Round 'n Abou
I doubt if many people
in our vicinity know very
much about the Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority, an
international
organization in. the
United States. Exeter,
Clinton and Wingham are
nearby towns which also
have lively and hard-
working members of -this•
organization.
In "Around the W?rld

Eindhover chapter was
formed in January this
year by a woman who has
been a member of
chapters all across
Canada. She tells that she
has enjoyed chapters in
Kitchener, Ontario,
Winnipeg, Manitoba and
Vancouver, B.C. Her
husband's work also
moved her to chapters in
Toronto and Oshawa. She
started new chapters in
Port Perry and Uxbridge
as well, while in Ontario,
before they were given
the opportunity to spend a
few years in Holland.
Language barriers crop
up sometimes but that
does not stop this group.
Another chapter was
formed in Keflavik,
Iceland, a N.A.T.O. base
in a very cold, often
desolate country. The
"Rock" as they call their
peninsula, is very windy
and cold most of the year.
The winter is only four
hours of daylight - often
overcast and so grey they
feel they have missed the
day altogether. But when
summer comes, they are
happy to have a 24-hour
day again. Daylight or
dark, the meetings go on
and brighten their lives
while there.

A small group started a
chapter in Cuba at
Guantanamo Bay. There
they enjoy an 85 degree
year-round temperature
and a slower way of life.
But already they have
accomplished a great
deal — and are happy
with the strong and
spirited group of Sorority -
sisters.
Besides groups in every
country in the world, the
organization takes notice
off the prominent and
outstanding ladies of

each area and I had
noticed two more
International members:
one, Sarah Ophelia
Cannon - better known as
the eountry comedienne
with the battered straw
hat that still has a modest
price tag fluttering from
it - our Minnie Pearl, and
two, our Pauline

Governor of Ontario. The
Sarnia City Council had
proposed Mrs. McGib-
bon, the first woman to
hold a vice -regal post in
Canada. She i well-
known throughout .. the
country for her con-
tributions in the fields of
education and the arts,
presently on the Sarnia
Arts Foundation. She -is
also on the Board of the
Canadian Association of
the Mentally Retarded.
She is warmly welcomed
to this great organization.
Muriel Humphrey, wife
of the late Senator Hubert
Humphrey, is also a

Another distinction that
is noted is an outstanding

Machinery Show, Sep-
tember 25 to 29, features
more than 600 exhibits on
a 52 -hectare (130) acre)
site near Chatham,
making it the largest
outdoor "farni 3°h•achifiery" "'
show in North America.
Under the huge tents of
"Tented City", visitors
can see the latest farm
equipment and.
agricultural supplies. It's
a good opportunity to
survey the products
available, before you
decide to buy. But you
don't have to be a farmer
to enjoy • the farm
machinery show. There
are plenty of exhibits of
interest to everyone,
including 1980
automobiles and
recreational vehicles,
building . supplies, and
home appliances.

attention or ` ANY at-
tention?
I think each community
should look around at
past and present
"workers"people who
have truly tried to better
their lives and help those
around them by better
living, better culture and
better surroundings.
Stop and think about it.
There are a great many
who have done - and tried
to do - great things for
their community who
have faded into their own'
little vtorlds without even
a "thank you". I can
think of several around -
how about YOU?
Today I heard of a
homing pigeon who
can't find his or her way
home. Laurie • Ti,gert
(phone 4-2980) has a
banded bird who is lost If
you are missing one or
more wh not call
Laurie; it might be yours.
Then the thought came
up - how does one get in
contact with people who
have registered birds? Is
there a central point
where registrations are
listed? I, for one, would
like to know where to
contact someone who
knows about these things.
Would someone write me
- in care of the Signal -Star
about this and other
registrations. I'm sure
many would be in-
terested
