The Andromeda Galaxy, the most
distant object visible to the unaided
eye, is well-placed for viewing this
month. It is the nearest galaxy, and
perhaps the largest, in the Local
Group of Galaxies of which the Milky
Way is a member. Recorded sightings
of it date back to 905 A.D. It appeared
on early star maps and Was referred
Io as the "Little Cloud" long before
telescopes were invented.
To find Andromeda, face east and
hold the map vertically with "eastern
horizon" at the bottom. Look high
overhead for the four stars that outline
the "Great. Square of Pegasus °. The
star at the northeastern comer of the
square shaped formation is not in
Pegasus, it is Alpheratz (also Called
Sinah), In Andromeda. Two Iohg
curved Tines of stars stretching toward
the northeast complete the
constellation.
The Andromeda Galaxy is known by
its Messier number M31. The number
is from a list of over a hundred faint
nebulous objects compiled in the ,
1770's by French astronomer Charles
Messier so that he would not confuse
them with cornets. To find M31, scan
just to the north of a line joining
Mrech and Mu Andromeda® for a
faint extended misty patch. It Is es-
sential that the sky be dark and very
clear and desirable that the search be
made from a location where there is
no artificial light 10 create sky glow.

Binoculars help tremendously, and in
a small telescope the galaxy is a
lovely hae
elongated oval with a
brighter ncentration at the centre.
Its dista
n
'rs estimated at 2.2 million
Tight years. (A light year Is 9.460 536
x 1015 meters.) When we look at
A31 we are looking back in time and
we see it as it was over 2 million years
ago It is possible to see this Incredi-
ble distance with the unaided eye
because we are looking at the com-
bined light of about 300 billion stars.
Another nearby galaxy, M33, is a
greater challenge to locate In binocu-
la1;s. 11 belongs to the tiny nearby
constellation Triangulum Smaller and
,only slightly more distant than M31, it
too is one to the Local Group of Gal-

8:00 Movie, "Citizen Kane"
(1941) Often ac-
claimed as the best
film of all time, this
classic has turned out
to be RKO's most
memorable achieve-
ment. Boy wonder
Orson' Welles and his
Mercury Theatre act-
ing crew, including
Joseph Cotten and
Agnes Moorehead,
created this cinematic
tour de force about
power and corruption
in the newspaper busi-
ness.
10:00 Conversations "
10:30 Movie, "Journey into
Fear" (1942). Welles
began directing this
tight little thriller, but
was replaced by RKO.
Despite this, the
wonderfully atmos-
pheric drama still
bears the Welles
touch. Set in Turkey,
it stars Joseph Cotten,
Dolores del Rio, and
Welles himself as a
colonel of the Turkish
secret police.
