S From the ' plaintive "Lament" to the rocking, pounding beat of "401" to the hilarious "Love's Triangle", the music is the engine that makes the play go. There, are some standout performances along the way. Daisy DeBolt as Sam, leader of the band Sam and the Slowpokes, is nothing short of electrifying, with a stage presence that is unbelievable and a voice to match. One of the newcomers to this year's production, DeBolt is an experienced actor -singer - musician who formed half of the well-known folk duo Fraser and DeBolt. Also unforgettable is Ron Gabriel as Boomer, a burnt- out case sporting the tag - ends of a classical education who is a somewhat un- welcome regular it the Commodore Hotel. Another newcomer, Gabriel has appeared in three of the five productions at Blyth this summer and has quickly carved himself a place in the REVIVE LEAVES Rejuvenate dried eucalyp- tus leaves in flower ar- rangements by steaming them in a shower or over a tea kettle, says Clothing and Textile Specialist Margaret Loewen of the rural organi- zations and services branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. 0-a•-0 Bulb -forming plants are among the most attractive of all garden flowers. They dominate the garden in spring when there are few other plants in bloom. Plant bulbs this fall before the first frost in an area where the later winter sun will be strong, says Tony Hoger- vorst, rural organizations contact, (Ontario Horticul- tural Association) of the On- tario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's rural organiza- tions and services branch. Work the ground, then place the bulb, root end down,'in a 10 centimetre (four inch) hole. Cover with soil and water with cold water. Some bulb -forming plants to try in - dude tulips, hyacinth, daffo- dils, crocuses, narcissus, mascari (Glory of the Snow) --anemone . and chionodoxa. Guest column By Henry Hess With Janet Amos and Ted Johns leaving Blyth this fall for Fredericton, where she has been appointed artistic director of the Theatre New Brunswick,, the production of "Country Hearts" which opened last week may be seen as their farewell to the Blyth Festival. if farewell it is, they certainly are going out with a flourish! It has been a long time since an audience has more obviously enjoyed itself than did the opening night crowd at Blyth last Tuesday, and the waves of applause which rolled through the theatre at the final curtain were richly deserved. As a team, Amos and her writer -actor husband have undoubtedly had more to do with the success of the Blyth Festival than any other two individuals in its 10 -year history. The 1984 season, which concludes Sept. 15, has been the best to date, with no obviously weak links among its five productions, and "Country Hearts" which • wraps it all up is a fitting climax. The play by Johns with music by John Roby is basically the same production which set box office records during its premiere season in 1982 by selling out every seat in the Blyth theatre. Some slight fine-tuning of the 1984 ver- sion, including some new songs and a number of ex- citing new faces in the cast, have if anything made it even stronger than before. The story line is simple: a country hotel on a stormy night, populated by a handful of regulars, a couple of travelers stranded by the snow and a new band hired in 'a desperate attempt to improve the "tone" of the establishment. As the night unfolds, we learn a little about their lives, relation- ships, hopes and values, but that is really a sideline to the main event. What makes "Country Hearts" spring to life and lam : eEaaP4 wit unexpected "twits;" that lend them a depth of interest which would be eatit:ely loo in simple slapstick. One is never quite sure what to expect of him next! With one of the largest casts of any Blyth produc- tion, `°Hearts" gives everyone a chance to shine, and they take good ad- vantage of it. Least visible onstage is John Roby him- self, who is clearly content to let his music speak for him - which it does, eloquently. The set is outstanding; lighting and direction are flawless. All in all, the illy is one of those all -too -rare produc- tions which could be enjoyed over and over. Un- sophisticated and without pretensions, it is typical of the style of play Johns does so well and which have become the backbone of the Blyth Festival. For sheer fun and entertainment, you won't do better than "Country Hearts". hon i "if Kell IMMA-mtErmr.
