Thanksgiving service
held at Knox United
BELGRAVE — Knox
United Church was artistic-
ally decorated for its
Thanksgiving service.
Gourds, fruits and vege-
tables of many varieties and
colors completely covered
the communion table top as
they effectively overflowed
from a large wicker basket.
This display of God's gifts
was complemented by ar-
rangements of dried flowers
and cattails; bronze chry-
santhemums in brass vases
and maple leaves of autumn
hues.
Mrs. George Procter, or-
ganist, and Miss Sheila An-
derson; pianist, played a
prelude of Thanksgiving
numbers.
Rev. John G. Roberts
chose scripture readings
from Genesis 1 and Revela-
tions 21, relating to the
original creation of the world
'land the new creation.,
We must take care of the
perspective in which we hold
the harvest, he said. Don't
consider it,wath.the aspect of
a pagan feast.
In the Genesiscreation the
Spirit of God -moved over the
water; then came light; the
water was set in bounds;
land arose. Water symbo-
lizes disorder. God brought
order and light. Darkness
moved for the light; but the
waters of disorder were still
there.
View our existence and
everything around us. Our
existence is ` marked by
possibility and potential.
Fruits are symbols . of the
possibility for good. The
world is full of the
possibilities of disaster.
The new creation is the tri-
umph of Jesus over the
cross. Disorder in the new
creation is no more. There is
no night there. The
possibility of darkness in the
first creation is gone in the
second creation.
God is the centre of All. He
creates order which runs
through life when all is in
despair.
Our Thanksgiving is a
possibility for all to co-oper-
ate with Christ in freedom
I for everyone. Be specific;
rejoice in our harvest.
The large choir sang. "Be
Thankful to the Lord", with
organ accompaniment.
The minister expressed his
. appreciation for the work of
art in the display ,arranged
,by Mrs.,T>ne Htter,Mrs.
Glenn Coii1tes; Mrs: ,Robert
Grasby`:-. ...,., .
