Again, Kitchener's Centre
in the Square echoed to the
rafters with the magnificent
clear tone` of Nana
Mouskouri asshe performed
in five concerts last week in
one of the finest theatres in
southwestern Ontario.
Mouskouri, a native of
Greece, is probably the most
popular international per-
former in the world. For two
hours, she does nothing but
stand on a stage and sing, yet
audiences cheer her, woo
her, give her flowers and
afford her standing ovations.
It is her marvellous voice
that impresses music lovers
around the world. She can
belt out a popular rock tune
with the best, then the
theatre hushes and she
begins a soft ballad, the
clear tones and sweetness of
her voice ringing through the
building like a crystal bell,
making love to the audience.
At the end of her two
hours, she is singing as
sweetly as when she began.
Though one sensed a
huskiness in some of her
lower notes, the clarity off
her high notes was as sharp
as in her first song. Trained
in classic voice in Greece,
she went on to study jazz and
then fell into pop music. But
the classics still entice, as
shown by the aria from
"Norina", specially arrang-
ed for her, which she sang at
Kitchener. She speaks, and
singsin, five languages and
has won more international
awards than one could count.
She tours a large part of
with her own
every year
band, seven young men who
come from Greece, France,
England and Italy, and play
several different instru-
ments as they back her
various moods in music.
This is Oktoberfest time in
Kitchener, of course, and
this year the Centre in the
Square is presenting one of
the funniest operettas ever
written. "The Grand
Duchess off Gerolstein" was
written by Jacques Of-
fenbach, stars Janet Stubbs
and Martin Chambers and
plays until the 14th.

Though the name will not
mean much to movie fans of
today, the nail a of Walter
Pidgeon evokes many
pleasant memories for
yesteryear's moviegoer for
the fine hours of en-
tertainment he provided. His
death last week at 87 made
many people remember,
especially the movies of
wartime and the drama and
emotion of "Mrs. Miniver
in which he starred with
Greer Garson. There was
hardly a family that this
movie did not touch, for
there was hardly a family
that war did not touch, and it
was not surprising it won the
Academy Award of its day.
There are few roles for
Walter Pidgeon, types in
today's movies, for there are
few movies of the quality he
demanded, in the writers
who created .his roles and in
the performace he delivered.
He represents a movie era
that, unfortunately, is gone
forever.
