GARDNER, RETIRED, UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA On more than voce occasion, during my ministry, I have found myself on a partyline of the local telephone company. In the midst of a conversation with someone I would sud- dently be interrupted by another party wanting. the line. Yet such in- terruptions cannot always be attributed to the same cause. I remember one in- stance where subscribers living in the same neigh- bourhood were having great difficulty because there were strange noises on the line. All were surprised to learn later on, on investigation, that the interruptions they were suffering, were caused by squirrels, who had chewed through the cables to get at the in- sulation, It might be a relief to have squirrels to blame for such, intrusions, but usually the local sub- scribers must bear their share of the blame for such interruptions. Perhaps one of the most famous in- terruptions in history was when Coleridge sat down to write "Kubla Khan". One night the author had slept about three hours. On ,awakening, he took pen, ink and paper and inister's study wrote, swiftly, the lines we have preserved for us. Unfortunately, at that time, he was called from his writing by a man on business. We are not told the man's name but he detained the author for an hour. On his return to the room, he found to his chagrin, that, with the Goderich obituaries J.S.L. (LAWRENCE) CUMMINGS J.S,.L. We may ask ourselves: What did this man want? Was it all that important? We can only guess what his business was; but, apparently, it occupied the author's tirne for an hour. Probably it was some small thing which he wished to discuss with him. We have all seen folk like that, who talk on and on about little or nothing. It makes no difference, whether one was writing a letter, or composing a piece of music, or a poem: something should be done about interruptions. It does no good to get angry, because interruptions will be with us as long as we live. Did I say, as long as we CAN YOU BET YOUR LIFE IT CAN. PLEASE GIVE. Secretary PI fining Board 1 live ---remember even death, itself is an in- terruption. It was so in Our Lord's day. You may recall His words in John 7:33: "Yet a little while, I am with you, and then I go-". The fellowship of Jesus and His Disciples was not ended by the Cross, It was only interrupted. How could His Disciples, human as they were, understand all this? They did riot at the time. It was only revealed to them later. On the First Easter Morn, Jesus met Mary in the garden and resumed the fellowship which had been interrupted by the Cross. Later, He met Peter and John and the others and talked with' them. No wonder John writes with a new cer- tainty and assurance regarding- this in- terruption we call death. He has Jesus saying, "Yet a little while and the world seeth Me no more, but ye see Me: And because I live, ye shall live also." (John -14:19) This is the source of our great confidence: That life is all one; even though, somewhere along the line, it is interrupted by death. Yet, that in- terruption, is a part of life itself. Thus we are assured: "Whatever is, here, faithfully begun, Will be completed, not undone."
