The Wingham Advance-Times, 1984-10-24, Page 14and -Canada have been best
when we had a Democratic
administration in the White
House and a Liberal in 24
Sussex Drive. It will be in-
teresting to see whether a
Republican administration
in Washington and a
Progressive Conservative
government in Canada
produce the same kind of
bonhomie. I'm not counting
on it.
For one thing, it hasn't
been tried in recent memory.
Unless my history. fails me,
the last time nominal con-
servatives were in power in
both countries simultaneous-
ly was during the Eisen-
hower-Diefenbaker period,
and before that, Hoover -
Bennett,
I don't recall that all U.S.-
Canadian differences
vanished in those periods, al-
though I'm told that Mr.
Diefenbaker and General
Eisenhower were more than
civil to each other. But it
seems to me than President
Reagan and Prime Minister
Mulroney have more pro-
blems to solve than can
reasonably be taken care of,
by large doses of inherited
blarney.
Despite all the talk of freer
trade, we are still different
countries. The . common
border may be undefended,
but it still stands for some-
thing. No two people are
closer, perhaps, than Amer-
icans and Canadians, but our
collective thinking is still
quite different on a number
of pretty serious matters.
1 don't think there is any
doubt that Brian Mulroney
will be able to establish a
closer personal relationship
with Ronald Reagan than
Pierre Trudeau ever could.
But even if they become good
friends, they're going to find
that there is hell of a lot t4
argue about.

attending every day. It was a
tremendous education to see
so many people from all over
the county working together
in many ways on such a
large undertaking, plus
knowing about the years of
planning, etc. beforehand.
The average person attends
such a function without
realizing how much time and
effort is given to make it a

Roving feeding better
for pregnant cows
What's the best time to '
feed Pregnant cows? For
three years scientists stud-
ied over 800• heifers of all
breeds daring the entire
calving season. Half were
fed between 8 and 9 a.m. and
'half between 8 and p.m.
Those fed in the evening
had 17, percent more day-
time births than the others.
Daytime births make it easi-
er for pregnant cows to get
assistance from farm or
ranch hands in case of hard
deliveries.

Dear Editor:
This is a belated letter
to thank you most sincerely
for printing the article
about Amnesty Internation-
al, Group 80, in your news-
paper.
We were hoping to be able
to report that our prisoner,
Ruth Desta was released.
Unfortunately in the general
amnesty that -the Ethiopian
Government granted in mid
September, Ruth was not in-
cluded. Our Group will have
to work harder than ever
now to try to procure her
freedom.
Publication of Amnesty
work does help us spread the
word about our endeavours
an we are thankful to you
our help.
This week happens to be
Prisoner of Conscience week
using the theme "Women.
Silenced". Group 80 has a
'prison' located on Main
STreet in Palmerston where
local prominent women and
Group members are taking
turns being imprisoned: This
is ,just one more effort to
heighten public awareness of
people around the world who
do not enjoy freedom of
speech such as we do in Can-
ada.
Thankyou for your assist-
ance and we look forward to
working with you in the
future.

Much has been made of the
fact that the two men who
lead Canada and the United
States are of Irish descent.
But the suggestion that a
common Irish background is
a firm foundation for friend-
ship is like saying that two
barrack -room lawyers are
likely to make great drinking
buddies. I wouldn't bet on it.
The important thing is that
one of them is an American
and the other is a Canadian.
One is a super -nationalist,
and the other is a Canadian.
One is a Republican, and the
other is a Canadian.
Much is Made of the fact
that traditionally, relations
