I have an old cabinet- maker's abinetmaker's bench in my home .hobby shop that has a frame assembled with lag screws. in alie mpting to tighten the screw. 1 stripped the three* Several times. 1 can- t<' not, convvnl eptly use larger screws. s there a way to make the old holes smaller? —Fred E. O, A. -One way is to back the screws out and place a fair amount of quick -setting glue — any white glue — in the holes, spreading it as uni- formly as possible on the walls fo the holes. When the glue has set initially but bas not fully hardened, turn the screws back in, seating each lightly. After the glue has set and cured, tighten the screws moderately. Ordin- arily, screws retightened this way will hold secure. Q. Can regular latex house paint be used on stucco and concrete? — Sam H. F. A. Most types of latex ex- terior paints are excellent for use on stucco and con- crete surfaces. Just read the directions for each brand of paint thoroughly. Note that when working in dry, hot weather, you may have to dampen the surface with wa- ter before applying the paint to keep the paint from drying too fast. Q. I need to refinish the outside of my house. Since re -stuccoing is too ex- pensive, I am going to paint it. 1 have a good air com- pressor and spray gun. What I would like to know is what type of paint I should use and what I need to do to prepare the walls.—William C.A. A. Re -stuccoing should not be necessary if the stucco is in good condition. For painting, first be sure that the surface is clean. Also, cracks and inden- tations should be filled, and the surface otherwise intact. If color is to be added, use only limeproof cement color sold by dealers in masonry materials and add no more than 10 pounds of color to each bag of portland cement. All ingredients should be mixed thoroughly when dry, before water is added. To determine the amount of color needed for your par- ticular purpose, make a few small trial batches before mixing the full batch for the tuck pointing. Q. The glass door of my shower gets a white film buildup from our water over a period of 'time 'despite our water filter. What is an easy method to remove this film and how can the buildup be further minimized? Is there something like a silicon - based wax that would slow it down or make cleaning easier? — Neil McG., Bonita, Calif. _ A. This is caused by the al- kali in the water in your area. I suggest you try scrubbing the glass surface with hot white vinegar. There is also a product on the market (one trade name is Lime -Away) available at most supermarkets. A water softener unit would help remedy this con- dition. Q. I am interested in find- ing someone who re -silvers mirrors. Could you put me in touch with someone? — Cecil A. S., New London, Minn. A. This column is carried in many places throughout the nation, so I am not able to recommend mirror re -sil- vering specialists in your area or other areas. I sug- gest you Check the Yellow Pages in the telephone direc- tory for companies or stores Wash away oil and grease. Remove dirt and other loose materials with a wire brush. If there is a white saltlike material adhering to the stucco, it is probably/ ef- florescence. This is caused by moisture that dissolves salts in the interior of alkaline materials and carries them to the surface. ,, ,,,:i ;iflorescence must be v d , store repainting by bushing. Do not wet or more crystals may appear. Painting seals the masonry surface and will help prevent efflorescence and damp walls. Selecting the right -quality paint is important. Remem- ber, stucco is quite alkaline and alkali is not a friend of many paints: Alkaline - resistant paints include latex paint designed for use on masonry and stucco, also solvent -thinned rubber -base paint. Be sure and follow the instructions on the paint ' container carefully. Q. You gave instructions on how to clean marble in a recent column. You men- tioned using a. water wax after cleaning and sealing the surface. I cannot find anyone who has heard of water wax. Where is it available? Also, is terrazzo sealer suitable for use on bricks?— Mrs.J.D.P. A. All supermarkets carry water-based wax. One brand name is Trewax Gold Label, a self -polishing sealer and wax. There are also waxes especially made of marble, which should be available at market dealers. As for water-based wax, there are certain types of floors such ,as asphalt tiles that require this type of wax for cleaning. Terrazzo sealer is a good preservative finish for brick. Q. One of my awnings developed several leaks. Now, before I put it up again, I would like to make it leak- , proof. Is there anything I can put on the awning?—Arthur M. A. Dissolve a pound of shaved paraffin in a gallon of benzine — remembering the possible fire hazard and taking full precautions. Spread the awning flat and taut as possible, and cover it with the solution. This will fill up all leaks very effect- ively. For me, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas with- out a tree, Tinsel, lights, the whole works. Thanksgiving without a turkey? Fat chance. And Hallowe'en without pumpkins? The two are firmly associated in my mind- by what the philos- opher Hume called a "con- stant conjunction" (meaning that they always appear together). If love and marriage go to- gether like a horse and car- riage, Hallowe'en and pump- kins are just as strongly link- ed in this punkin' head. What do most of us do with our rounded orange friends come Hallow,e'en? We carve them up info grinning jack- o'-lanterns, stick a candle inside so that their tops shrivel and blacken and leave them for the trashman on Nov. 1. Don't get me wrong. I love a creatively carved pumpkin face, and the wonderfully Hallowe'eny fragrance of melting candle wax and singed squash. But I love the flavor of pumpkin, too, and on this holiday we seem to forget that the squash is edible, as well as just plain fun. Why wait for Thanks- giving to bake up a pumpkin pie? Hallowe'en is the per- fect night to microwave a quick pumpkin treat for your favorite trickster. This seasonal squash is really quite versatile in the kitchen. Even the seeds. can SCREEN CLEAN-UP Clean the filter screen on a kitchen exhaust fan fre- quently, says Home and Family Management Spe- cialist Jean Riddell of the On Ontario Ministry of Agricul- ture and Food's rural organ- izations and services branch. The grease that collects can damage the fan and duct- work and could eventually cause a fire. Wash the screen in hot, soapy water. Use a brush to clean the mesh thor- oughly. Roasted pump- kin seeds are a regular snack in Mexico, where they're known as "pepitas" (see recipe following). And fresh cooked pumpkin may be served as you would any squash. When buying fresh pump- kin for cooking, choose one that is heavy for its size, and with a hard, unblemished rind. Smaller pumpkins will have more tender flesh, and are less likely to be stringy.
