Betty Bendrika, president
of the- > ruce local of the
Ontario Nurses' Association,
said the representatives of
that local rejected an offer
made to them by. manage-
ment (Bruce County) at a
Meeting held last Monday at
Walkerton.
Miss Hendriks reported an
employee -relations officer
from the London district of
the. association will notify the
Ontario :PlittiStry of Labor
and apply-foraa mediator.
They should know by this
week when negotiations are
• to begin. •
-
Bruce County's 13 health
nurses do not want to strike,
said Miss Hendriks, but they
are the lowest -paid public
health nurses in the
province.
The county has offered a
wage increase of five per
cent right across the board.
'That would bring the
minimum salary for a
registered public health
nurse up to $19,184 per an-
num, with a ceilingaof $21,962
after seven years.
Public health nurses in
neighboring Grey County
now make a minimum of
$23,649 and a maximum of
$27,075 after seven years.
The Bruce County public
health nurses had asked for a
minimum of $20,396 and
ceiling of $23,174.
If accepted, the contract
would have lasted until
December of this year, but it
should have been settled by
December of 1983.
Miss. Hendriks said the
situation has become not just
one of money, but one . of
morale for the nurses. She
said she also is concerned
about the quality of nurses
who will be attracted to
Bruce County if wages do not
improve.
Although the county only
contributes 25 per cent of the
overall salary paid to health
nurses within its boundaries,
.--it is-the-main-negotiator.."h
province contributes the re-
maining 75 per Lent.
