BY DAVE SYKES
It was inevitable.
As sure as the Labor
Day weekend signals a
return to school and the'
approach of fall it also
brings on the meeting of
Petrolia Hard Oil and
London Ted Dilts in the
championship of the
Goderich Industrial
Fastball Tournament.
And this year was no
exception.
It has almost become a
rite that these teams
would battle for the
rd
tourney championship
and it has become a rite
that Petrolia would once
again win the A final.
For the fourth year in
year in succession,
Petrolia nailed down the

Wingham whips Walton in B final
In similar fashion to the
Goderich Industrial
Fastball Tournament A
final, the B championship
was a carbon copy of last
• year,
'But Wingham made
certain the script was
changed this year.
Last year Wingham
was stymied by Walton
pitcher Rick MacDonald
as he held Wingham to
one hit and then slammed
a homer in the last inning
to carry Walton to a 1-0
win in the B final.
Wingham made sure
that didn't happen again.
They jumped on Walton
for rive runs .on four hits
in the first inning en ro9at
to a 6-1 win in the B
championship.
Wingham' scored the
five runs in the first in-
ning ' on the strength of
two homers and held a 5-0
lead before the first out
was recorded. Len
Sangster belted a three -
run• shot and Grant
Coultes followed with a
solohomer in the, first
inning outburst.
Wingham scored their
sixth run in the second
inning with Bill Brown
scoring his second run of
the game to provide a
comfortable margin for
winning pitcher, Don
Edgar.
Walton shut Wingham
out over the final five
innings but managed . to
score only one run in the
fifth inning. 'Doug Con-
nelly reached base on a
fielder's choice and
scored on Ken Ritchie's
hit.
Connelly started the
game for Walton but gave
way to MacDonald early
in the first inning.
Wingham defeated
South Zorra in their
opening round game and
dumped Ingersoll 5-0 in
the quarter final. '
. Doug Petteplace tossed
a neat two -hitter against
Ingersoll allowing just
two singles. He had a no
hitter going until Gene
Way chopped a single in
the sixth inning.
Doug Leitch led the
BPs with two hits in three
at bats and he also scored
two runs.
In the .semi-final,
Wingham scored two
runs in the fifth inning to
overcome a one -run
deficit and shade Canada
Company 2-1.
Wingham had only four
hits in the game but
combined two hits with
two Comapny errors in
the fifth to score the runs.
Canada Company laced
two Wingham pitchers
for seven but managed
only one run in the third
inning by Glen Tigert.
Walton had their
toughest. match in the •
first round as theyneeded
eight innings -to dispose of
West Corners 2-0.

three Goderich errors.
Roger Humphries hit a
solo homer for Walton
while John Hoy nailed
• two homers for McGees.
• Walton had no trouble
in their semi-final match
as they piled up a three -

and coasted to a 6-1 win
over Ingersoll,
Humphries again
sparked the Walton of-
fence with two hits and
MacDonald went the
distance in the win.

Petrolia has won the A
championship in the
goderich Industrial
Fastball Tourney four
successive years and
eachyear a new team
leader surfaces.
Petrolia players have
been selected as the
tournament most
valuable player for three
straight years. The only
reason it has not been for
years straight was the
outstanding performance
of Bill Gall,ow in the 1976
tourney.
But the Hard Oil team
always produces a top
calibre player in •the
tournament and this year
was no exception.
In 1977 Alex
MacEachern was
selected as mvp. The
third baseman belted
home runs and made
game saving defensive
plays at the hot corner.
