its own in less than two minutes to regain the lead. After two periods the score was 7-6 in Port Elgin's favor. Both teams settled down to a more disciplined brand of hockey in the third and WHERE DID HE COME FROM?—It took the Wingham Royals half the game to get their offence untracked Friday night, but when they finally scored it was on a pretty play as Ken Cousins In the corner spotted Jay MacLaurin heading for the corner of the net and put the puck right onto his stick for the tying goal midway through the se- cond period. Wingham went on to win 7-3 over Teeswater. Michie, the team captain, scored the equalizer mid- way through the third. Harrison paced the scoring with a pair of goals and singles went to Michie, Jeff McKee, Heinmiller, Elmslie and MacKay. Assists went to Heinmiller, Elmslie and Neil with two each and Michie, Jeff McKee and Harrison each had single assists. Andrew Mann played extremely well in net in the second half of the game. The team is entered in the WOAA this year and will play against Seaforth, Mitchell and Clinton. The boys' home opener is Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Clinton.
