I've met a lot of super -
seniors lately. Some of them
are `retired' and are busier
than ever. Others don't be-
lieve in retirement.
Last week, for example, a
super -senior showed me how
to climb a mountain, and
another showed me how' to
shear a Sheep.
Dr. Karl Hackstetter is 70;
and he's going to Nepal next
month to climb three moun-
tains, all of them, 16,000 feet
or mo! He's in top-flight
physical condition and stays
that way by walking 7 miles
a day, swimming and skiing.
It's hard to classify him.
He has a PhD in English
Literature but has also been
a newspaper editor, a ma-
chinist and a teacher of
mathematics. For the past
few years .he's lived in the
Georgian Bay area but takes
periodic jaunts to places -like
Switzerland and Austria to
pursue his hobby of moun-
tain climbing.
The closest thing we could"
find to a mountain that was
near his home was a rather
steep cliff. The cliff looked
awesome to me. But Karl
tied a rope around his waist
and scampered to the top
like a gazelle. I was amazed!
He looked down at me,
straight, strong and lithe,
and laughed at the shocked
expression on my face. Then
he started to pull me up the
cliff. I went up about 30 feet
and then shouted to him to let
me down. I figured that was
crossroads

far enough to get the idea.
The next day I was in the
village of Maple, just north
of Toronto to meet 70 -year-
old Wilf Bowes. He clips
sheep for a living. He's been
shearing sheep for over half
a century, and estimates
that over the years he's
sheared close to a' million
sheep! '
He's his own boss. He
works from his home and,
travels to various sheep
farms within a 60 mile rad-
ius. Wilf is an expert. He's a
judge at shows and teaches
young farmers how shearing
should be done.
We went to a nearby farm
and I took a run with the clip-
pers over the heavy wool of a
big ram Wilf was shearing.
The ram sensed something.
He didn't like it'. He twisted
around, I lost my grip and
Wilf had to take over. It was
another learning experience.
I concluded that unless you
know exactly what you're
doing, shearing sheep can be
a wild and woolly job!
The interesting thing about
these twib knowledgeable,
experienced men is that they
both say they're getting
more out of life now than
they ever did before. And I
agree. I'm crowding 70 my-
self and these are the truly
great years! So if you're
worried about aging, forget
it. The best is yet to come.
You won't take life too ser-
iously and you will find time
to do lots of different things
... Like climbing mountains
or shearing sheep.
