Q. We're moving into a
small apartmentthat has a
living room, kitchen, bed-
room and bathroom. We will
have to provide dining space
in the living room, which it-
self is not large.
I'd like some ideas for
making the space, partic-
ularly in our living room,
seem as large as possible.
And what sort of furniture
would you buy first? We pare
starting from scratch. —
T.L.
A. I'd select light sherbet -
soft colors for the walls, use
as thin and gauzy a fabric as
possible for the windows and
furnish with multi-purpose
pieces of furniture.
For example, consider a
game table and four chairs
instead of a traditional
dining room suite. You can
use the table and chairs for a
desk, for reading, doing pro-
jects as well as dining.
Use a couple of the game
table chairs in your bedroom
if your living room space is

too limited. Partially up-
holstered chairs function
well as occasional chairs and
are acceptable for everyday
use as well as entertaining.
A medium to small library
table with a couple of chairs,
will give you the same dual
purpose.
A well-designed storage
piece will be functional and
aesthetic in your living room
if your budget will allow.
Choose lightly colored
upholstery fabrics for your
seating to give your an
illusion of spaciousness.
A pair of wing chairsmay
be more suited to your living
room than a sofa. A small
loveseat might be easier to
arrange than a sectional.
Use plenty of mirrors and
don't overlook artificial
lighting. Pretty lamps —
floor models as well as table
designs — provide function
and good looks.
Q. I want to furnish my
lanai .with natural, honey -
toned wicker furniture and
an trying to figure out what
color to use for the uphol-
stery. I want a natural, calm
feeling in the room.
The walls are pale beige,
floor will be a brownish -rose
vinyl tile. There will not be
any draperies at the win-
dows because we have lots of
privacy around our back
garden.
What color or colors would
be prettiest for my chair and
sofa cushions? — M.C.
A. Why don't you consider
either rose or peach? Either
would be great. Keep tosoft,
light tones of whichever you
choose so you will create a
tranquil atmosphere. Too
rich a rose or peach will con-
tradict a calm feeling.
A plain fabric or very
lightly striped would
'probably be better than a
floral or paisley design. You
could add some visual inter-
est with pillows in slightly
deeper or lighter shades of
the fabric, too. Both colors
would blend well with
narutal wicker and the vinyl
you describe.
Did you know that the
largest grower of cactus on
the North American con-
tinent is a 72 -year-old
dynamo who lives in the
town of Dundas? ,
The • grower is Ben
Veldhuis who has acres of
greenhouses on the edge of
town that are packed with
cactus plants.
Ben and his family sell
over three million cacti a
year in twelve hundred vari-
eties. They ship them by land
and sea from Vancouver to
Hong Kong, to Barbados,
and to Europe.
They have cactus plants
with names that would throw
a Latin teacher into a tizzy.
Some are twenty-five feet
high. Others are those squat,
dome -like types that you see
in landscape gardens. Then
there are thousands upon
thousands of little plants
peeking out at you from their
greenhouse beds.
Ben spends about five
months of the year travelling
the world, buying and selling
seeds. He's been doing it for
years. He's big and bluff
with a booming voice, and
• usually has a black cigar
stuck in his mouth. He's al-

ways on the move. He's busy
and he's ,knowledgeable. So
is his wife, and his son, and
'his brother and his sister.
They're all in the business,

I stood in the middle of it

But the cactus plants are

of them three months just to
germinate and a century to
become sizeable plants.
