The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-09-27, Page 11Johnson wins Maitland championship Maitland Golf men held their Championship Day on, Saturday, September 21 and a field of 42 men turned out for 18 holes of play for net prizes. Flight matches had been played previously as a number of the finalists had to get back to bashing the books, at University and College. Paul Johnson downed all comers to win the Club Championship. Nice going, Paul! Paul was in charge of the pro shop all summer and has now returned to Western University. Winner of "B" .flight was Rick Rawson, while Hugh Hanly took "C" flight honours. Rawson was also the winner of the Papernic-k Trophy, defeating Bob Shrier in the finals to win this award. You see what I mean about our book learnin' finalists, Rick and Hugh are off to Conestoga College, and are •even rooming together. Won't that be • great - can't you just see them, chipping into the • sink and taking divots out of the carpet! However, we wish all our young members thebest of luck in their.studies. The team of George Gould and •Ken Hall took and M-arE wart to the cleaners •to win the Scotch two -ball The winner ofthe Kane Award for the most improved golfer, was Jtrhn Schneiker, who reduced his handicap from ,14 to 8, a good reduction of 46 percent.. The •Senior Cham- pionship was taken . by Fred Looker with a 79 gross. The. Senior Category is for men 55 years and over, and there were only 17 who ad-,, mitted to tha age! Bob McDougall was tops for the 'day's play and became the Men's Night Champion with a 60 net. Congratulations to all you winners and to the rest - well, there's always next year. The Junior Boys Championship will be played on September 30, and to date we do not have a final figure of how many will be par- ticipating. Gaff has just about wound down for the ,season, with all organized play over (now you can go out and play in a disorganized manner), but so long as we have these lovely fall days and the flags are still up, we should be out there soaking up all the sun- shine and fresh air we can. • Pete is lovingly getting the greens preparedfor the onslaught of winter, and here's hoping that Old Man River doesn't go on the rampage again this year. The Grounds' Crew has really worked hard all summer to get the course in the beautiful shape it is, after last spring's debacle. We want to remind you all to have your clubs removed from club storage section by Sep- tember 30. st GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1979—PAGE 11 The men's club championships at the Maitland Country Club went to the following on Saturday: back row, left to right, Ken Hall and George Gould, Scotch two -ball champions; John Schnelker, most improved golfer; Fred Looker, seniors club Bantams play. for WOAA title In WO AA- —aan-t-a m Playoffs the Goderich Bluewater Internationals beat out Exeter two games to one to win their. division title. loose aiidJ (Ailed 5 more in the seventh and two in the ninth with Exeter keeping right on their heels and scoring six more runs.
