The 90 -minute special, adapted from the Jacques Beyderwellen stage presen- tation, dramatizes the theatrical greatness and stormy life of the extrava- gant actress whose re- nowned career spanned more than 60 years (from 1862 to 1923) and reached across three continents. As the Divine Sarah, Quebec singer -actress Monique Leyrac recalls and recreates many memorable moments from Bernhardt's tempestuous life. Included is her fascination with death and dying — particularly her childhood pleading with her mother for a rosewood coffin so that she can imagine what she would look like as a corpse; her desire at 16 to be a nun; her first introduction to the famous Comedie Francaise; and her host of love affairs and notorious off-stage adventures which, more often than not, horrified the French the- atrical establishment. Ms. Leyrac also illustrates Bern- hardt's tenaetiy, courage and passion plus her wonder- ful theatrical ability to seduce an audience.
