Look for a few
good enemies
There are very few pests
more common than the
person who sets out sys-
tematically and methodi-
cally to "make friends...."
There are always a few
such souls in every service
club, fraternal organiza-
tion or church congrega-
tion.
You can always spot
"Mr., Mrs. or Miss Friend-
ly" who breaks into small
groups of congenial souls,
slapping all gathered on
the back and inquiring as
to the "howness" of every-
thing.
In all that they say and
do you can smell the musty
page of a list of rules they
are following and very few
persons are ever deceived.
Folks who try too desper-
ately for the goal of univer-
sal friendship never learn
that you cannot manufac-
ture friends. The idea of
manufacturing means ma-
nipulation and any sugges-
tion of a forced relation is
fatal to friendship.
There is no known way
to force a friendship. This
is something which has to
grow. You need to plant
the seeds of friendship and
cultivate friendship just as
patiently as anything else
that is worth growing.
'Often, the friend -maker
is a lonely, well-inten-
tioned person who sincere-
ly wants the esteem and
regard of his fellows. If

someone has enough con-
cern, take him aside and
whisper in • his • ear these
. humble words of wise and
worldly counsel: "If you
want to make friends, it
cannot be done. You have
to grow them."
The other side of this
coin is, if you want a few
close friends, ,go and. make
yourself some powerful en-
emies. Of course, I realize
that this may momentarily
shock your finer sensibili-
ties coming from a cleric.
It sounds paradoxical but it
is not, really. Listen!
The person who boasts of
no enemies is either totally
oblivious to the world, not
telling the truth or a piece
of seaweed. I cannot be-
lieve that such a person is,
very good company. So
hear me out as I say, "Go
;Hake yourself some real
good enemies." Select
them with deliberate and
sensitive care. Go after
them with earnestness.
Soon, the people who have
felt something authentic in
you and feel as you do will
start migrating toward you
on a somewhat deeper
level than the shallow kind
of relationships we most ,
often have.
The precedent for what I
am saying is seen in every
forceful character in
recorded history.
Did George Washington
have enemies? He was no
out there swinging hi
sword at his friends! Mean-
while, at his back were a
goodly number in the Con-
tinental Congress who
were long ready to throw
in the towel. Not only did "
they want to stop the war,
they were doing all they
could to sell George down
the river.
Remember Linin?
Half of this nation believed
to its dying day that he was
the most evil thing on two
legs.
Did Teddy Roosevelt
talk about carrying a "big
stick" for purely decora-
tive purposes?
1 This is where I am going
to get into trouble but it is
still truth. I believe. Jesus
Christ had as many ene-
mies as any other man in
Palestine and maybe a few
more. When he walked into
the midst of the money
changers desecrating the
temple, we do not find him
trying a chapter from the.•
book: "Tact and Compro-
mise." Holy Writ says he
took a horsewhip and drove
the greedy leeches out.
You might go to your li-
brary or borrow from your
minister a good Concor-
dance and look up in the
New Testament the refer-
ences to Jesus dealing with
his enemies. It is a very in- ,
teresting study and as you
read, remember he was
persecuted, cursed and
crucified by his enemies.
You may respond that
Jesus loved his enemies.
Yes, yes, yes, he loved
them. But he hated their
ideas, their compromised
morals and the way they
were exploiting the help-
less. He fought their ideas
and values relentlessly.
So the clue to getting a
friend As .first to, look at
your own values. Know
what you believe and
value. Then take a long,
hard look at the values of
your would-be friend.
Maybe he or she should be
your enemy. Then, if you
proceed, you are cultivat-
ing selected friendship on
the firm foundation of mu-
tual ideas, values and ide-
als of an authentic person.
It is best to have a few hon-
est, deep friends and a
great many acquaintances.
A few practical tips..In a
church, do not be an occa-
sional pew warmer. Get
into the spirit of things and
find out how people will
welcome you. The great
need of the church is the
active, ,intelligent and able
aid of its very fine layper-
sons..
If you belong to a service
club, great! But do not be
content just to wear a but-
ton. Attend and take a hand
in doing this work. They
need people like you. This
is the formula for friend-
ship. No magic and mys-
tery about it. No dash or
sparkling originality, but I
s know it will work.
